Stephen Crane and the Green Place of Paint
This paper addresses the influence of French Impressionist painting on the late nineteenth-century writer Stephen Crane (1871-1900), a key figure in the movement of literary naturalism and the author of, among other stories, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, The Red Badge of Courage, The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky, and The Blue Hotel. A journalist and war-time correspondent as well as a literary figure, Crane produced a remarkable number of poems, prose pieces, short stories, and “sketches” in a period of time spanning little more than a decade. Much of his work is characterized by formal devices analogous to Impressionist painting’s seemingly antithetical devices of atmospheric (or animated) paint and flat paint. These formal devices put into question normative, anthropocentric distinctions between human and nonhuman subjects and objects. The short story “An Experiment in Misery” (1889) describes in impressionist painterly language the city’s human and nonhuman subjectobjects that implies that ecogenic (nonhuman-made) human and nonhuman subject-objects are outcast, defaced, or bullied by the anthropogenic (humanmade) environs of the modern industrial city. The influence of French Impressionist painting on Crane has been addressed by scholars. However, these scholars do not comment on its ecocritical significances. I argue that Crane’s animation of the nonhuman figure and the oft-commented on flattening or caricaturing of the human figure by Crane express a nascent ecological argument.補正完畢TW

Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table
Any online chemistry textbook that contains a photograph of Max Planck and Albert Einstein on its first page definitely sets the right tone, and Stephen Lowerâs textbook certainly falls into that category. Over the past several years Lower has been working on this textbook, and for students looking for a bit of refresher on the world of atom structure and the periodic table, this is the right place in which to spend a bit of time. Through the use of short and concise chapters, the textbook provides six different lesson titles which cover the world of quantum physics, the Bohr atom, and the periodic properties of the elements. Within each chapter, users will also find illustrations and a âWhat you need to knowâ section that effectively summarizes the key principles and concepts in each section. [KMG
A roadmap for fiscal sustainability
The conduct of fiscal policy as part of overall macroeconomic management is essential to underpinning growth and stability in the Australian economy. The sustainability of fiscal settings and the efficiency of individual budget measures help to support consumer and investor confidence, to ensure governments do their job cost-effectively and, ultimately, to assist rising living standards.A central theme of this Monograph is that effective fiscal rules can guide budget behaviours around a sustainable benchmark, provided that benchmark is properly specified and clearly identified. The combination of transparency and high-quality information can assist political acceptance of the need for budget discipline, without removing necessary fiscal flexibility. The experience of Australian economic reform over the last three decades supports this insight. Australia had seen its relative economic performance decline by the 1980s and arresting this trend required an effective mix of microeconomic and macroeconomic reforms pursued by successive Australian Governments, at least up to 2000. On the fiscal policy front, this meant tackling the accumulation of historically-high levels of Commonwealth (and state and territory) net debt.Policy reformers argued that improving the long-term credibility of policy settings would underpin strong and stable economic growth. The idea was that fiscal policy was felt most strongly through stabilising debt and national savings, via related confidence effects attached to the risk premia on interest rates and allocative efficiency improvements. In 1998, the Howard Government enacted the Charter of Budget Honesty reforms which required the explicit outlining of a “medium-term” fiscal strategy. The practicalities of this involved a fiscal strategy statement being included from the 1997-98 Budget onwards, nominating a target objective for the strategy._______________ Stephen Anthony is the Director of Budget Policy and Forecasting at Macroeconomics, an economic modelling firm based in Canberra. He has worked as a senior policy officer and manager at the Federal Treasury and the Department of Finance. This paper has been sponsored by the Minerals Council of Australia, but the views expressed are those of Mr Anthony.

Historical experiences, collective memory and willingness to fight for one’s country: Comments on Paez et al. (2008)
This paper considers Paez et al.’s (2008) article ‘“Remembering” World War II and willingness to fight: Sociocultural factors in the social representation of historical warfare across 22 societies.’ Despite the importance of their focus on social representations of history and willingness to fight for one’s country, it is argued that Paez et al.’s paper features a number of methodological flaws. Specifically, the way in which key variables (historical experience, collective memory and willingness to fight for one’s country) are operationalized is especially problematic. The implications of these weaknesses for their conceptual conclusions are discussed briefly, as are the more general limitations of statistical analyses of survey data for addressing these issues
What we are left with: psychoanalytic endings
Book synopsis: Psychosocial Imaginaries collects together essays by members of the Department of Psychosocial Studies at Birkbeck, University of London, one of the key sites for the development of psychosocial studies in the UK. Psychosocial studies is a new and exciting area of work that challenges the traditions of psychology and sociology from a genuinely transdisciplinary perspective. This book reflects this agenda in its very varied theoretical and empirical strands, producing a newly contextualised and restless body of understanding of how 'psychic' and 'social' processes intertwine
Stephen Yaffee Interview, February 23, 1998
Stephen Yaffee discusses internal discussions in the U.S. Forest Service at the time of ecosystem management’s implementation. He explains the “scientific base” for the decision and how that scientific knowledge was managed. He alludes to the difficulties of moving policy through the hierarchy of the Forest Service, shifting in this way into some history of the agency. He mentions key legislation including NEMA, NFMA (National Forest Management Act of 1976), and FORPLAN (FORest PLANning).https://scholarworks.umt.edu/forestserviceecosystemmanagement/1004/thumbnail.jp
