Memories. On the westward journey of Chinese migrants from Zhejiang to Europe in the 1920s
This is the main essay in a book that resulted from a collaboration with the artists Ciaj Rocchi and Matteo Demonte, with whom the author has participated to a call for projects promoted by the University of Padua and the Royal Holloway University of London. Our project, entitled "Pearls from China", won a grant to carry out research on the early years of the Chinese migration from Zhejiang to Europe, which was started by itinerant peddlers of fake pearls who travelled to Germany, France, Spain and Italy in 1925-1926. Many of them had actually migrated from China to Japan a few years earlier, as we were able to show thanks to records found in Japanese, Chinese and European archives, as well as documentation and oral testimonies gathered among the descendants of the earliest Chinese migrants to Italy. The book is thus an innovative mixture between an academic essay, written by the author and a graphic essay, illustrated by the splendid artwork of Rocchi and Demonte. The early mobilities of Zhejiang migrants across Eurasia have been documented graphically by sourcing contemporary maps and illustrations, which have been the prime source materials for the volume's artwork
Hungarian loanwords in the Slovak language, II (L-R)
The influence exerted by Hungarian on neighbouring languages has already been the subject of ample and thorough studies. Hungarian lonanwords in the Slovak language was studied from various scholars, but their works are limited to a ristrict number of either geographical areas or lexical fields. Slovakian nevertheless, has got an important superstratum of Hungarian origin, especially in some dialectal areas. The intention of the author is to make a systematic presentation of all this lexicographic material. The Slovakian lexicon presented in this work endeavours to cover in extent all language register (from literary to regional or dialectal).L'influenza della lingua ungherese nelle lingue dei territori limitrofi è stata oggetto di molti studi.

The codex Ashb. 1547 of the Biblioteca Mediceo-Laurenziana of Florence contains a substantial lexical and phraseological Italian-Arabic glossary, with two additional short chapters regarding Greek and Turkish. The manuscript, unpublished so far, probably dates from the 16th century and is anonymous; from the internal data, we can infer that its author was a merchant of Venetian origin, who lived in Egypt for a while. It has to be pointed out that the texts in the various lan-guages are all written only in the Latin script. This paper deals with the Italian-Turkish part of the codex, which comprises words and phrases concerning greetings and buying and selling, as well as a series of numerals. The Turkish lexical corpus is first presented in alphabetical order, if necessary comparing single entries to those of other Transkriptionstexte or of literary Ottoman, then is extensively examined in its graphematic, phonetic and morphological features
Disparities in Cancer Incidence in Armenia, 2013-2016: Setting Priorities for Preventive Interventions.
Abstract: Many studies indicate increasing cancer burden in developing world with prominent sex and urban-rural disparities in the populations. However, internationally comparable research data about cancer incidence in Armenia is lacking. This study aimed to provide information about trends and inequalities in cancer incidence in Armenian population. A cross-sectional study was conducted to analyze data from all hospital-based cancer registries of Armavir province, western Armenia, from January 2013 to December 2016. For the 4-year study period, cancer crude and age-standardized incidence rates, as well as Incidence Rate Ratios were estimated by age-groups, sex, and urban-rural areas. A total of 1,894 cancer cases were recorded during the study period. Lung cancer was the most frequent in men and breast cancer was the most prevalent in women. ASIRs per 100,000 person-years of all cancers combined in men were significantly higher than in women (IRR=1.36, 95% CI: 1.24, 1.49; p<0.001) and were fluctuated over time, while in women they were fairly stable. Disparities in cancer incidence by urban and rural residence were also statistically significant considering overall outcome (IRR=1.57, 95% CI: 1.43, 1.72; p<0.001), as well as after adjustment by sex and age. Significantly higher rates for urban young women was particularly evident. The patterns observed here suggest priorities to reduce inequalities and prevent new cancer cases in revealed vulnerable groups. These findings about disparities in cancer incidence can be used by health planners for the development of targeted prevention programs for more efficient use of restricted resources in this developing country.

Early effects comparison of X rays delivered at high-dose-rate pulses by a plasma focus device and at low dose rate on human tumour cells
A comparative study has been performed on the effects of high-dose-rate (DR) X-ray beams produced by a plasma focus device (PFMA-3), to exploit its potential medical applications (e.g. radiotherapy), and low-DR X-ray beams produced by a conventional source (XRT). Experiments have been performed at 0.5 and 2 Gy doses on a human glioblastoma cell line (T98G). Cell proliferation rate and potassium outward currents (IK) have been investigated by time lapse imaging and patch clamp recordings. The results showed that PFMA-3 irradiation has a greater capability to reduce the proliferation rate activity with respect to XRT, while it does not affect IK of T98G cells at any of the dose levels tested. XRT irradiation significantly reduces the mean IK amplitude of T98G cells only at 0.5 Gy. This work confirms that the DR, and therefore the source of radiation, is crucial for the planning and optimisation of radiotherapy applications. © The Author 2015
Adaptive Video Documentaries
Although some interesting architectures are emerging to define and formalize the notion of Adaptive Hypermedia, the research in this field is primarily focused on presentations based on static contents, mainly text and images. We propose an initial step toward the adaptative composition of video documentaries, that is video presentations based on still 2D images. Video clips are built by applying cinematic techniques - camera movements and transition effects - to images. The novelty of our approach stems from the application of adaptive hypermedia techniques to the dynamic composition of video documentaries exploiting the basic notions of cinematography, paying particular attention to the choice and the duration of transitions between shots. In this work we introduce XASCRIPT, a flexible mark-up formalism that allows a hypotetical author to define a set of possible video documentaries, from which user-tailored documentaries can be dynamically assembled. The author, via a graphical interface (under development), can describe templates that represent a set of 'potential' video documentaries, with instructions for the selection and the editing of the elements of the video clips. The templates include 'adaptation rules' as multiple-choice points, along which the presentation is tailored to a specific user. The application supports both content adaptation and dynamic selection of transition effects between video shot
Cerebellar Theta-Burst Stimulation Impairs Memory Consolidation in Eyeblink Classical Conditioning
Associative learning of sensorimotor contingences, as it occurs in eyeblink classical conditioning (EBCC), is known to involve the cerebellum, but its mechanism remains controversial. EBCC involves a sequence of learning processes which are thought to occur in the cerebellar cortex and deep cerebellar nuclei. Recently, the extinction phase of EBCC has been shown to be modulated after one week by cerebellar continuous theta-burst stimulation (cTBS). Here, we asked whether cerebellar cTBS could affect retention and reacquisition of conditioned responses (CRs) tested immediately after conditioning. We also investigated a possible lateralized cerebellar control of EBCC by applying cTBS on both the right and left cerebellar hemispheres. Both right and left cerebellar cTBSs induced a statistically significant impairment in retention and new acquisition of conditioned responses (CRs), the disruption effect being marginally more effective when the left cerebellar hemisphere was stimulated. These data support a model in which cTBS impairs retention and reacquisition of CR in the cerebellum, possibly by interfering with the transfer of memory to the deep cerebellar nuclei
Resurfacing capitate pyrocarbon implant as salvage procedure in several serious outcomes of carpal injuries. Clinical experience and follow-up
Background and aim: Resurfacing Capitate Pyrocarbon Implant has been introduced in the surgical practice as an alternative method to restore wrist motion, strength and functions in patients suffering from wrist osteoarthritis. It has already been well described in the literature as a treatment for advanced stages of degenerative wrist diseases which follow scaphoid’s and lunate’s injuries such as scapho-lunate advanced collapse, scaphoid non-union advanced collapse, and advanced stages of Kienböck disease. Authors extended the use of RCPI to other selected cases of complicated wrist injuries, spreading out from the classic indications for which this device was designed. Methods: We discuss 8 cases with serious outcomes of carpal injuries treated with Resurfacing Capitate Pyrocarbon Implant as salvage procedure between 2005 and 2013 by the first author of this paper. Results: Among the eight particular selected cases, at a mean 4.3 years follow-up (range 2-11) only one was considered a failure and underwent a total wrist arthrodesis, resolving pain after all. The seven other cases reported good results. Range of Motion, Visual Analogue Scale for pain, subjective satisfaction and radiographical outcomes are reported. Conclusions: As a result of this heterogeneous clinical experience, validated by long-term follow-ups in most cases, we think that the use of a Resurfacing Capitate Pyrocarbon Implant can be suggested as an option in the outcomes of various carpal injuries
Assessing River Embankment Stability Under Transient Seepage Conditions
AbstractThe evaluation of riverbank stability is a fundamental problem in flood risk management, representing a critical task for engineering practice. Soil heterogeneity together with initial and boundary conditions are among the crucial issues that should be considered to obtain an accurate solution of the problem. Generally, attention and efforts are mostly devoted to the soil characterization, the hydrometric level forecasts and the estimation of the rainfall intensity, while in situ measurements usually receive less attention. Nevertheless, suction and soil water content have a strong influence on the reliability of seepage and stability analyses. A preliminary study aiming at the design of a monitoring system for the measurement of soil moisture and suction in the unsaturated silty soils of a river embankment has been carried out, with the purpose of linking the collected data to the boundary conditions and hence obtaining a more accurate estimate of the riverbank probability of failure. Furthermore, a general outline of the research project, its methodology and application are presented in the paper
