Lentigines within nevus depigmentosus: a rare collateral effect of UVB therapy?

    No full text
Nevus depigmentosus is an uncommon hypopigmented macule or patch that is congenital and stable in its relative size and distribution throughout life; it occurs sporadically and may be localized, segmental or, less often, systematized. We report the case of a 17-year-old girl with a segmental achromic nevus of the left leg and a patch on the lower back with late age of onset who developed lentigines after prolonged intense ultraviolet B exposure as a consequence of an incorrect diagnosis of segmental vitiligo

A molecular-level plug/socket system: Electronic energy transfer from a binaphthyl unit incorporated into a crown ether to an anthracenyl unit linked to an ammonium ion

The reversible acid/base- (hydrogen-bonding-) controlled association between racemic crown ethers incorporating a binaphthyl unit (the socket) and wirelike compounds bearing an anthracenyl unit (the plug) is described. The compounds used were the (+/-)binaphthocrown ethers BN20C6, BN23C7, and BN26C8, the amines 9-methyl(aminomethyl)anthracene (AM) and 9-methyl(aminobenzyl)anthracene (AB), and their hexafluorophosphate salts AMH(+)PF(6)(-) and ABH(+)PF(6)(-). The experiments were carried out in CH,CI, solution. Fluorescence data, (1)H NMR spectra, and molecular modeling all point to the formation of stable, pseudorotaxane-type H-bonded adducts of BN23C7 with AMH(+) and of BN26C8 with AMH+ and ABH(+). These systems can be considered as molecular-level plug/socket devices since they are characterized by i) reversible, acid/base-controlled plug in/plug out behavior and ii) photoinduced flow of electronic energy from the binaphthyl to the anthracenyl unit in the plug in state. The above concepts can be easily extended to systems in which a) the plug in/plug out function is stereoselective and b) light excitation induces an electron flow instead of a flow of electronic energy

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the sexual function and quality of life (QoL) of naturally postmenopausal women affected by genitourinary syndrome of menopause who were treated with an ultralow-concentration estriol vaginal gel (0.005%). Methods: Postmenopausal women with vulvovaginal atrophy symptoms and sexual disorders were enrolled in a case-control study. Women were treated with vaginal gel (containing 50mg of estriol) daily for 3 weeks and then twice weekly up to 12 weeks. Determination of vaginal maturation index, evaluation of vaginal pH, and assessment of vaginal atrophy symptoms were carried out. QoL, sexual function, and distress were investigated using the Short Form 36, Female Sexual Function Index, and Female Sexual Distress Scale questionnaires. Changes between baseline and week 12 were assessed. Results: Sixty-eight women were included in the study group, and 42 women were included in the control group. Women on estriol vaginal gel had a significant increase in vaginal maturation index and improvement of vaginal pH compared with baseline (P<0.05). Mean total Female Sexual Function Index score improved, and Female Sexual Distress Scale score decreased from baseline to follow-up. Results from the Short Form 36 questionnaire showed a significant improvement in the overall index of somatic aspects (P<0.05). The control group showed no changes from baseline evaluation (P=NS). Conclusions: Estriol vaginal gel (0.005%) therapy significantly improves the trophism of the vaginal mucosa and the sexual health and QoL of naturally postmenopausal women. These results confirm that low doses of vaginal estrogen must be considered as the first choice for the initial treatment of postmenopausal genitourinary symptoms

This study compared dexmedetomidine or xylazine in combination with tiletamine-zolazepam for chemical immobilization of wild fallow deer (Dama dama) in a prospective, randomized, blinded clinical study. Forty fallow deer were divided into two groups: tiletamine-zolazepam-xylazine (TZX) and tiletamine-zolazepamdexmedetomidine (TZD). The TZX group was immobilized with 1.9 6 0.05 mg/kg of xylazine and 1.48 6 0.05 mg/kg of tiletamine-zolazepam, whereas the TZD group was immobilized with 34.15 6 1.1 lg/kg of dexmedetomidine and 0.97 6 0.03 mg/kg of tiletamine-zolazepam by dart. The induction time was recorded. During the immobilization, heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, hemoglobin oxygen saturation, blood lactate concentration, and quality of immobilization were recorded at 10, 20, and 30 m after drug administration. The time of achievement of sternal recumbency and that of standing were also recorded. The TZD group showed a significantly shorter induction time (8 6 1.6 m, TZX group; 4 6 0.5 m, TZD group), significantly higher quality of immobilization score (2[1–2], TZX group; 4[4–4], TZD group), and significantly lower lactate levels (5[3–7] mmol/ L, TZX group; 2[1–3] mmol/L, TZD group). The time to sternal recumbency was 7 6 1.6 m (TZX group) and 4 6 0.5 m (TZD group), and time to quadrupedal standing was 20 6 1.6 m (TZX group) and 16 6 0.8 m (TZD group) (P 1⁄4 0.001). Dexmedetomidine combined with tiletamine-zolazepam is a viable alternative to xylazine for the chemical immobilization of fallow deer

So close so different: what makes the difference?

The introduction of alien fish species in wetland ecosystems could have a great impact on freshwater communities and ecological processes. Despite fish introduction has been noticed as one of the principal cause of freshwater extinctions, ecosystem processes alteration, and change in aquatic community assemblage, very few data about impact on freshwater reptiles are available. As study model we used two neighbour sub-populations of the endangered Sicilian pond turtle, Emys trinacris, inhabiting two small, close each other and very similar lakes, except for the presence of allocthonous fish, Cyprinus carpio and Gambusia hoolbroki in one of the two. The multi-year study allowed highlighting significant differences in abundance, growth and reproductive output between the two freshwater turtle sub-populations, suggesting their influence on phenotypic plasticity of the studied population. These results are discussed in the light of previous evidence about the impact of these alien species on abundance and assemblage of the invertebrate community with an evident impact on niche width, diet composition and therefore energy intake by Emys trinacris. These data may provide important information to address management strategies and conservation actions of small wetland areas inhabited by pond turtles, pointing out a threats never highlighted up to now

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
