The determination of the Cp and Hp polymorphisms

    No full text
The phenotypes of the Cp and Hp serum polvmorphisms were de¬termined on a total of 22 Macaca fuscata fuscata. For the Cp types a single band was observed with a fast mobility in respect to the human Cp B band. Referring to the Hp system for some samples, in addition to the usual single band corresponding to the human Hp 1-1, one additional faint band which migrated in the approximate position of the slower¬moving human Hp 2-1 band was observed. Such a result is discussed

An unusual association of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, myelodysplastic syndrome, and diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma in a Caucasian man

We here report an unusual association of myelodysplastic syndrome, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), and diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) in a 62- year-old male.PNH is a stem cell disorder caused by a PIG-A gene mutation. As a consequence, blood cells completely or partially lack surface proteins that are tethered to the membrane through the glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor. The resulting absence of CD55 and CD59 molecules on red cells renders them sensitive to complement-mediated intravascular hemolysis and associated hemoglobinuria. In conclusion, in this patient, eculizumab was highly effective in controlling PNH activity and decreasing intravascular hemolysis; it greatly improved the quality of life, reduced the risk for thrombosis, and eliminated the need for blood transfusions, despite the presence of a concomitant MDS with an abnormal karyotype. Death was related due an aggressive form of high grade nH

A seven year anthropobiological survey on the distribution of abnormal hemoglobins in Cameroon.

Within the frame of an anthropobiological survey on some populations of Cameroon (1985-1991), Hb beta data were collected from numerous ethnic groups including Bakaka, Bamileke, Daba, Fali, Guiziga, Kanuri, Mada, Mafa, Mundang, Uldeme, Podokwo, Tali, Tupuri, Fulbe, Mandara, Ewondo and Bassa. Hb beta *S allele frequencies ranged from 0.008 +/- 0.003 (among Fali) to 0.152 +/- 0.020 (among Mandara) and 0.152 +/- 0.044 (among Podokwo), whereas Hb beta *S was found to be absent among Tupuri. Hb beta *C was observed among Bamileke (0.001 +/- 0.001), Fali (0.003 +/- 0.002), Fulbe (0.002 +/- 0.002), Mafa (0.005 +/- 0.005), Mundang (0.005 +/- 0.005), Tupuri (0.010 +/- 0.007) and Podokwo (0.015 +/- 0.015). The possible reasons for these variations in allele frequencies are discussed

GENETIC-VARIATION AT THE APO-B 3' HVR, D2S44, AND D7S2I LOCI IN THE EWONDO ETHNIC-GROUP OF CAMEROON

A sample of the Ewondo population (a Bantu-speaking group of Southern Cameroon) was analyzed for the polymorphism at three tandem repeated DNA loci (ApoB 3' HVR, D2S44, and D7S21). We observed a greater number of ApoB 3' HVR alleles (17) and a significantly higher estimated heterozygosity (.879+/-.011) than in previously surveyed populations, with the exception of U.S. Blacks. The higher genetic variability of Ewondo and U.S. Blacks was also shown by the ApoB 3' HVR allele-frequency spectra. A method for measuring population distances, based on cumulative fragment-size distribution, is described. Interpopulation comparisons for ApoB 3' HVR were carried out by this method and were compared with those obtained by a genetic distance measurement. The two sets of results showed a consistent pattern of population differentiation: the Ewondos and the U.S. Blacks clustered together and were well apart from both a Caucasian cluster (Swedes, U.S. Whites, Italians, and Germans) and other well-defined populations (Sikhs of India and Pehuence Indians of Chile). Profile distances were then computed from D2S44 and D7S21 binned data. This analysis indicated a genetic affinity between Ewondos, U.S. Blacks, and Afro-Caribbean Blacks and outlined the genetic diversity between Ewondos, Caucasians, and Asian Indians

Activation of the haemostatic process in patients with unruptured aortic aneurysm before and in the first week after surgical repair.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: It has been previously suggested that activation of coagulation and fibrinolysis may sometime occur in patients with unruptured aortic aneurysm. However, the incidence of this complication and the effect of surgical repair are unknown. The objective of our study was to gain further information on this topic. METHODS: We investigated activation of the hemostatic process in 20 consecutive patients with unruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. We then evaluated the effect of surgical repair of the vascular abnormalities. RESULTS: Both before and in the first week after surgery, the large majority of patients showed clear signs of activation of coagulation (increased plasma levels of prothrombin fragment 1 + 2 and fibrin peptide A), and many had low levels of the natural anticoagulant antithrombin III. Platelets were activated in all cases (high levels of plasma beta-thromboglobulin), and signs of platelet consumption (thrombocytopenia and/or increased mean platelet volume) were present in most of them. INTERPRETATION AND CONCLUSIONS: Activation of the hemostatic process occurs in nearly all patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm and could play a role in the hemorrhagic and thrombotic events that can complicate the clinical development of these subjects

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
