Automated assessment of lymphoid cells in chronic lymphocytic leukemia: correlation with prognostic features

    No full text
In order to correlate the presence of large unstained cells (LUC) with clinical staging and prognosis, a quantitative cytometric analysis of leucocyte popula-tions from 88 patients with B-CLL was performed us-ing a Technicon H 6000 multichannel automated flow system. The results showed a significant increase in LUC num-ber, in the percentage of LUC to white cells and LUC to lymphocyte ratio in stage II (according to Rai classification) and in stage B (according to Work-shop on CLL staging system) patients. Our data analysis further revealed that chemothe-rapy was more effective in reducing the LUC popu-lation than that of small lymphocytes. Finally, an in-crease in LUC count and percentage was found to coincide with deterioration of clinical status. These data lead us to suggest that a high number of LUC, in patients with CLL, may represent an unfavou-rable prognostic factor

Bone marrow stromal cells in acute promyelocytic leukemia: comparison with other acute myelogenous leukemia subtypes

Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) with t(15;17), significantly differs from other acute myelogenous leukemias (AML) by the prognosis which has been significantly improved after introduction of retinoic acid, as differentiating agent. In the attempt to clarify if APL differs from AML regarding stromal cell compartment too, bone marrow mononucleated cells (bmmnc) from 21 untreated AML patients (MO: 1 ; Ml : 4; M2:4; APL: 6; M4: 2; M5:4) were plated in long-term culture. The fibroblastoid clonogenic precursors (CFU-F/ 106 bmmnc; Collagen I/II/1II+, CD68+) and the endothelial colonies (CFU-En CD31+, Factor VIII+) content, as expression of angiogenic potential of the AML samples, were assessed after 15 days by immunohistochemical technique. Fibroblast confluence (see table), in T25 flask, was evaluated after 40 days by inverted microscope. Results are in detail described in the table below. Considering CFU-En. no-APL group display 3.8-fold value than control (1.1+/-1 vs 0.28+/-0.4; p=0.05), while this difference is not present in APL samples (0.5+/-1.1). In conclusion, the biologic characteristics of bm stromal cell was found to be different in APL, in comparison with other AML subvarieties. This may be due to the different nature of the diseases. Moreover, we give evidence of an high angiogenesis rate in AML which appeared more prominent in no-APL samples. CFU-F %Confluence p(wilcoxon) AMLfall cases) 4.4+/-4.T 50+/-30 0.01 AML 3.4+/-2.9 38+/-31 0.01 APL 7.6+/-2.1 71+/-11 not signif. Controls 12.3+/-4.4 90+/-10

Alpha interferon in T helper phenotype chronic lymphocytic leukemia: a report of three cases

    No full text
Three patients affected by T helper chronic lymphocytic leukemia were treated with low dose interferon alpha-2b (3 MU/m2 3 times weekly). The disease presented different pathologic expressions with diffuse skin lesions in one patient, a mild clinical course and a prolymphocytic variant with aggressive features, respectively, in the other two cases. A consistent response was observed within 3-6 weeks; by that time a reduction of blood and marrow lymphocytosis in the three patients and a regression of the cutaneous lesions were documented. Therefore, it should be emphasized that the use of alpha IFN, whose effectiveness on cutaneous T cell lymphomas has been already demonstrated, may represent an active agent in the treatment of leukemic T helper phenotype chronic lymphocytic proliferations

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Primary gastric lymphoma: Distribution and clinical relevance of different epidemiological factors

    No full text
BACKGROUND: Over the last 10 years the incidence of primary gastric lymphomas (PGL), and in particular those of MALT origin, has significantly increased. Recent works correlated this epidemiological observation to Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection. On the other hand, new evidence demonstrating that occupational exposure to pesticides and solvents has played an important role in the pathogenesis of non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) has emerged from studies involving large series of patients. METHODS: Thirty PGL patients, observed between 1986-1992, were subdivided according to HP infection, history of previous gastric disturbances (G) and exposure to pesticides and solvents (T). RESULTS: On the basis of these parameters we divided the patients into three groups: T+HP+ (8), T+HP- (7), T-HP+ (9). T+ patients had a positive history of gastric problems or a positive histological biopsy in 13.3% of cases, versus 66.7% in T- patients. The incidence of HP infection in the T+ group was 53%, which proved to be comparable to the statistics for northeastern Italy, while in the T- group the incidence of infection was 100%. CONCLUSIONS: On the whole these data suggest that HP infection could be considered a pathogenetic factor in 34% of patients, while occupational exposure to pesticides and solvents could have played a more important role in 66% of these cases
