Velud fulgor meridianus. La «Vita» di papa Gregorio IX. Edizione, traduzione e commento

    No full text
The official biography of Gregory IX (1227-1241), handed down anonymously from the Liber Censuum of the Roman Church and unfinished, is a significant testimony to the history of the thirteenth-century papacy. His confrontation with Emperor Frederick II of Staufen, his relations with the religious movements of his time, his policy towards the Patrimony of St. Peter's and the city of Rome, his artistic patronage and life in the curia are narrated in a lofty and magniloquent Latin. Despite the richness of its contents, this source has often been approached with a certain diffidence, mainly due to the circumstances of composition and the ostentatious factiousness of the anonymous author, an open supporter of the pontiff. The edition, the first Italian translation and the historical commentary are preceded by an introduction that aims to shed light on the problems related to the genesis and purpose of the work within the pontifical historiographical tradition and the contemporary curial production

It is a bundle of documents on the phases of an important trial of the court of Henrich VI between the Bishop of Vercelli Alberto and the commune of Casale Sant'Evasio. The procedural file and other documents have been handed down in the form of certified copies from the middle of the 14th century. have been handed down. The essay attempts to analyse the circumstances of the creation of the copies and the probable assembly of the rotulus. A comparison with the contemporaneous tradition has made it clear that the copied documents were issued in the years 1346/1347 as part of a legal dispute between the commune of Vercelli and that of Casale Sant'Evasio before the Milanese judge Leone da Dugnano. As with other cases in the Vercellese tradition from the 14th century the 14th century, the parchment rotulus is considered the preferred medium for a trial record

A hitherto unknown letter by Innocent III regarding the Thronstreit, and the making of the Liber consuetudinum Mediolani of 1216. The present paper intends to draw attention to the additions to the codex Berlin, Staatsbibliothek–Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Ms. Lat. Fol. 462, entered by the Milanese judge Passaguerra with his own hand. The focus is especially on the last folium, on the recto side of which a hitherto unknown letter from Innocent III dated 8 November 1203 is copied, while the verso side contains a short treatise, entitled De feudis. The historical context of these texts and their entry into the manuscript help to throw light on the history of the commune of Milan during the first decades of the 13th century, with respect to its relations to the Papacy and the Empire, as well as in regard to the city’s society
