Esercizio di sparizione. Liveness e performance mediata in The Perfumed Garden di Raafat Majzoub
At the Drodesera Festival / Supercontinent 2017 was presented Lebanese artist Raafat Majzoub’s installation The Perfumed Garden / Hekmat, xx. Part of a larger project to write a serial novel that originated in 2012 and has not yet been completed, in this stage Majzoub participates in the installation by writing a new chapter of the novel from his residence in Beirut. Unlike other performances that saw the author present, Hekmat, xx / Dro is confronted with a particular performative strategy that discusses the degree of presence/ absence of the artist, reconfigured through the mimetic passage in the narrative form and distant intervention. By updating a document shared on the GDrive platform and displayed on the screen of a laptop open on a desk, the artist makes visible to the user the act of creating a piece of text while not being physically present. The group of users visits and interacts (listening, watching, acting) in a physical space and enters into a specific and complex relationship with the author. Examining the artist’s critical writings and comparing them with theoretical sources, the essay investigates Majzoub’s project by analyzing an experiment that employs different degrees of mediated performance to express a series of artistic, philosophical and political instances.Al festival Drodesera / Supercontinent 2017 è stata presentata l’opera The Perfumed Garden / Hekmat, xx dell’artista libanese Raafat Majzoub. Parte di un più ampio progetto di scrittura di un romanzo seriale che ha avuto origine nel 2012 e che tuttora non è stato completato, in questa tappa Majzoub partecipa all’installazione scrivendo un nuovo capitolo del romanzo mentre si trova nella propria residenza a Beirut. A differenza di altre tappe che vedevano presente l’autore, Hekmat, xx / Dro si confronta con una particolare modalità di fruizione che discute il grado di presenza/assenza dell’artista, riconfigurato attraverso il passaggio mimetico nella forma narrativa e l’intervento a distanza. Aggiornando in tempo reale un documento condiviso sulla piattaforma Google Drive che viene visualizzato sullo schermo di un laptop, l’artista rende visibile al fruitore l’atto di creazione di un brano di testo pur non essendo fisicamente presente. Il gruppo dei fruitori abita e interagisce (ascoltando, guardando, agendo) in uno spazio fisico ed entra in una specifica e complessa relazione con l’autore. Esaminando gli scritti critici dell’artista e confrontandoli con formulazioni teoriche, il saggio analizza il progetto di Majzoub approfondendo un esperimento che impiega diversi gradi della performance mediata per esprimere una serie di istanze artistiche, filosofiche e politiche

Blunt abdominal trauma: Back to clinical judgement in the era of modern technology
AbstractBackground and methodsAbdominal trauma poses a diagnostic challenge to most trauma surgeons. This study evaluates a clinical scoring system in 476 blunt abdominal trauma patients treated by the author over a period of 92 months. Patients were sorted into three groups according to the score results. Priority I group (160 patients) was subjected to an immediate laparotomy. Priority II group (200 patients) was treated according to the results of auxiliary investigations. Priority III group (116 patients) was kept under observation. The treatment outcome was used as a gold standard for the evaluation of the results.ResultsIn priority I and III groups (276 cases) the management was only dependent on the proposed clinical score with a 100% specificity, 88% sensitivity, 90% positive predictive value, 100% negative predictive value and an overall accuracy of 94%.ConclusionsThis scoring system (CASS) is helpful in ensuring rapid diagnosis and treatment, reduces time, costs and mortality that may result from improper and/or delayed diagnosis
Developing and testing guidelines for designing surprising products
LAUREA MAGISTRALELa sorpresa è diventata un argomento interessante nel mondo del design di prodotto; è stato dimostrato che la presenza di un elemento sorprendente all'interno di un prodotto aumenta l'interazione uomo-prodotto e l’apprezzamento in generale. Sono stati compiuti sforzi attraverso numerosi studi per capire cosa sia veramente il concetto di sorpresa e su cosa si basa, cosa rende sorprendenti alcuni prodotti e come si possono catturare i processi cognitivi coinvolti quando un utente valuta un oggetto probabilmente sorprendente. Tuttavia, mancava ancora una linea guida che permettesse a ingegneri meccanici e designer di esplorare sistematicamente la propria creatività per generare, infine, idee per prodotti sorprendenti. L'autore di questa tesi di laurea magistrale ha proposto delle linee guida per questo scopo, che vengono proposte attraverso una presentazione interattiva. Questa presentazione interattiva è stata testata per la sua usabilità come strumento metodologico da un set di ingegneri meccanici e designer industriali, ritenuti i destinatari delle linee guida. Inoltre, le sorpresa indotta dalle idee generate da detti ingegneri e designer è stata valutata da un insieme di partecipanti accuratamente filtrati. I risultati raggiunti durante entrambe le attività sperimentali hanno raggiunto gli obiettivi fissati e consentono alle linee guida proposte di fungere da solida base per ulteriori sviluppi, sulla base dei miglioramenti già ipotizzati dall'autore sia per incrementare l’efficacia delle linee guida proposte che la relativa procedura di verifica.Surprise has become an interesting topic in the world of product design; the presence of a surprising trigger within a product has been proved to increase human-product interaction and overall likeability. Efforts by numerous contributors have been made to understand what the concept of surprise truly is and what does it rely on, what makes some products surprising, and how can one capture the cognitive processes involved when a user assesses an arguably surprising object; however, there was yet to be a guideline, using which mechanical engineers and designers can systematically explore their own unique creativity to ultimately generate ideas for surprising products. The author of this master thesis has proposed guidelines that do exactly that in the form of an interactive presentation. This interactive presentation was tested for its usability as a methodological tool by a third party of mechanical engineers and industrial designers. Furthermore, the ideas generated by those said engineers and designers have been assessed whether if they are genuinely surprising or not by a set of carefully filtered participants. The results reached during both external tests met expectations and allow the proposed guidelines to serve as a firm base for further development; however, the author acknowledges some points where potential improvements are due in both the proposed guidelines and in the testing procedure
Experimental Investigation of RC Columns Confined with Ni-Ti Shape Memory Alloys Wires versus CFRP Sheets
The critical need to enhance existing strengthening methods with more efficient and effective ones has led to the evolvement of smarter and innovative class of materials termed Shape Memory Alloys (SMA). The SMA’s possess unique characteristic properties that lie in their ability to undergo large deformations and return to their undeformed shape through stress removal or heating process. Limited research studies conducted using SMA’s have shown high potential for their use in building industry. Results presented in this research study are from an experimental study that investigated the compressive behaviour of uniaxial concentrically loaded Nickel – Titanium (Ni-Ti) SMA-spirally confined RC columns and compared with RC columns confined with conventional CFRP sheets. The compression tests revealed that actively confining the concrete column with Ni-Ti SMA spiral wires increased the performance of the concrete dramatically. Additionally, the active Ni-Ti SMA-confinement system exhibited superior performance compared to the conventional passive CFRP-confinement system.The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page. Integrating the economic production model with deteriorating raw material over multi-production cycles
This paper considers an Economic Production Quantity (EPQ) model with deteriorating raw material and investigates the impact of deterioration on the production process. The EPQ base case with no deterioration is presented where raw material is ordered for multiple production cycles. We present the differential equations to calculate the on-hand inventory of raw material and present closed-forms expressions for the required order of raw material to result in a desired amount of effective raw material per order cycle. Closed-form expression for the total profit per unit time is obtained and we solve for the optimal production quantity of finished product per production cycle and the order quantity of raw material.
