    Multi-Document Information Consolidation (Dagstuhl Seminar 19182)

    This report documents the program and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 19182 "Multi-Document Information Consolidation". At this 5-day Dagstuhl seminar, an interdisciplinary collection of leading researchers discussed and develop research ideas to address multi-documents in machine learning and NLP systems. In particular, the seminar addressed four major topics: 1) how to represent information in multi-document repositories; 2) how to support inference over multi-document repositories; 3) how to summarize and visualize multi-document repositories for decision support; and 4) how to do information validation on multi-document repositories. General talks as well as topic-specific talks were given to stimulate the discussion between the participants, which lead to various new research ideas

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     The Moral Debater: A Study on the Computational Generation of Morally Framed Arguments

    An audience's prior beliefs and morals are strong indicators of how likely they will be affected by a given argument. Utilizing such knowledge can help focus on shared values to bring disagreeing parties towards agreement. In argumentation technology, however, this is barely exploited so far. This paper studies the feasibility of automatically generating morally framed arguments as well as their effect on different audiences. Following the moral foundation theory, we propose a system that effectively generates arguments focusing on different morals. In an in-depth user study, we ask liberals and conservatives to evaluate the impact of these arguments. Our results suggest that, particularly when prior beliefs are challenged, an audience becomes more affected by morally framed arguments

    Reinforcement learning approaches to natural language generation in interactive systems

    In this chapter we will describe a new approach to generating natural language in interactive systems -- one which shares many features with more traditional planning approaches, but which uses statistical machine learning models to develop {\em adaptive} natural language generation (NLG) components for interactive applications. We employ statistical models of users, of generation contexts, and of natural language itself. This approach has several potential advantages: the ability to train models on real data, the availability of precise mathematical methods for optimisation, and the capacity to adapt robustly to previously unseen situations. Rather than emulating human behaviour in generation (which can be sub-optimal) these methods can find strategies for NLG which improve on human performance. Recently, some very encouraging test results have been obtained with real users of systems developed using these methods.In this chapter we will explain the motivations behind this approach, and will present several case studies, with reference to recent empirical results in the areas of information presentation and referring expression generation, including new work on the generation of temporal referring expressions. Finally, we provide a critical outlook for future work on statistical approaches to adaptive NLG

    The Context-Dependent Additive Recurrent Neural Net

    Contextual sequence mapping is one of the fundamental problems in Natural Language Processing. Instead of relying solely on the information presented in a text, the learning agents have access to a strong external signal given to assist the learning process. In this paper, we propose a novel family of Recurrent Neural Network unit: the Context-dependent Additive Recurrent Neural Network (CARNN) that is designed specifically to leverage this external signal. The experimental results on pubic datasets in the dialog problem (Babi dialog Task 6 and Frame), contextual language model (Switchboard and Penn Discourse Tree Bank) and question answering (TrecQA) show that our novel CARNN-based architectures outperform previous methods

    Neural machine translation for bilingually scarce scenarios:a deep multi-task learning approach

    Neural machine translation requires large amounts of parallel training text to learn a reasonable-quality translation model. This is particularly inconvenient for language pairs for which enough parallel text is not available. In this paper, we use monolingual linguistic resources in the source side to address this challenging problem based on a multi-Task learning approach. More specifically, we scaffold the machine translation task on auxiliary tasks including semantic parsing, syntactic parsing, and named-entity recognition. This effectively injects semantic and/or syntactic knowledge into the translation model, which would otherwise require a large amount of training bitext. We empirically evaluate and show the effectiveness of our multi-Task learning approach on three translation tasks: English-To-French, English-To-Farsi, and English-To-Vietnamese.</p
