    Control and Automation Education and UN SDGs: Alignment of TC 9.4 - Current Status and Future Directions

    This paper describes and reviews the activities of the IFAC Technical Committee on Control Education and their relationship with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). In particular, Goal 4 - Quality Education - is addressed, and we discuss how the TC activities ensures inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all. Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) of the United Nations focuses on accessible, inclusive, and high-quality education. By promoting lifelong learning opportunities, gender equality, skills enhancement for employment, and sustainable development education, TC9.4 initiatives set out in this paper address key targets of SDG4. The paper outlines various resources and strategies, including online resources, interactive tools, virtual laboratories, and benchmark problems, aimed at enhancing control education globally. Emphasizing the importance of shared resources in reducing education costs and promoting inclusivity, the report underscores the role of education in societal advancement and the significance of control systems in addressing contemporary challenges for sustainable development

    In an era of rapid advancements in highly intelligent digital systems, blockchain, and other transformative technologies, the role of control and automation in shaping human civilization is of paramount, even critical, importance. This paper examines the strategic significance of IFAC's Social Systems Coordinating Committee (CC), a unique multidisciplinary global community of researchers and practitioners comprising leading universities, research centers, industry partners and international agencies at the forefront of integrating technological and societal progress. This paper reports the results of a strategic "milestone" review, including an extensive meta-analysis of the Social Systems CC's five Technical Committees (TCs) and their activities. It uncovers key themes emphasizing this CC's contributions to models, systems, infrastructures, and operations. Using content analysis and word clouds, 272 keywords were refined to elucidate the main themes of the CC, revealing significant current and future collaborations with other IFAC communities and external organizations. The paper identifies high- potential new cooperation opportunities between this CC and the other IFAC CCs and their TCs, suggesting ways to achieve these collaborations. The findings highlight the Social Systems CC's unique position at the heart of the global automation and control community, where it offers practical applications in planning, management, and sustainability as well as fostering cross-sector cooperation crucial for human progress and effective humanitarian and environmental responses. This paper underscores the Social Systems CC's role in advancing control science and automation systems engineering to tackle pressing societal challenges, advocating for a future where technology and human systems synergize for the global well-being of all living systems

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Systems and Control for Societal Impact:IFAC TC 9.2 Visions and UN SDGs

    The digital revolution has opened numerous new possibilities for control systems solutions with potential for widespread societal impacts. Thus, it is important to explore how the design of control systems can be performed in such a manner that these impacts can be steered towards contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). The IFAC Technical Committee 9.2, Systems and Control for Societal Impact, is deeply interested in maximizing the benefits of automation, control and intelligent systems for society while avoiding their possible negative effects by anticipating potential adverse effects. The TC 9.2 is building its vision and activities along the emerging new field of cyberphysical-human systems (CPHS). This field is growing due to the proliferation of interactions between humans and (embedded, networked, interconnected) cyber-physical systems (CPS). The interplay between humans and CPS leads to new societal impacts and requires new tools for directing and guiding these impacts. Moreover, such interactions in CPHS require interdisciplinary collaborations between engineers and social and behavioral scientists and humanists for achieving the responsible development of CPHS. In this paper, we recap the TC9.2 topics and visions. We discuss the responsible development of CPHS which is the driving goal of the TC9.2 committee. We initiate an analysis to relate TC 9.2 topics with UN SDGs, through the idea of “six transformations”. The importance of stages of research development driven by SDG goals as well as the importance of individuals, corporations, and governments in this responsible design of systems is also highlighted. The close relation of the TC 9.2 visions with Digital Revolution for Sustainable Development through CPHS is discussed in detail. Relations with other transformations are also studied

    In this contribution to the Session The Roles and Responsibilities of Scientists and Engineers in Achieving a Just and Sustainable World at the SWIIS (Supplementary Ways of Improving International Stability) 2012 conference International Stability and Systems Engineering, I argue that the possessive market society (Macpherson's concept, here explained briefly) is unreformable and that radical changes in the future are inevitable, mainly for ecological reasons. I discuss some historical cases and current progress. I propose two principles (concerning basic human needs and the control/autonomy balance) as the foundation on which further research is built and make some broad-brush suggestions about the nature of such research

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
