    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Características de plantas de soja associadas com alta produtividade em condição de elevada altitude

Para tanto, torna- se necessário conhecer as características das cultivares e suas interações com o ambiente de cultivo. Os objetivos deste estudo foram: identificar características morfofisiológicas correlacionados com o rendimento de grãos de soja e determinar a distância genética entre cultivares adaptadas e produtivas em ambiente de elevada altitude, na Região Sul do Brasil. Foram avaliadas 12 cultivares de soja, semeadas em 4 densidades, durante as safras 2011/2012 e 2012/2013. Os experimentos foram conduzidos na Fundação Agrária de Pesquisa Agropecuária - FAPA, localizada na latitude 25° 33' S, longitude 51° 29' W e com 1.100 metros de altitude, em Guarapuava, Paraná, Brasil. O delineamento experimental foi blocos ao acaso, com arranjo fatorial 12 x 4 sendo: 12 cultivares de soja e 4 densidades. As cultivares foram agrupadas de acordo com a adaptação por altitude, conforme informações obtidas junto aos respectivos obtentores. No primeiro grupo foram incluídas três cultivares registradas recentemente e atualmente, cultivadas em larga escala na região de elevada altitude no sul do Brasil (BMX Energia RR, BMX Apolo RR e BMX Ativa RR). No segundo, três cultivares com ampla indicação, tanto para a região de alta altitude quanto na de menor altitude no centro-sul do Brasil (BMX Turbo RR, V_Top RR e TMG 7262 RR). No terceiro grupo, duas cultivares que ocupam área significativa na região de menor altitude, desde o sul até o centro do País (BMX Potência RR e BRS 284). Finalmente, no quarto grupo, quatro cultivares que foram muito cultivadas em ambas as regiões até recentemente, porém atualmente ocupam área pouco expressiva (CD 202, BRS 232, BRS 243 RR e BRS 133) foram avaliadas. Plantas de soja com crescimento excessivo, folhas grandes e decumbentes, são mais suscetíveis ao acamamento, diminuem a distribuição da radiação, a fotossíntese líquida e a produção de fotoassimilados, no interior do dossel. Por outro lado, plantas mais compactas, com estatura reduzida, entrenós curtos, hastes e folhas eretas são mais tolerantes ao acamamento. A presença de folhas pequenas, principalmente na parte superior do dossel, permite maior penetração da radiação e dos produtos fitossanitários no interior do dossel, mantendo as folhas viáveis por mais tempo, aumentando a atividade fotossintética e formação de vagens e grãos em todas as partes da planta. O comportamento dos componentes do rendimento e o índice de colheita variam de acordo com os diferentes grupos de cultivares e com a densidade de plantas. Cultivares que toleram o aumento da densidade de plantas, produzem maior número de vagens por área comparado às demais, indicando que o aumento na densidade pode ser uma estratégia para elevar a produtividade de soja, dependendo, das características de cada cultivar. A resposta da soja ao aumento da densidade de plantas varia entre os grupos de cultivares. As cultivares com menor estatura de planta, IAF entre 4,5 e 6,7, com folhas pequenas e eretas, principalmente na parte superior do dossel, apresentam maior tolerância ao acamamento. Estas cultivares respondem positivamente ao aumento da densidade, até valores próximos a 500 mil plantas ha-1, tanto em crescimento como em acúmulo de biomassa e rendimento de grãos. Por outro lado, cultivares com elevada estatura e folhas grandes na parte superior do dossel, apresentam IAF e auto sombreamento excessivos, estiolamento e acamamento das plantas, resultando em menor fotossíntese líquida e afetando negativamente os componentes do rendimento, índice de colheita e rendimento de grãos. A distância genética entre cultivares com características favoráveis à adaptação no ambiente de elevada altitude no sul do Brasil é relativamente ampla. Palavras-chave: Glycine max. (L.) Merrill, cultivares, ambiente, morfologia, fisiologia, produtividade.Abstract: Increasing soybean productivity requires, among other factors, the selection of adapted cultivars to specific environment conditions. Therefore, it becomes necessary to know the cultivar characteristics according to their interactions with the environment. The objectives of this study were to identify morphological and physiological characteristics correlated with the yield of soybean and determine the genetic distance between adapted and productive cultivars in high altitude environment, in Southern Brazil. We evaluated 12 soybean cultivars, seeded with 4 plant densities, during the years 2011/2012 and 2012/2013. The experiments were carried out at the "Fundação Agraria de Pesquisa Agropecuária FAPA", located at latitude 25° 33 'S, longitude 51° 29' W and 1,100 meters of altitude, in Guarapuava, Parana, Brazil. The cultivars were grouped according to the altitude adaptation, according to the breeders information. The first group included three cultivars that have recently registered and which has been grown on large scale in high altitude regions of Southern Brazil (BMX Energia RR, BMX Apolo RR and BMX Ativa RR). The second, three cultivars with broad indication for both high and lower altitude regions in Central Southern Brazil (BMX Turbo RR, V_Top RR and TMG 7262 RR). In the third group, two cultivars wich occupy significant area in the lower altitude region, from the South to the center of the country (BMX Potência RR and BRS 284). Finally, in the fourth group, four cultivars which were largely cultivated until recently, but with lower cultivation area in the last years were evaluated (CD 202, BRS 232, BRS 243 RR and BRS 133). Soybean plants with excessive growth, large leaves and decumbent, are more susceptible to lodging, reduce the radiation distribution, net photosynthesis and plant assimilation within the canopy. On the other hand, more compact plants, with reduced height, short internodes, stems and erect leaves usually show lodging tolerance. Small leaves, especially on top of the canopy, allow greater radiation and pesticides penetration inside the canopy, keeping the leaves functional, improving to the photosynthetic activity and the pods and grain formation, in all parts of the plant. The yield components and harvest index vary according to the different groups of cultivars and plant density. Cultivars which tolerate increased plant density, produce the largest number of pods per area, indicating that the increase in density would be a strategy to consider to increase soybean yield, according to the cultivar characteristics. The soybean response to increased plant density varies between cultivars groups. Cultivars with lower plant height, LAI between 4.5 and 6.7, andwith small and erect leaves, especially in the upper canopy present high lodging tolerance. These cultivars respond positively to increased density until 500 000 plants ha-1 for growth, dry matter accumulation and grain yield. On the other hand, cultivars with high height and big leaves on top of the canopy, present high LAI and shading, etiolation and plant lodging, resulting in lower net photosynthesis and negatively affecting the yield components, harvest index and grain yield. The genetic distance between cultivars with high altitude adaptation in Southern Brazil conditions is relatively wide. Keywords: Glycine max. (L.)     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
