It is with great pleasure that we announce the presentation of the first exhibition | visual symphony ‘Mountains Up-Side Down’ of the international artist-led project Settlements, organised and curated by a group of artists from Cyprus and abroad, consisting of: Vicky Pericleous (CY), Burchhard Garlichs, (DE), Demetris Neokleous (CY), Kyriakos Kallis (CY), Michael Nicolaides (DE), Nika Span (DE/SI) Panikos Tempriotis (CY), Stephanos Karambambas (GR).
This artist-led research project focuses on the development and curation of art contexts, situations and exhibitions that engage with multiple mediums, technologies and modalities, in order to re-negotiate spatiotemporal disputes around a variant of biopolitical landscapes, and in respect to their currency today.
This first exhibition Mountains Up-Side Down, is proposed as an open-ended site specific installation in the spaces of Aeriko and Rodous’s Watermill in the village of Galata, which stresses physically and perceptually, across Klarios or Karkotis river and meets contextually the communities of the wider region and lands of Troodos area.
These places are re-approached as spaces of alternative expressions and transformative contemplations on hetero-temporalities and on patterns of life, death and re-birth in respect to the biopolitical landscape(s) of the wider region and of the Troodos’ communities and territories; looking into how this landscape grows, rhizomatically1 elsewhere and how it interacts with the Other.
The installation of the art works in these territories, both indicates and seeks the rising of an –another- community. However temporal within the context of a visual exhibition, it embeds at the same time, witnesses of the biopolitical layers, narratives and spatiotemporal remains of the valley of Solea and Troodos area. The exhibition and the wider project moves from a local to a trans-local development and understanding. It wishes to develop nets and patterns of alternative economies of life and production within todays’ worlds that are able to re-imagine new risings and other spaces of care and ways of engaging (with) and inclusion of various communities and places.Cultural Services of the Ministry of Deputy-Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cypru
Cholangiocarcinoma cell lines: proteomic analysis and enhancing response to chemotherapy.
MD (Res)Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a rare cancer with a poor prognosis. Much of medical
research has focused on investigating cancers with a higher incidence and little focus
has been devoted to this disease.
The aim of this thesis was to perform a protein analysis of CCA and cholangiocyte cell
lines. Differences between immortalised cancer and normal cells were sought in
order to identify potential therapeutic targets and/or diagnostic tools.
A variety of CCA cell lines were used, reflecting both intra and extrahepatic disease.
The different subtypes of CCA through the developed and developing world are also
represented so differences were also sought between them. Proteomic analysis was
performed using DIGE with subsequent spot selection. Identified spots were
extracted and processed using mass spectrometry.
In addition, available chemotherapy agents were tested in vitro against the same cell
lines to check for their action and how this could be enhanced. A benzodiazepine
receptor antagonist (PK11195) was used to demonstrate apoptosis promotion in the
presence of established cytotoxic agents (gemcitabine, etoposide, 5 fluorouracil and
cisplatin). Cytotoxic assays were carried out using the SRB (Sulphorhodamine B)
assay. Cell lines were tested for benzodiazepine receptor status using qRTPCR and
response was correlatedLondon Bridge Hospital (HCA

Migrated fish bone induced liver abscess: medical management
Liver abscess secondary to a migrated ingested foreign body is an uncommon condition where early diagnosis helps management and improves prognosis. Abscess drainage with removal of the foreign body is the recommended management. We report the successful management of a patient with a liver abscess from a migrated fishbone that was treated medically with the foreign body left in situ

FRONTPAGE PROJECT - Exhibition, Symposium, Workshop
CURATORIAL TEXT FOR FRONTPAGE, November 20 – 29, 2024, Limassol Municipal University Library:
‘The 2nd sequential exhibition of FRONTPAGE project is presented at the Limassol Municipal University Library, and wishes to bring in both physical and conceptual proximity, ongoing investigations and negotiations of the cultural relationship of word and image. Through curatorial gestures and relational configurations that involve and develop contemporary interdisciplinary and intermedial formations -between and across multiple fields of knowledge-, the exhibition unfolds within the spaces of the Municipal University Library, taking the form of an expanded art installation.
This installation is conceived under the curatorial intention to examine and negotiate cultural dialectics of what we consider as news, coming from the field of journalism and the event of the news, itself. The event itself, could, therefore, be re-interpreted and potentially re-invented in the Arts. The exhibition is developed as a conceptual and visual choreography throughout the library, where the visitor finds themselves in a new condition of study’.
Vicky Pericleous, Assistant Professor, Department of Fine Arts (CUT).
Presentation/Concept Development of the FRONTPAGE PROJECT
‘The purpose of this project is to achieve an artistic and dynamic outcome through the interaction and collaboration of creators from both the visual arts and the broader fields of journalism and communication. Participants are inspired by front-page newspaper articles they choose and by prominent news from the media, both international and Greek print and digital press. These ‘front pages’ serve as a canvas for creation, commentary, expression, and positioning. The themes developed by the creators have a referential and conceptual approach regarding the transmission of the message, the concept of news, writing, text, and the power of words and images.
More specifically, the exhibition develops along five main axes: Timeliness - Communication - Image - Word - Memory and will include visual works from already recognized and upcoming visual artists, photographers, photo reporters, and video artists.
The FRONTPAGE has already been presented at the Melina Mercouri Cultural Center in Athens in 2023, and a new presentation is scheduled in Vienna that involves the participation of creators and communicators from Central Europe’.

Open and Minimal Approaches to Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma
Surgical options and approaches to pancreatic cancer are changing in the current era. Neoadjuvant treatment strategies for pancreatic cancer combined with the increased use of minimal access surgical techniques mean that the modern pancreatic surgeon requires mastering a number of surgical approaches with to optimally manage patients. Whilst traditional open surgery remains the most frequent approach for surgery, the specific steps during surgery may need to be modified in light of the aforementioned neoadjuvant treatments. Robotic and laparoscopic approaches to pancreatic resection are feasible, but these surgical methods remain in their infancy. In this review article, we summarise the current surgical approaches to pancreatic cancer and how these are adapted to the minimal access setting with discussion of the patient outcome data
