    Measuring industry-science links through inventor-author relations: A profiling method

    No full text
    In this pilot study we examine the performance of text-based profiling in recovering a set of validated inventor-author links. In a first step we match patents and publications solely based on their similarity in content. Next, we compare inventor and author names on the highest ranked matches for the occurrence of name matches. Finally, we compare these candidate matches with the names listed in a validated set of inventor-author names. Our text-based profile methodology performs significantly better than a random matching of patents and publications, suggesting that text-based profiling is a valuable complementary tool to the name searches used in previous studies.innovation; industry-science links; text-based profiling;

    Author Co-Citation Analysis (ACA): a powerful tool for representing implicit knowledge of scholar knowledge workers

    No full text
    In the last decade, knowledge has emerged as one of the most important and valuable organizational assets. Gradually this importance caused to emergence of new discipline entitled ―knowledge management‖. However one of the major challenges of knowledge management is conversion implicit or tacit knowledge to explicit knowledge. Thus Making knowledge visible so that it can be better accessed, discussed, valued or generally managed is a long-standing objective in knowledge management. Accordingly in this paper author co- citation analysis (ACA) will be proposed as an efficient technique of knowledge visualization in academia (Scholar knowledge workers)

    U.S. trade policy towards developing countries

    No full text
    The United States has often been criticized for protectionist measures taken against developing country products. Yet, average agricultural protection has reemained practically nil in the U.S. over time, while rising in the European Common Market (E.C.M) and, even more, Japan. It further appears that manufactured imports from developing countries have increased much more rapidly, and reached higher levels, in the U.S. than in the E.C.M and, in particular, Japan. The U.S.-Japan comparisons for manufactured goods do not conform to the data on the extent of nontariff barriers, as measured by the share of imports from the developing countries which are subject to such trade barriers. The solution to the puzzle lies in part in the inadequacies of data on the share of imports subject to nontariff measures for gauging the protective effects of such measures and in part in the reliance on formal measures of protection in the United States as against the informal measures in Japan. More generally, one may explain the results obtained by reference to the openness of the U.S. market that has generally been more hospitable to imports from developing countries than have the markets of other industrial countries, particularly Japan.Poverty Assessment,Trade and Regional Integration,TF054105-DONOR FUNDED OPERATION ADMINISTRATION FEE INCOME AND EXPENSE ACCOUNT,Environmental Economics&Policies,Trade Policy

    Author disambiguation using multi-aspect similarity indicators

    No full text
    Key to accurate bibliometric analyses is the ability to correctly link individuals to their corpus of work, with an optimal balance between precision and recall. We have developed an algorithm that does this disambiguation task with a very high recall and precision. The method addresses the issues of discarded records due to null data fields and their resultant effect on recall, precision and F-measure results. We have implemented a dynamic approach to similarity calculations based on all available data fields. We have also included differences in author contribution and age difference between publications, both of which have meaningful effects on overall similarity measurements, resulting in significantly higher recall and precision of returned records. The results are presented from a test dataset of heterogeneous catalysis publications. Results demonstrate significantly high average F-measure scores and substantial improvements on previous and stand-alone techniques.

    Teleshopping: Tijd- en ruimte-effecten

    "Teleshopping: tijd- en ruimte-effecten" De ontwikkelingen in het gebruik van videotexsystemen zijn zodanig, dat ook teleshopping als een van de mogelijkheden een toenemende aandacht krijgt. Er is zowel vanuit Nederland als vanuit het buitenland weinig bekend over de effecten die teleshopping op tijdsbestedingpatronen en activiteitenpatronen heeft. Om meer feitelijke informatie te verkrijgen is een schriftelijke enquête uitgevoerd bij ongeveer 150 klanten van James Telesuper in Amstelveen. Twee motieven worden het meest genoemd voor het meedoen aan teleshopping: het grotere gemak, niet meer zo veel sjouwen (75%) en de besparing in tijd (47%). De onderzochte groep teleshoppers blijkt dan ook vooral te bestaan uit oudere alleenstaanden en uit jonge gehuwden of samenwonenden. Daarnaast bestaat een kleiner deel van de onderzochte groep uit jonge werkende alleenstaanden en uit "traditionele" huishoudens (werkende man, niet-werkende vrouw, kinderen. Naast het teleshoppen voor de dagelijkse artikelen blijft men boodschappen doen bij winkels. Het aantal winkelverplaatsingen in totaal lijkt minder te zijn, maar er komt niet duidelijk een andere activiteit . in de plaats tijdens de vrijgekomen tijd.OTB Research Institute for the Built Environmen

    Showing the essential science structure of a scientific domain and its evolution

    Category cocitation and its representation through social networks is proving to be a very adequate technique for the visualization and analysis of great scientific domains. Its combination with pathfinder networks using pruning values r=∞and q=n−1 makes manifest the essence of research in the domain represented, or what we might call the `most salient structure'. The possible loss of structural information, caused by aggressive pruning in peripheral areas of the networks, is overcome by creating heliocentric maps for each category. The depictions obtained with this procedure become tools of great usefulness in view of their capacity to reveal the evolution of a given scientific domain over time, to show differences and similarities between different domains, and to suggest possible new lines for development. This article presents the scientogram of the United States for the year 2002, identifying its essential structure. We also show the scientograms of China for the years 1990 and 2002, in order to study its particular national evolution. Finally, we try to detect patterns and tendencies in the three scientograms that would allow one to predict or flag the evolution of a scientific domain

    Dynamische verweking

    In deze thesis komt het onderwerp dynamische verweking aan bod, er wordt onderzoek gedaan naar het verschijnsel, waarbij is vastgehouden aan de volgende hoofdvraag: “hoe zit het verschijnsel dynamische verweking precies in elkaar, welke parameters hebben invloed op het verschijnsel, wanneer treedt het fenomeen op en hoe is dit te voorspellen?” deze hoofdvraag zal in deze thesis worden ontleed om zo stap voor stap antwoord te geven en het verschijnsel te kunnen verklaren.Civil EngineeringGeo-EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience
