The morphology of –ly and the categorial status of ‘adverbs’ in English.

No full text
The author challenges the traditional assumption of derivational morphology which accords adverbial –ly derivational status and gives adverbs lexical category status on a par with nouns, verbs and adjectives. The author argues that adverbial –ly, unlike its adjectival counterpart, is inflectional and adverbs ending in –ly are rather to be regarded as inflected adjectives while those adverbs not containing –ly are uninflected adjectives; “adverbs cannot be categorially distinct from adjectives” (p. 342-343)

Shear Strength Measurements in LY-12 Aluminium Alloy During Shock Loading

No full text
Lateral stress of LY-12 alummium alloy under plate impact shock loading was measured. Based on the measured data, the Hugoniot relation and shear strength were obtained. The result has demonstrated that the shear strenath of the tested material increases remarkably with the increasing longitudinal stress. This means that the assumption of constant shear strength usually adopted in shock stress calculation is not suitable for the present material

Community-based tourism (CBT) is no longer a new form in many countries, including Vietnam. However, the approach of CBT in a sustainable manner, especially in coastal villages, where tourism has recently emerged as an alternative livelihood, has received little attention. This study explores the impact of tourism on the lives of the local community, the level of people’s participation in tourism, and the challenges of tourism development in the coastal commune of Nhon Ly, Binh Dinh province. By utilizing a qualitative method such as observation and semi-structured interviews with 19 villagers engaged in tourism, the results show that tourism contributes significantly to the lives of the residents in Nhon Ly (e.g., improving income, changing livelihoods from fishing to tourism, improving environmental awareness). However, tourism development has obstacles related to local people’s skills and knowledge working in tourism and their limited participation in tourism policy and planning. Other issues were related to the negative impacts of tourism on cultural-social and environmental aspects in Nhon Ly. Therefore, there is a need for comprehensive coordination among all tourism stakeholders, building long-term strategies to overcome barriers toward sustainable CBT development in the future.</div

Hydrogen Ly α and Ly β Radiances and Profiles in Polar Coronal Holes

No full text
The hydrogen Lya plays a dominant role in the radiative energy transport in the lower transition region, and is important for the studies of transition-region structure as well as solar wind origin. We investigate the Ly alpha profiles obtained by the Solar Ultraviolet Measurement of Emitted Radiation spectrograph on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory spacecraft in coronal holes and the quiet Sun. In a subset of these observations, the H I Ly beta, Si III, and O VI lines were also (quasi-)simultaneously recorded. We find that the distances between the two peaks of Ly alpha profiles are larger in coronal holes than in the quiet Sun, indicating a larger opacity in coronal holes. This difference might result from the different magnetic structures or the different radiation fields in the two regions. Most of the Ly beta profiles in the coronal hole have a stronger blue peak, in contrast to those in quiet-Sun regions while in both regions the Ly alpha profiles are stronger in the blue peak. Although the asymmetries are likely to be produced by differential flows in the solar atmosphere, their detailed formation processes are still unclear. The radiance ratio between Ly alpha and Ly beta decreases toward the limb in the coronal hole, which might be due to the different opacity of the two lines. We also find that the radiance distributions of the four lines are set by a combined effect of limb brightening and the different emission level between coronal holes and the quiet Sun.Astronomy & AstrophysicsSCI(E)7ARTICLE2L152-L15670

STUDY ON THE TROPICAL-STORM-GENERATED WAVE FIELD ON THE SEA AREA AROUND LY SON ISLAND

No full text
Ly Son is a frontline island of our country that is often affected by adverse weather conditions such as monsoons or tropical storms. Studying the hydraulic parameters of tropical storms, including the storm's wave field, to determine extreme conditions plays an important role in forecasting, planning and construction of hydraulic works. The author uses the two-dimensional wave propagation model MIKE 21 SW to simulate the wave field of Molave storm 2020 in Ly Son sea. The results show a good agreement between the values obtained from the model and the actual measurements at Ly Son station. Based on the results obtained, the author proposes a method to simulate storm wave fields that is relatively accurate and effective. In particular, current standards based on wind speed and wind fetch still have many limitations. This is valuable in the actual design and planning of hydraulic works

5-HT2B-receptor antagonist LY-272015 is antihypertensive in DOCA-salt-hypertensive rats

No full text
We previously demonstrated a change in the receptors mediating 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)-induced contraction in arteries of deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt-hypertensive rats. Specifically, contraction to 5-HT is mediated primarily by 5-HT2A receptors in arteries from normotensive sham rats and by both 5-HT2A and 5-HT2B receptors in arteries from hypertensive rats. We hypothesized that the 5-HT2B receptor may play a role in maintaining the high blood pressure of DOCA-salt-hypertensive rats, and herein we provide data connecting in vitro and in vivo findings. The endothelium-denuded isolated superior mesenteric artery of DOCA-salt rats displayed a marked increase in maximum contraction to the newly available 5-HT2B-receptor agonist BW-723C86 compared with that of arteries from sham rats, confirming that the 5-HT2B receptor plays a greater role in 5-HT-induced contraction in arteries from DOCA-salt rats. In chronically instrumented rats, the 5-HT2B-receptor antagonist LY-272015 (0.3, 1.0, and 3.0 mg/kg iv at 30-min intervals) was given cumulatively 1 time/wk during 4 wk of continued DOCA-salt treatment. LY-272015 did not reduce blood pressure of the sham-treated rats at any time or dose. However, LY-272015 (1.0 and 3.0 mg/kg) significantly reduced mean blood pressure in a subgroup of week 3 (−20 mmHg) and week 4 DOCA-salt (−40 mmHg) rats that had extremely high blood pressure (mean arterial blood pressure ∼200 mmHg). Blockade of 5-HT2Breceptors by in vivo administration of LY-272015 (3.0 mg/kg) was verified by observing reduced 5-HT-induced contraction in rat stomach fundus, the tissue from which the 5-HT2B receptor was originally cloned. These data support the novel hypothesis that 5-HT2B-receptor expression is induced during the development of DOCA-salt hypertension and contributes to the maintenance of severe blood pressure elevations. </jats:p

THE INFLUENCES OF “THREE-RELIGION” ON THE SOCIO-POLITICAL LIFE UNDER THE LY - TRAN DYNASTIES

No full text
The Ly - Tran dynasties were the ones reaching the most brilliant development of Vietnamese feudal history. In many fields and aspects, the Ly - Tran dynasties had proud achievements, which made a great contribution to the spirit of "Three-religion". As a form of social consciousness, "Three-religion" with the presence of three coexisting religions including Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism had a stake in changing the face of contemporary socio-political life. Therefore, in this article, the author focuses on analyzing the influences of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism on the socio-political life under the Ly - Tran dynasties to clarify the position and role of each religio

Blind QSO reconstruction challenge: Exploring methods to reconstruct the Lyαα emission line of QSOs

No full text
Reconstructing the intrinsic Lyαα line flux from high-zz QSOs can place constraints on the neutral hydrogen content of the intergalactic medium during reionisation. There are now 10\gtrsim10 different Lyαα reconstruction pipelines using different methodologies to predict the Lyαα line flux from correlations with the spectral information redward of Lyαα. However, there have been few attempts to directly compare the performance of these pipelines. Therefore, we devised a blind QSO challenge to compare these reconstruction pipelines on a uniform set of objects. Each author was provided de-identified, observed rest-frame QSO spectra with spectral information only redward of 1260Å rest-frame to ensure unbiased reconstruction. We constructed two samples of 30 QSOs, from X-Shooter and SDSS both spanning $3.

The emerging legal framework for private sector development in Viet Nam's transitional economy

No full text
A major objective of Viet Nam's transition to a market economy has been to reactivate the private sector in a mixed economy. Several new laws have been introduced in the past five years to implement this policy and to create an enabling environment for the private sector. The author reviews some of the more important laws and regulations that affect Viet Nam's private sector activities, including laws on real property, intellectual property, companies, domestic investment, foreign investment, bankruptcy, contracts, and dispute resolution. Anti-monopoly law has not yet been introduced in Viet Nam. The issue of competition is addressed in the context of trade law, the relative roles of the state and private sector, and restrictions in company law. These areas all establish the foundation of a legal framework for a market economy. The author concludes that Viet Nam's legal framework, like China's, is still influenced by ideology, which causes problems in such areas as private ownership of real property and with such fundamental legal concepts as"due process of law."It is noted that the private sector is constrained by the lack of an independent judiciary, the absence of private land ownership, other uncertainties in property law that limit the develpoment of financial markets, and the inherent bias of the system in favor of the state sector (and collective ownership). Also noted is a law-abiding attitude, equally important to development has been slow to develop. The author goes on to point out that the foreign investment process is too complicated, and its company law too restrictive. A first priority should be to strreamline regulations, as well as liberalize trade policy and increase efforts in privatization of state enterprises. In this respect the author notes that export processing zones may be a useful interim instrument to attract foreign investment but should be phased out over time. More important in the long term is a good investment climate resting on a strong legal foundation.Legal Products,Environmental Economics&Policies,Banks&Banking Reform,Municipal Housing and Land,Municipal Financial Management,Environmental Economics&Policies,Banks&Banking Reform,Municipal Housing and Land,Legal Products,Municipal Financial Management
