Learning from biophysical heterogeneity: inductive use of case studies for maize cropping systems in Central America
Global society has become conscious that efforts towards securing food production will only be successful if agricultural production increases are obtained through mechanisms that ensure active regeneration of the natural resource base. Production options should be targeted in the sense of that their suitability to improve agricultural production and maintain natural resources is evaluated prior to their introduction. Biophysical targeting evaluates production options as a function of the spatial and temporal variability of climate conditions, in interaction with soil, crop characteristics and agronomic management strategies. This thesis contributes to the development of a system-based methodology for biophysical targeting. Cropping system simulation and weather generator tools are interfaced to geographical information systems. Inductive use of two case studies - a green manure cover crop and reduced tillage with residue management - helped to develop the methodology. Insight is gained into the regional potential for and the soil and climate conditions under which successful introduction of these production options may be achieved. The resulting information supports regional stakeholders involved in agriculture in their analysis and discussion, negotiation and decision-making concerning where to implement production systems. This process can improve the supply of appropriate agricultural production practices that enhance production and conserve soil and water resources
NORMalize 2024: The Second Workshop on Normative Design and Evaluation of Recommender Systems
Recommender systems are among the most widely used applications of artificial intelligence. Their use can have far-reaching consequences for users, stakeholders, and society at large. In this second edition of the NORMalize workshop, we once again seek to advance the research agenda of normative thinking, considering the norms and values that underpin recommender systems, as well as to introduce the concept to a broader audience. We aim to bring together a growing community of researchers and practitioners across disciplines who want to think about the norms and values that should be considered in the design and evaluation of recommender systems, and to further educate them on how to reflect on, prioritise, and operationalise such norms and values. NORMalize 2024 is a half-day workshop consisting of a combination of paper presentations and an interactive session, building upon its successful full-day run last year at RecSys’23
Duplications of proximal 16q flanked by heterochromatin are not euchromatic variants and show no evidence of heterochromatic position effect
Extra euchromatic material was found within the major heterochromatic block of chromosome 16 (16qh) in one de novo case and seven members of two families. In contrast to the euchromatic variants of chromosome 9 (9qh), which are derived from pericentromeric euchromatin, molecular cytogenetics confirmed that these duplications were of 16q11.2-->q12.2 in the de novo case, of 16q11.2-->q13 in three members of family 1 and 16q11.2-->q12.1 in four members of family 2. The duplication had arisen as a post-zygotic mitotic event in the mother of family 1 and been transmitted paternally in family 2. An insertional mechanism of origin is proposed for the duplications in case 1 and family 1. Expression at the 16q13 matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP2)locus in families 1 and 2 was proportional to genomic copy number and not therefore consistent with position effect silencing due to the flanking blocks of heterochromatin. We conclude that proximal 16q duplications within 16qh are not novel euchromatic variants but associated with a variable phenotype including developmental delay, speech delay, learning difficulties and behavioural problems. The behavioural problems in families ascertained through affected children are much less severe than those encountered in previous patients ascertained as adults
Invitation to David Bishop from the Order of United Americans for a celebration of George Washington's birthday, February 1858
The Order of United Americans, also known as the Know-Nothings, formed in the mid-1800s to support the rights of native-born Americans over those of immigrants, and to combat what they saw as foreign influences on America. This letter is an invitation to Order member David Bishop, to a celebration in honor of George Washington's birthday. Page 1 shows the actual letter, and page 2 is the transcripts of the letter
