The purpose of this thesis is to examine from a feminist perspective two novels of the Austrian writer, Marlen Haushofer (1920, Frauenstein-1970, Steyr): Die Tapetentur (1957) and Die Mansarde (1969).Both work were written in a "pre-feminist" period in the history of German women writers. However, with the aid of contemporary feminist approaches, they can be rediscovered and deciphered for the modern reader. In the first chapter I will introduce the theories to be applied, the biography of her author and the reception of the work, focusing on areas relevant to the topic of the thesis. The recurring themes of spatial isolation and speechlessness will then be analysed in terms of form and content. Through the observation of physical spaces and their psychological implications, and through the investigation of a new form of verbal expression and freedom, a process of writing continuity ("Fortschreibung") emerges from Haushofer's world. In the related characters of two women figures, Annette in Die Tapetentur and the unnamed heroine in Die Mansarde, Marlen Haushofer establishes a line of development in her work. At the end of her literary career, she succeeds in delivering to the reader her encoded version of the liberation of women from their fettered, hopeless existence
Feminist utopia and dystopia: Marlen Haushofer's Die Wand
Thesis (M.A.)--University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Humanities, School of Literature, Language and Media: German, 2013Why are we still talking about feminism today? Women now have the vote; they have been given the opportunity to pursue their career while also being a wife and/or mother. Instead of there having been an overhaul of the system, women have been tentatively accepted into the existing patriarchal system, forcing them to play according to its rules and expectations of woman. This realisation serves as the starting point for this research report, which uses the novel “Die Wand”, by postwar Austrian author Marlen Haushofer, to explore the contradictory situation women find themselves in within patriarchal society. In the novel, the female protagonist suddenly finds herself isolated but sheltered from patriarchal structures, as a see-through wall cuts her off from the rest of the world and an apparent nuclear disaster. This initially utopian existence is however soon shattered by the appearance of a male survivor, as he kills the protagonist’s animal companions. Though she shoots him dead, the return of patriarchy, in the form of the unknown man, nevertheless symbolises how woman can never truly free herself from patriarchal binds, and so utopia is seen as turning into dystopia
An Archetypal Examination on the work of “The Wall” by Marlen Haushofer
Çalışma, Avusturyalı yazar Marlen Haushofer’in Die Wand (Duvar) adlı eseri ekseninde, arketip kavramını ele almaktadır. Psikolojinin edebi eserleri çözümlemedeki yardımcı işlevi ile yazarın eser içerisine yerleştirdiği gizil mesajlar, arketipsel çözümleme ile gün yüzüne çıkarılmaya çalışılacaktır.It is an indisputable fact that literature is in interaction with other branches of science, and that this interdisciplinary interaction greatly enriches literary works. Because of this rich blend, literature is tightly bound to many disciplines. This study focuses on a concept that corresponds both to literature and to psychology. The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung, who is the prominent figure of analytical psychology, puts forward the concept of archetype, which can also be defined as the “first example.” Jung defines the collective unconscious through the concept of archetype. The archetype exists in the range of collective unconscious and corresponds to a cultural heritage coded within the individual. This study examines the concept of archetype using Marlen Haushofer’s novel Die Wand (The Wall) as a point of reference. With the aid of the psychology, which can function as a tool for decoding literary texts, and the hidden messages placed into the text by the author will be attempted to be revealed with the use of archetypal analysis

Der homme machine des 21. Jahrhunderts : a Von lebendigen Maschinen im 18.
