UGA School of Law leads state in bar exam passage rate State’s flagship law school continues tradition of preparing grads for legal careers
Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia School of Law saw a high percentage of its graduates pass the July 2016 Georgia bar exam.
The passage rate for first-time test takers from Georgia Law was 87.5 percent, 12.2 percentage points higher than the state average of 75.3 percent for ABA-approved law schools. For all Georgia Law graduates who took the July 2016 exam, 86.1 percent passed versus the state average of 71.1 percent.
“Georgia Law is committed to providing our students with the knowledge and skills they need to be well-prepared once they graduate and begin their careers,” Georgia Law Dean Peter B. “Bo” Rutledge said. “These exam results show how our faculty’s dedication to first-rate legal training—combined with our students’ dedication to learning—are making us successful in this endeavor.”
The bar exam is administered twice annually by the Supreme Court of Georgia Office of Bar Admissions, and passing it is required in order to receive a license for practicing law in the state of Georgia.

In Search of Communication Satisfaction at the State Bar of Georgia
It has long been established that “communication is of fundamental importance in the operation of all organizations, and a knowledge of the efficiency of the general communication system is vital to achieve high levels of organizational effectiveness” (Greenbaum, Clampitt, & Willihnganz, 1988, p. 245). With this in mind, over the past forty years many organizations have turned to communication audits to identify strategies to improve their organizations’ communication practices. One such organization is the State Bar of Georgia. Using Downs and Hazen’s (1977) Communication Satisfaction Questionnaire, this study assessed the health/effectiveness of the Bar’s formal and informal communication channels, identified problems and made recommendations for improvement. In addition to gaining a better understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the Bar’s existing communication channels, the audit showed how communication practices at the Bar relate to employee job satisfaction
UGA leads state in Georgia bar exam passage for ninth straight year
For the ninth straight year, University of Georgia graduates lead the state in the Georgia bar exam passage rate. School of Law graduates, who sat for the July 2022 exam, posted the highest rate for first-time takers among all of the state\u27s law schools, and almost 8% ahead of the overall first-time passage rate for Georgia law schools.
The University of Georgia School of Law is very proud to lead all Peach State law schools with the highest first-time Georgia bar exam passage rate for the ninth straight year, Dean Peter B. Bo Rutledge said. We congratulate our students on their success. While our overall passage rate exceeded 90%, we always strive for 100%, and these results dovetail with our strong Ultimate Bar Passage rate of 97.7% for the Class of 2020 (and an equally strong result anticipated for the Class of 2021). We take seriously our partnership with students and employ a variety of initiatives including bar prep course stipends, a study-buddy program and a voluntary targeted curriculum focused on writing and supplementary testing skills. As the School of Law seeks to redefine what it means to be a great national public law school, we remain committed to all of our students and will work with them to achieve future success
Changes in Georgia Restaurant and Bar Smoking Policies Between 2006 and 2012
Introduction: The purpose of this study is to examine the change in smoking policy status among bars and restaurants since the Georgia Smokefree Air Act of 2005 was implemented and identify restaurant and bar characteristics that are associated with allowing smoking.
Methods: Data was obtained from similar Georgia indoor air surveys conducted in 2006 and 2012. Both surveys were designed to gather information about restaurant and bar smoking policies and examine owner and manager perceptions of the Georgia Smokefree Air Act. Descriptive analysis and paired sample t-tests were performed to identify changes in smoking policy status and other variables over time. Chi-square and logistic regression analysis were used to test for significant associations between establishment smoking policy status and other characteristics.
Results: The percent of restaurants and bars in Georgia allowing smoking nearly doubled from 9.2% in 2006 to 18.2% in 2012. The analysis showed a statistically significant increase in the percentage of establishments allowing smoking when minors are present. After adjusting for the effects of other variables, three variables were significant predictors of allowing smoking: having seats for drinking outdoors, having a liquor license, and generating greater than or equal to 25% of gross sales from alcohol.
Conclusions: The Smokefree Air Act was enacted to protect the health and welfare of Georgia citizens, but the percentage of establishments allowing smoking has risen since it was implemented. These results suggest that policy makers should reevaluate the law and consider strengthening it to make restaurants and bars 100% smokefree without exemptions

Changes in Georgia Restaurant and Bar Smoking Policies From 2006 to 2012
Introduction The purpose of this study is to examine the change in smoking policy status among Georgia restaurants and bars from 2006 to 2012 and to identify restaurant and bar characteristics that are as- sociated with allowing smoking.
Methods Data were obtained from similar cross-sectional indoor air sur- veys conducted in 2006 and 2012 in Georgia. Both surveys were designed to gather information about restaurant and bar smoking policies. Weighted χ2 analyses were performed to identify changes in smoking policy status and other variables from 2006 to 2012. Weighted logistic regression analysis was used to test for signific- ant associations between an establishment’s smoking policy and other characteristics.
Results The percentage of restaurants and bars in Georgia that allowed smoking nearly doubled, from 9.1% in 2006 to 17.6% in 2012. The analyses also showed a significant increase in the percentage of establishments that allow smoking when minors are present. Having a liquor license was a significant predictor of allowing smoking.
Conclusion The Smokefree Air Act was enacted in 2005 to protect the health and welfare of Georgia citizens, but study results suggest that policy makers should reevaluate the law and consider strengthening it to make restaurants and bars 100% smokefree without exemptions.Originally Published in:
