Paul Bourget, écrivain engagé
Paul Bourget, A committed writer, Yehoshua Mathias.
In the France of the early twentieth century, Paul Bourget's figure is that of a successful novelist who became gradually a «committed author». A monarchist, deeply conservative, passionate defender of religion and the family as the vital bases of the social order, he thus became the bard of the bourgeois ethic faced with the destabilization of modernity.Mathias Yehoshua. The reality of fiction: the ECO by Mathias Goeritz
Abstract
This article covers the full biography of a building, the Experimental Museum El Eco, designed by Germanborn and Mexican émigré artist and architect Mathias Goeritz. It provides an approach intersecting the biography of the author, the history of the building, and prominent individuals of the two cultural traditions, German and Mexican, who participated in the creation of a very special and unique building: El Eco. On the one hand, the ethics of Expressionism, the interest in non-European art, the cult of primitivism and the aesthetic system of the pair of concepts abstraction-empathy, all stemming from German culture. On the other, the pantheistic religiosity of landscape, zoomorphism and anthropomorphism, the interest in masks, and the aesthetics of monumental scale, stemming from pre-Cortesian Mexican culture. Taking the stance of intertwining Mathias Goeritz parcours with those of individuals and issues from his German past and his Mexican future – highlighting the figures of Wilhelm Worringer, Paul Westheim, Luis Barragán, Edmundo O'Gorman, and Ida Rodríguez Prampolini – this article proposes a return trip from fiction to reality, following in the footsteps of the author and comparing them with the pathway of the very building El Eco
Oswald Mathias Ungers and Sol LeWitt: Variations
One of the fundamentals of Oswald Mathias Ungers work is the definition of a new unity between art and architecture. What this investigation is focused on is the identification of the intersection point between art and architecture, considering the project for the Entrance to the Kaiserthermen in Trier (20032007) as case study, revealing the system of theoretical, methodological and compositional correspondences. Plastic art is Ungers' main interlocutor: one of the author's most important references is Sol LeWitt (1928-2007), an artist he admired and collected. Setting the work of Oswald Mathias Unger and Sol LeWitt side by side, offers the opportunity to underline the shared interpretation that the two authors have of the world of forms postulated by Henri Focillon (1881-1943) in Life of Forms, according to which form, autonomous with respect to time and place, has its own universe, governed by its own laws, space and matter. According to these premises, we propose to read Trier's building through the instruments of art, following the hypothesis that in this project art embodies a creative and positive component in the definition of architecture, a cultural stimulus that guides the author in the design process
Mesoporous film architectures and step gradient formation
The development of novel devices along with technological progress of our time requires miniaturization and compartmentalization, and with this nanotechnology. For example, future innovative solutions are urgently pursued for life-inspired sustainable water and energy management. Nanoscale pores and channels, as one field within nanotechnology, hold great potential in mimicking the outstanding transport phenomena of their biological paragons. Such transport properties, as observed in biological pores and channels, originate from complex architectures and are influenced by pore geometry, surface charge distribution, chemical composition, and wettability. However, desired transport properties in advanced applications require enhanced control of surface functionalization in nanoscale pores and channels along with nanoporous material architecture design.
In this regard, mesoporous silica thin films represent suitable model materials for nanoporous material architecture design providing ordered nanoscale pores and nanoscale film thicknesses. In this work, mesoporous silica thin films were investigated to create mesoporous step gradient architectures with respect to pore size, surface wettability, and surface charge. This work was divided into three main sections: i) generating a material library allowing step gradient design, ii) the fabrication of mesoporous architectures, and iii) (nano)local polymer placement into such multilayer architectures.
To create mesoporous architectures, a material library was built in the first place. Thereby, the ionic pore accessibility of hydrophilic mesoporous silica thin films was investigated in dependence of preparation parameters, i.e. the template removal. Hydrophobic mesoporous silica thin films with tunable surface wettability were developed using co-condensation of tetraethylorthosilicate and methylated silica precursors resulting in mesoporous (organo)silica thin films. As a side note, an enhanced chemical stability in basic environment was observed for hydrophobic thin films. To replace petro-based templating macromolecules, hydroxypropyl cellulose was successfully applied as bio-based structure directing template for the generation of mesoporous silica thin films with permselective ionic pore accessibility.
Mesoporous step gradient architectures were prepared by applying the developed material library combining mesoporous layers with orthogonal properties. Examples are: the fabrication of hydrophilic pore size step gradients, and the combination of layers with different wettability. Interestingly, investigation of mesoporous wettability step gradient films with respect to the ionic pore accessibility in dependence of the hydrophobic top layer’s thickness showed an overcoming of the hydrophobic layer through electrostatic attraction of the hydrophilic bottom layer in case of the thinnest hydrophobic top layer.
Regarding local polymer placement, multilayer step gradient mesoporous film formation turned out to be advantageous, too. For example, the layer-selective polymer functionalization of hydrophilic double layered mesoporous silica thin films was achieved by predisposition of a single layer, followed by selective iniferter binding. Layer-selective polymer grafting was achieved resulting in step gradients with charge density control. To further investigate the limits of polymer placement in mesoporous film architectures, plasmonic metal nanoparticles were incorporated into mesoporous silica thin films. These particles served as nanoscopic plasmonic light source and were combined with photopolymerizations. Investigation of the prepared mesoporous composite materials allowed precise placement of the nanoparticles in mesoporous silica thin films with tunable density. The concept of nanolocal polymer placement using plasmonic metal nanoparticles in combination with photopolymerization was demonstrated for two distinct polymerization approaches. Due to the sensitivity of the nanoparticle’s surface plasmons on the surrounding refractive index, such mesoporous composite materials further demonstrated application as sensing unit allowing to detect local refractive index changes, e.g. in consequence of nanolocal polymer placement

Mathias Niendorf. Das Grossfuertentum Litauen : Studien zur Nationsbildung in der Fruehen Neuzeit (1569-1795) : recenzija
Recenzijoje yra analizuojamas Mathiaso Niendorfo darbas, kuriame svarbiausias dėmesys yra skiriamas politinės tautos temai. Tokia tema yra dar mažai tyrinėta, bet pastaruoju metu jai skiriamas vis didesnis dėmesys. Recenzijoje yra nurodoma, kad M. Niendorfo darbas LDK istoriografijai svarbus naujų probleminių temų įvedimu. Savo darbe M. Niendorfas pristato LDK istorijos raidą po Liublino unijos iki 1795 m. Po to pradeda detaliai analizuoti problemą. Pažymima, kad naujumu labai išsiskiria ketvirtas M. Niendorfo darbo skyrius. Jis skirtas aptarti, kokį vaidmenį turėjo religingumas to laikotarpio tautos formavimuisi. This subject has been little examined yet, but it has recently received an increasing attention. The review points out that the work by Mathias Niendorf is significant to historiography of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, since it introduces new problematic topics. In his work, Mathias Niendorf presents the development of the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania after the Union of Lublin until 1795. Afterwards, he begins a detailed analysis of the problem. It should be stressed that chapter 4 of the work by Mathias Niendorf is clearly distinguished by its novelty. It discusses the role of religiosity in the formation of the nation in that period. In this topic, the author gives close attention to cults of saints, considering them an integration factor for a political nation. He also highlights that cults represent one of the major factors in the formation of a political community. It should be noted that Mathias Niendorf manages to use traditional subjects of historiography to the benefit of the analysis of his topic, although sometimes this can be considered to be hypotheses only. It should be emphasised that other chapters of the book praise myths of the descent of nations and rulers, and the legal structure, but underestimate the language that was held to be the main feature of nationality. The author formulates one more new thesis. He states that representatives of not only the caste of noblemen were a constituent part of the political nation; however, it does not mean that this statement is valid. It is worthwhile stressing that the author’s ability to “squeeze” the maximum out of historiography is a big advantage of the book. It should be highlighted that the research topic, which is new, interesting and encourages studies on nationality, makes the work valuable
