From utility to the enjoyment of life: the Bioeconomics of Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen. The influence on the Italian authors
No full textNicholas Georgescu-Roegen has experienced criticism directed at the theory of the behaviour of the consumer based on the usefulness and the excessive recourse to mathematical modelling. As such, he decided to address the complexity of human nature seeking new instruments of analysis resorting to the sciences of life and thermodynamics. In the essay, we analyze how from this criticism the Author manages to interpret the economic process in light of the entropy that sanctions an irreversible degradation of energy, one which he also extends to matter. Georgescu-Roegen states that man for his sustenance and his esosomatic evolution uses, through the economic system, matter and energy with a low entropy on the planet. As such, the relationship between man and the environment is neither only biological, nor only economic, but bio-economic. And the last aim of the economic process is not to use resources and to discharge waste products into the environment, but is «the enjoyment of life».
After having examined the progressive evolution of the concept of this author and the elements of the «enjoyment of life», we highlight how the bio-economical approach has been easily absorbed into the Italian tradition, where the theoretical contributions of analysis of the economic and social system in its entirety are numerous in order to realize the well-being of the individual and valuing the resources of the land in which they live

No full textInterest in questions of gender has grown in the course of time, and the literature has come to question the motivations that should make or do make public administrations sensitive to the issue of gender equality. The correlation between public finance and gender has been investigated in the economic approach, a central issue being the assessment of gender policy outcomes at the aggregate level of regional, national and international economies. However, gender issues can also be considered within the context of individual organizations. In relation to individual organizations, the contribution to current debate of the Italian School of Economia Aziendale (Business Management) is particularly significant. The Italian approach proposes a shift of perspective, from a conception of gender policies in the public sector as a cost or a generic duty towards equality, to a view of such policies as an activity necessary to ensure that each public agency responds effectively to the needs of its target community.This paper emphasizes how the Italian School of Economia Aziendale (Business Management) can add to international debate by examining gender issues from two angles: the objectives pursued by public agencies (the efficacy of gender policies) and the measurement of outcomes (the efficiency of gender policies)

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
