3. märtsil 2006 kaitses TÜ arstiteaduskonna nõukogu ees meditsiinidoktori väitekirja Tiina Stelmach. Väitekirja teema oli „Epidemiology of cerebral palsy and unfavourable neurodevelopmental outcome based on child population of Tartu city and county, in Estonia: prevalence, clinical features and risk factors“ („Laste tserebraalparalüüsi ja ebasoodsa arengutulemuse epidemioloogia Eestis Tartu linna ja maakonna näitel: levimus, kliinilised vormid ja riskitegurid“). Töö juhendaja oli prof Tiina Talvik, oponent prof Matti Iivanainen Helsingi Ülikoolist.

Search for Chirality in Hydrogenated Magnesium Nanosilicates: A DFT and TD-DFT Investigation
The formation of silicate grains in the interstellar medium (ISM), especially those containing chiral surfaces like clinopyroxenes, is poorly understood. Moreover, silicate interactions with various forms of hydrogen – proton (H+), neutral H (HI), and molecular hydrogen (H2) – are of high importance as hydrogen comprises > 90% of the ISM gas budget and these species play important roles in the formation of new molecules in space. Furthermore, silicate surfaces catalyze the formation of H2 in the interstellar medium, formed on dust grain surfaces by H-H association. The technical difficulty of in situ laboratory investigations of nanosilicate nucleation using astrophysically relevant environmental conditions makes computational chemistry a useful tool in studying potential nanosilicate structures. Furthermore, chiral surfaces interacting with chiral organic molecules could serve as the templates that lead to the enantiomeric excess of l-amino acids and d-polyols detected in carbonaceous meteorites. However, in order for this effect to take place, an excess of one chiral form of a mineral is required to break the symmetry. This symmetry breaking event could have been due to asymmetric absorption of circularly polarized light by the nanosilicate as it traverses star-forming regions. We investigate this possibility using a metastable chiral form of an enstatite dimer as an input for density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent (TD-)DFT calculations to obtain various properties and the circular dichroism spectra. All in all, twenty-six magnesium nanosilicate structures were studied using varying degrees of hydrogenation: none, with HI, with H+, and with H2. The HSE06/aug-cc-pVQZ level of theory was used for the DFT calculations. TD-DFT calculations utilized the CAM-B3LYP/cc-pVQZ and ωB97X-D3/cc-pVQZ functional/basis set pairings. Results show that (1) all twenty-six structures have absorption bands that fall within the 0.6–28.3 µm range available with the newly launched James Webb Space Telescope and (2) there is a small enantioselective effect by UV-CPL on the eight chiral enstatite dimers (predicted g-values of up to 0.007). While the observed effect is small, it opens up the possibility that it is the inorganic material that becomes enantiomerically biased by UV-CPL, driving chiral enhancements in meteoritic organic molecules

Abstract: The article describes a case of iatrogenic complication as a result of the 26 tooth extraction in 50 year old female patient.

Generalized representation of handwriting: Evidence of effector independence
Previous analyses of writing data have provided qualitative evidence of temporal and spatial similarities across muscle effectors. In order to further explore the notion of effector independence in handwriting a single case study approach was adopted that employed quantitative analyses. A left-handed individual who lost his left hand and forearm in an automobile accident and wore a myoelectric arm was tested. After his accident he learned to write with the right hand developing this skill for 8 years. Once he was fitted with the myoelectric arm he began again to write with the left hand. Thus, the acquired writing patterns of both hands reflect two well-learned skills which utilize different muscle effectors. Wright's NAME-EQUATION paradigm (1990) was utilized which required the subject to write his name and the equation X + Y = Z with the dominant, non-dominant hand and the elbow of the dominant arm. A control subject was also tested. For the subject wearing a myoelectric arm (primary subject), kinematic and handwriting analysis revealed astonishing similarities between the different effectors tested. For the control subject, the obtained results showed that as the effectors changed so did the handwriting kinematics. The collective findings support the hypothesis that motor programs, the directives that guide skilled movement, can be generalized across different effectors, but only after considerable practice
On Leon Petrażycki's Critical Realism and Legal Realism
The author shows that Petrażycki adopted a form of critical realism, and that, despite him never using the exact term “legal realism”, his approach to legal phenomena can be regarded as a form of legal realism—if understood as critical realism applied to legal phenomena. In the first part of the chapter, the author presents Petrażycki’s critical realism. Here, his theory of perception and his conceptualization of deduction/induction as a scientific method (akin to Popper’s method) is presented. In the second part of the chapter, the author shows that Petrażycki’s theory of law, as well as his legal dogmatics and legal policy, should be all regarded as forms of legal realism. To this goal, after presenting Petrażycki’s distinction between objective-cognitive and subjective-relational sciences, the manner in which Petrażycki uses terms meaning “real”, “realist”, “realistic”, is examined. When reconstructing Petrażycki’s conception of legal dogmatics, the author also draws on Lande’s writings—the most consistent developer of Petrażycki’s ideas
