In the thesis methods for the simulation based evaluation of camera supported driver assistance systems are developed. The definition “camera based” is used, because many systems use for the perception of the environment a camera and further sensors. The focused field of application for the methods is the hardware-in-the-loop test of driver assistance systems. The use case requires a functional end-to-end test of the electronic control units. Therefore the sensor data must be generated at the top of the signal processing pipeline. In the case of camera systems the generation of synthetic camera images by means of computer graphics is useful. The efforts are low compared to other systems, such as RADAR. Before the application of a simulation it is essential to perform a validation, because models are always simplifications of the reality. Therefore the accuracy of the computer graphics simulation for a plausible stimulation of the image processing applications is evaluated. Further possible fields of application of the simulation for the test and development are defined.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The advancements in medical imaging over the past decades have been remarkable and so is the relevance for today's medical procedures. The various imaging techniques have significantly improved both diagnosis and treatment. New insights have been gained and new therapy approaches have been developed. However, these advancements come at high costs. The required hardware and infrastructure are getting increasingly expensive. The enormous amount of data, generated by the scanners, needs to be stored and the data has to be processed, which is very time-consuming. To deal with these difficulties, high performance computer systems and sophisticated algorithms are used. A significant improvement can be achieved by the use of modern graphics hardware. The vector architecture of graphics processors, which combines numerous processing units into a single processor, is particularly suitable to process many data elements with the same processing directives. With respect to image processing this architecture is also very advantageous since mostly all data elements of an image or volume are processed in the same way which maps perfectly onto the graphics hardware. In combination with the for data streaming optimized memory interface of graphics hardware, the performance gain is considerable in comparison to a conventional implementation. However, the progress in algorithms in combination with specialized hardware causes software that is difficult to use. Along with the huge variety of different imaging modalities and the associated algorithms, this makes it difficult for the physician to work efficiently with the software. To counteract this development, among other things, the software developers have to improve the graphical user interface of the applications and optimize the workflows. During the work on this thesis, the software framework MedAlyVis (Medical Analysis and Visualization) was developed to support the physician in the work with image data. The workflow of processing and visualizing the image data is integrated into the application and modules for the different steps are provided. For performance improvements, most of the modules make use of programmable graphics hardware. In the course of preprocessing, filtering and registration are particularly time-consuming tasks and thus leave room for performance enhancements. In visualization, as the native application area of the hardware, the algorithms contribute to performance improvements as well as to quality enhancements. Yet, all the presented approaches are only of use, if they are applied to actual scenarios in medicine. Traditionally neurosurgery plays a leading role in the employment of new techniques. Due to the highly complicated problems and surgeries, neurosurgeons willingly adopt the new techniques for their activities. Consequently, the approaches presented in this thesis were first applied to diffusion tensor imaging and neurovascular compression which are two practical problems in neurosurgery.

Tobias Rittig Optimization Techniques in Computer Graphics and Appearance Fabrication Optimization, the process of improving an intermediate solution, has been applied in numerous fields of computer science and beyond. Visual computing has throughout been at the forefront of developing new techniques and applying them to synthesize or analyze visual reality. At the latest, the recent boom of deep learning has given attention to large- scale differentiable computation and the application of gradient-descent optimization. This thesis spans parts of this development in four shared first-author publications (three journal, one conference) and three co-authored journal papers. It shows how optimization algorithms are used in two distinct fields of computer graphics. First, the focus is on the emerging field of Appearance Fabrication using full-color 3D printing. We show the benefits of an iterative optimization loop on the sharpness and color accuracy of translucent printouts. Such a loop, consisting of a forward pre- diction and backward refinement, can be composed of various building blocks developed throughout the thesis. The forward prediction can be driven by accurate Monte Carlo path tracing or an approximate neural rendering solution. The backward refinement can rely on a heuristic or a gradient-descent..

Driving simulation is an essential research and development tool in car engineering and other sciences world wide. It allows to study driver behavior as well as to analyze and evaluate new car devices at early development stages, saving costs and time. To obtain research results which are transferable to reality, subjects must be provided with a highly convincing simulation environment. The driving experience should feel as real as possible so that subjects behave as they would do when driving a real car. Since human vision is significant for real driving, highly realistic image generation must be a fundamental part of driving simulation. In the past, the simulation of human vision has been widely neglected in driving simulation. This thesis addresses this shortcoming and focuses on real-time rendering techniques to drastically improve the image quality in high-end driving simulation software. Advanced rendering techniques developed at the department of driving simulation of BMW Group Research and Technology are presented that are valuable for high-quality image generation. The techniques described include the generation and rendering of terrains, the reproduction of road surfaces, the visualization of cars, the simulation of light and shadows and more. Aside from analyzing existing methodologies, novel rendering techniques that address the aforementioned visualization issues in driving simulation have been developed. All introduced algorithms are real-time capable and are well suited for the implementation on programmable graphics hardware. The presented rendering techniques improve the image generation quality of driving simulation software dramatically. This leads the simulation of vision much closer to the final goal of photo realism.

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

    EAR - Einsatzsynchrone Artefakt Reduktion

One field of application for the cone beam computed tomography (CT) is the dimensional measurement of components as e. g. cast parts by means of a nominal/actual-value comparison. The interpretation of the measured data is impaired due to the artefacts typical to industrial CT. The Iterative Artefact Reduction (IAR) represents an effective method for homogeneous components. This thesis presents the Synchronous Artefact Reduction (Einsatzsynchrone Artefakt Reduktion EAR), a new correction concept, that is based on the IAR to some extent. The use of the available nominal volume expedites the artefact correction ompared to the IAR. For this purpose the nominal volume has to be registered during the data acquisition via some 2D-X-ray projections. The registered volume can be used for the simulation of length projections which are then related to the intensities. In order to be able to dispense with an initial knowledge on the sought transformation the registration is separated into a global and a local phase. The former uses barycentral lines to determine the translation. The rest of the registration is performed intensity based. In oder to obtain an appropriate merit function this thesis introduces the concept of the Total Catchment Area (Absoluten Einzugsbereich AEB). Current 2D-3D-merit functions are compared to this AEB-property and to the precision of the realised registration results which results in the use of Normalised Mutual Information.

The photo-realistic reproduction of natural terrains is a classical challenge in computer graphics and the interactive display of non-trivial landscapes is only possible with recent graphics hardware. The reasons for this are the vast amount of data due to geometric detail of the terrain, vegetation and further objects, but also the inherent complexity of natural phenomena that are necessary to achieve convincing results. Realistic terrain rendering also has to consider the complex lighting conditions due to atmospheric scattering and further aspects such as the rendering of waterbodies and cloudscapes. One focus of this dissertation are procedural models for terrain elevation and texturing. They can either be used to create completely artificial, realistic landscapes, mimic real terrains by guiding the models with real-world data or augment acquired data with additional procedural detail. By this, we can reproduce natural scenes with the advantage of a compact procedural description. Another emphasis is placed on the interactive rendering of such terrains including specifically tailored level-of-detail methods and lighting computations for terrains and rendering techniques for complex plant models. We introduce a set of novel techniques and algorithms that address the aforementioned problems and achieve results in real-time with photo-realistic image quality using programmable graphics hardware. In particular, we propose new algorithms for a data-guided height field creation, realistic terrain surface texture generation, a novel level-of-detail method for terrain rendering and hardware friendly, efficient point-based rendering and splatting techniques. We also provide a comprehensive presentation of underlying theories and related work to put our work in perspective of the research area.
