    No full text
The treatise by Archange Tuccaro : Trois dialogues de l9exercice de sauter et de voltiger en l9air was dedicated to king Henri IV by the author in 1599. The book represents the fruits of the meeting of two cultures : the French and the Italian ones. By showing the utility of physical education for young aristocrats as a form of civilité, and by explaining the method of performing leaping and tumbling, the author contributes to contemporary debates about dignity of dance and he gives legitimacy to actors, dancers and to their art. The many learned sources corroborate this aim which places Tuccaro among the defenders of virtuous work of actors during the age of Counter-Reformation

Reading the impressive plaster sculptural group of Martinuzzi (1963, signed) inside the Santa Maria of Lourdes Church, at Mestre – an unicum in the artistic production of our sculptor – the author finds stylistic references to the long course of the venetian plastic art, from Byzantine influences to that 15th century ones, and more recent formal consonances to the main avant-garde movements of the 1900 first decades

The distinct role of the flexible polymer matrix in catalytic conversions over immobilised nanoparticles

    No full text
Polymer resins with immobilized metal nanoparticles represent highly promising materials for attaining intelligent and ecologically friendly catalysts. Control of the dynamic swelling behaviour of the polymer resins enables the on/off-switching of the activity of the encapsulated metal nanoparticles, thereby allowing conversion and selectivity to be controlled at a specific time of the chemical reaction. This paper presents a study on the distinct role of the polymer support. Here, the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene was chosen as a model reaction, and nanoparticles of different metals were taken into account. The course of the reaction revealed the essential role of the polymer resins in controlling the diffusion, in particular of the reagents, to and from the catalytically active sites on the surface of the nanoparticles thereby influencing the catalytic activity of the metal and opening up a new approach to catalytic engineering

Accelerating the transition batch to continuous in pharmaceutically relevant hydrogenation processes

The transition from batch to continuous manufacturing is crucial to deliver faster, more selective, safer and automated processes in the fine chemical and pharmaceutical industry. Among the different approaches that can be used to help this transition, this thesis focuses on the implementation of process analytics, reactor technologies, kinetic studies and the development of protocols. Hydrogenation processes have been selected for their industrial relevance. Chapter 3 focuses on the development of a 7-step workflow for the deprotection of a complex and expensive oligopeptide. It was shown that the deprotection of this complex molecule in a packed bed reactor could be mimicked by using a simpler surrogate compound in the presence of additives. The derived workflow was able to minimize the consumption of the real compound, thus minimizing the perceived risk of failure. For the given compound, the workflow could deliver a process able to continuously deprotect the oligopeptide for >6 h, with a yield and a purity of >95%. Chapter 4 studies the hydrogenation of CBD, ∆8-THC and ∆9-THC over different metal-coated catalytic static mixers. Pd/alumina, Pd-electroplated and Ru/alumina catalytic static mixers (CSMs) displayed low activity, poor selectivity with the formation of impurities, or rapid catalyst deactivation. Pt/alumina CSMs displayed instead high activity in the conversion of all the compounds and we managed to obtain excellent yields of H2CBD (90%), H4CBD (95%) and HHC (98%) at temperatures lower than 80 °C, a pressure of 20 Barg and with short contact times (<544 s). At temperatures above 80 °C we observed linear deactivation of the CSMs, that we linked to a combination of internal mass transfer limitation and a decrease in the available catalyst surface for the accumulation of both starting material and products. The lump kinetics of the hydrogenation of CBD was finally studied in continuous and at steady state, also including the deactivation of the CSMs. Chapter 5 displays the use of dynamic flow experiments with real-time analytics to rapidly model the progress and selectivity of the complex hydrogenation of 4¬hydroxy acetophenone, whose concentrations were followed with process analytics and partial least squares models. Three different CSMs, Pd/alumina, Pt/alumina and Ru/alumina, displayed different activity and selectivity. Batch-approximated and plug flow models were used to study the kinetics, which was able to provide a quantitative approximation of the reaction progress, explaining the different selectivity and help with a further in silico reaction optimization and testing. This thesis highlights that often a single methodology is not capable of capturing all the aspects of process development, but many tools are available to address the challenges in the best possible way.Stefano Martinuzzi, Dott.Mag.Dott.

Reduction in respiratory exacerbation rate in patients with severe bilateral cerebral palsy following daily PEP-mask therapy: a retrospective study

    No full text
Respiratory complications caused by the inability to protect the upper airways and ineffective cough represent a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with cerebral palsy (CP). Even though the application of Positive End-Expiratory Pressure (PEP) through a face mask has gained large popularity as a technique to prevent bronchial mucous encumbrance, its long term effects on clinical course and respiratory function in individuals with CP have not been investigated
