    AUTHOR-SPECIFIC ADJECTIVES FOUND IN POETIC TEXTS BY CONTEMPORARY POETESSES

    Purpose. This article is devoted to the analysis of author-specific adjectives as neologisms found in texts by contemporary poetesses. The author aims to both define derivational models for the formation of IAN adjectives and identify the features of the functioning of adjectives in the text. Methodology. The method of the system scientific description is used in the work, implying the use of the methods of multi-aspect systematization of author-specific neologisms in accordance with the research task. Comparative-comparative method, implemented in observation, comparison and theoretical interpretation of the results of the new language material analysis, allows drawing conclusions upon carrying out the research. Results. In the course of the conducted research it was revealed that author-specific adjectives, found in the texts by V. Polozkova, A. Kudryasheva, D. Balyko, A. Rivelote represent the most numerous group of authorial neologisms. Having been created by productive models of addition, suffixation and prefixation, these lexemes express new semantic nuances in poetic texts, thus reflecting the special state of the persona. Practical implications. The results of this study can be used at university in the pedagogical practice of language teachers in the framework of studying Neology as an academic discipline as well as in analyzing contemporary poetry

The work investigates of whether it is possible to skip some of the assumptions of the Whitney's theorem. It turns out that if we do not assume the continuity of a function f : M → R, which is being extended from a general closed set M ⊂ Rn , then f is continuous from the remaining assumptions in the Whitney's theorem, but if we skip the continuity of a function d, which features in the Whitney's theorem (and plays a role of the generalised differential of the function f), then d is continuous from the remaining assumptions, but just for n = 1. Further, some proposals based on modifications of the assumptions of the Whit- ney's theorem are proved. For instance, the theorem of an existence of a C1 extension of a function f : (a, b)×[0, c), f ∈ C1 ((a, b)×(0, c)), for which is valid that the function gradf has finite limits in (a, b) × {0}.     Title: Surface Reconstruction from Structured-Light Images for Radiation Therapy, Author: Olesya Peshko, Location: ThodeIn this thesis the surface reconstruction problem for radiation therapy is studied. The knowledge of the body's surface in the affected area is required to design and deliver proper radiation treatment for cancer patients. We develop an inexpensive non-contact optical 3D surface scanner prototype. It can easily be mounted on an x-ray treatment machine integrating unobtrusively into the current workflow. We start with preliminary information on radiation therapy, explaining how the patient's body surface is used in planning and treatment, and discussing the currently available methods. Then, we review the commonly used optical 3D surface measurement methods, and discuss the advantages of structured light techniques for the stated problem. In our method, the projected pattern is the regular rectangular grid of colour-coded circular spots. Images of the light pattern deformed on the surface are photographed by an off-the-shelf inexpensive camera and analyzed by the developed software. Finally, we present the special purpose image processing and surface reconstruction algorithm, implemented as a MATLAB package, and provide the experimental results. Optimization procedures are used in the pattern recognition code to process low-quality images efficiently. Efficient synthesis of highly water-soluble BDPA derivatives that preserve the desirable DNP properties of BDPA and expand its application to aqueous systems is described. The narrow line radical applications in magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) are investigated focusing on thermal mixing (TM) DNP of pyruvic acid. Design considerations and efforts toward the synthesis of bi- and multiradicals for Cross Effect (CE) DNP, and experiments performed with mixtures of radicals and covalently bound hetero-biradicals are reported. Part II: Indoles are important heterocycles because of their presence as common structural motifs in natural products and pharmaceutical candidates.     Sustainable infrastructure technologies: impact and policy

    This dissertation presents three studies that examine localized spatial effects of sustainable infrastructure investments in several contexts. The first chapter estimates public local economic benefits and costs of contaminated land cleanup and redevelopment through New York’s Brownfield Cleanup Program. Unlike prior literature, I value site redevelopment separately from cleanup, assess whether green redevelopment adds value, and examine time to capitalization. Using a property level fixed effects model and controlling for time-varying shocks, I find that the program has added 4% to nearby property values, producing a $1.26 billion property tax gain that outweighs its public costs. Most benefits stem from program participation and site cleanup. Furthermore, site entry and site cleanup do not immediately capitalize into nearby property values and are valued by the housing market with a lag of approximately three years. The second chapter estimates the value of contaminated land cleanup through Illinois’ Site Remediation Program in the presence of foreclosures and demonstrates the potential consequences of not controlling for time-varying unobservables in hedonic regressions. Failure to control for incidence of foreclosures, which can act as a time-varying correlated unobservable, can lead to overestimation of the property effects of contaminated site participation in SRP by as much as 46% in absolute terms. Mean differencing of time-varying neighborhood amenities substantially reduces this bias. Given that foreclosures may be correlated with a myriad of neighborhood amenities, these findings provide cautionary evidence suggesting that studies employing hedonic analysis should control for time-varying market conditions. The third chapter studies electricity consumption patterns generated by newly commissioned renewable energy plants in Indonesia to determine whether these facilities provide electricity to the regions in which they are located. This paper uses a novel application of satellite nighttime light data used as a proxy for energy consumption combined with data on geocoded locations of 15 renewable energy plants and Village Potential Statistics survey for Indonesia. I estimate a difference-in-difference model to compare the intensity of nighttime lights in nearby areas around incoming plants to that in geographically matched locations before and after each plant becomes operational. Results show that a 1% increase in capacity of a newly commissioned renewable energy plant leads to a 0.09% increase in nighttime lights relative to the matched control group. This corresponds to a 0.15% increase in residential electricity consumption and implies that local populations benefit, although to a small degree, from the energy these plants produce. Vita.Includes bibliographical references.Metabolic expansion was a key event facilitating the transition of early plants from aquatic to terrestrial environments and their subsequent radiation on land. The breadth and diversity of plant specialized metabolism reflects upon the adaptive innovations that took place during plants' colonization of land in the past 500 million years. Moreover, these rich metabolic networks are valued for the array of bioactive molecules they encompass, many of which have industrial and pharmaceutical applications. Studies of plant specialized metabolic pathways reveal that most of these arose as extensions of pre-existing enzymes and metabolites, leveraging promiscuous enzymatic activities and opportunistic gene duplication events to produce novel metabolic traits. The goal of this dissertation is to examine the mechanisms of enzyme promiscuity with regard to the expansion of plant specialized metabolism. First, we probed the structural and dynamic bases of substrate promiscuity hydroxycinnamoyltransferase (HCT), a member of the BAHD acyltransferase family, which has contributed significantly to the diversification of specialized metabolism throughout land plant evolution. We subsequently generated an Arabidopsis thaliana line containing a loss-of-function hct mutation and demonstrated that the mutant phenotype can be complemented with orthologous HCTs in order to establish an in vivo system to study promiscuity. Finally, we characterized a case of independent emergence of rosmarinic acid biosynthesis, a specialized metabolic trait, in the closely related Boraginaceae and Lamiaceae plant families.     Digital resources for Enets : A descriptive linguist’s view

    The paper describes digital resources available for Enets, an endangered Northern Samoyedic language: a multimedia dictionary and a digital corpus, both created by the author with her collaborators. Possible uses of these resources for linguistic research are discussed with the help of several examples. The dictionary is shown to seize limits of phonetic variation involving a mixture of two vowel phonemes, and the corpus is shown to provide a better description to grammatical structures involving ditransitive semantics.     Barriers to internationalization of SMEs in emerging markets : The impact of cultural constraints on the market entry choice of Swedish SMEs in Russia

    Internationalization is important for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) since it is a way to survive and to grow. Emerging markets have enormous latent possibilities for SMEs but behind the possibilities there are potential risks linked to political and institutional factors, uncertain economic and market conditions, and unknown business environments. National culture is one of the factors that create distance between home and host countries. In this paper, the author intends to examine the importance of cultural distance in the internationalization process and the relationship between the international experiences and cultural distance. The author focuses on the internationalization process of Swedish SMEs in Russia. Since culture is a complex phenomenon, the author scrutinizes the nature of cultural distance by employing a qualitative method by in-depth interviewing of managers from two Swedish SMEs. The theoretical framework is important for the analysis and consists of the Uppsala internationalization model and Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. Through the analysis of empirical data and previous research, the author finds that there are significant cultural differences between Russia and Sweden but the role of cultural distance in the internationalization process of the Swedish firms in Russia should not be exaggerated. The author’s conclusions are that cultural distance as a part of psychic distance has influence on the choice of entry mode though its impact is implicit and comes along with other factors. Another finding is that the international experiences of the firms have a great influence on the internationalization process - in the way that cultural distance becomes less important.
