    In alternativa alle correnti interpretazioni di 'Dorian Gray' come romanzo sul doppio, il saggio rilegge il capolavoro wildiano alla luce delle dinamiche censorie dell'epoca, delle leggi sull'omosessualità e del rapporto autore/testo. La riluttanza del pittore ad esporre il ritratto di Dorian viene dunque riletta come proiezione dei dubbi dell'autore stesso riguardo alla pubblicabiltà della sua opera. Tale tesi è suffragata, oltre che da una serrata analisi del testo, anche dal confronto con una serie di metatesti (in particolare, le lettere di Wilde) e dalla ricostruzione delle autocensure autorali nelle tre principali versioni del romanzo
