Nurturing Soft Skills in Engineering Education With Interactive Activities
Arabaci Atlamaz, Tuba/0000-0002-6332-7727; Cihan Aydogdu, Ceyda/0000-0002-5487-7444; Soylu, Sebnem/0000-0002-8662-103X;In today's job market, soft skills are increasingly crucial, surpassing technical knowledge. Traditional lectures fall short in teaching these skills, prompting universities to explore new methods of instruction. A Turkish public university introduced a curriculum with non-disciplinary courses called Personal Development Pathway (PDP) courses for its Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) department. These courses aim to enhance soft skills, motivate students, foster positive relationships, and improve employability. Employing Positive Education approach, the PDP courses include hands-on learning, one-onone meetings, exercises, interactions with professionals, and self-reflection. This study evaluates four PDP courses that are offered for first-, second-, and third-year EEE students. It explores how these courses, designed similarly but offered in different semesters, enhanced EEE students' soft skills and their understanding of course concepts. A questionnaire was administered to sixty-one students after four semesters of teaching. Data triangulation utilized journals, interviews, and reflections. Data showed increased motivation, improved interpersonal skills, and enhanced confidence in self-expression among students. Despite the collaborative effort and time required from instructors, these courses seem to provide valuable opportunities for students to enhance their competence and success in future careers.Acknowledgement We are thankful for faculty members in the AGU EEE department for their collaboration in teaching the courses
GENDER INEQUALITY IN TURKISH EDUCATION SYSTEM AND THE CAUSES
Education is a crucial factor for nations to advance their social, cultural and economic well being. Gender equality in education is in direct proportion to gender equality in the labor force, in equal power in household and decision making. Educating females lower mother and baby mortality rates, generates higher educational attainment and achievement for next generations, and improves economic conditions of nations. Gender inequality in educational attainment and dropout rates is an agelong problem for Turkey since it was established in 1923. Girls are still have lower enrollment rates and higher drop out rates than their male counterparts in Turkey, even though education is free at all levels, there is a compulsory education law, financial aid is provided by government for parents to send their daughters to school, and there are boarding schools and free school services for girls living in rural areas. This thesis reviews a diverse literature on female education and the barriers to female education in the Turkish education system. In this thesis the background of the Turkish education system and the place of female education in that system are explored and the main barriers to female education in Turkey are analyzed through a review of the literature on gender gap, female education, and education policies. Some social and political strategies are suggested for Turkish policy makers, teacher educators, social workers, and teachers in order to promote female education and gender equity in the Turkish education system.Urban Educatio
The brexit negotiations: The next battleground for French-U.K. relations
In March 2017, following the successful referendum in the UK to leave the European Union in June of 2016, negotiations began to discuss the policies regarding the official exit of the United Kingdom with Theresa May’s declaration of Article 50. In recent developments associated with the Brexit negotiations, more ties have been seen between the UK and France than other member-states of the EU. Given the long history between France and the UK, it is clear that the Brexit negotiations have become the next battleground for UK-French unrest. This essay responds to the strength of the theory of intergovernmentalism within the context of the Brexit negotiations and how the leadership role established by France in the wake of Brexit is a phenomenon based on their economic interests, a desire to advance their position as an international actor, and their deep-rooted, historical discontent for one another. Through analyzing a series of most-read newspapers from both countries, the research has shown the battleground of French-UK relations as taking place in these three categories with national interests being more pertinent in the Brexit negotiations than international relations.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2020-05-01The student, Emilee McArdle, accepted the attached license on 2018-04-19 at 11:28.The student, Emilee McArdle, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2018-04-19 at 13:20.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2018-04-19 at 15:24.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #12377 on 2018-08-31 at 17:21:02Made available in DSpace on 2018-09-04T20:36:48Z (GMT). Toward a Deleuzean theory of translation: a translation of and commentary on A fuego eterno condenados
This translation and commentary thesis presents a theory of literary translation
based on the ideas of Gilles Deleuze, informed by and applied to a translation
of parts 0, 1 and 2 of the novel A fuego eterno condenados (1994) by Chilean author
Roberto Rivera Vicencio. Using an approach based on the iterative development
of a theoretical framework and translation, it examines how specific translation
problems from the text can contribute to and benefit from a translation theory
based on the ideas of Deleuze. Analysing the work of Lawrence Venuti as
indicative of a shift by Translation Studies from thinking of translation in terms
of equivalence to thinking of it in terms of difference, the thesis builds on
Venuti’s research, offering a systematic treatment of Deleuze’s earlier work
to theorise translation as the production of simulacra in which the translator
creates solutions in the domain of the Actual to a translation problem that exists
in the Virtual. It then goes on to examine Deleuze’s later work, written in
collaboration with F´elix Guattari, to develop a conceptual framework based on
the concept of the texture of prose derived from the principles of a minor, or
nomad, science. This framework is used to address specific problems arising
in the translation, deriving a series of practical techniques and considerations
that can be used to create this kind of texture in the application of a Deleuzean
theory of translation to literary texts

The effect of UNHCR operations in the development of Turkey's asylum framework
Turkey is increasingly occupying an important position within the world and more so within migration studies because of its triple role, as a sending, receiving, and transit country. This text addresses Turkey’s changing position within world orders in regards to migration and asylum concerns and how UNHCR operations have affected Turkey’s development of its asylum framework. Due to Turkey’s geographical location at the heart of major migratory networks, it continues to strictly observe the 1951 Geneva Convention through the lens of its Geographical Limitation. This limitation is central to Turkey’s current asylum system with the separation of Europeans from non-Europeans ensuing in the application of differential treatment by which only Europeans are eligible for the granting of full fledged refugee status. One of Turkey’s most recent milestones is its successful completion of the draft process for its first ever law on asylum - The Law on Foreigners and International Protection, a significant portion of Turkey’ s quest of reforming its asylum framework through policy. Both the EU and UNHCR were able to exert their influence on Turkish officials throughout the draft law process. Their influential impact will be addressed through the phenomena of UNHCR-ization and Europeanization respectively. The EU’s power significantly stems from EU-Turkey accession negotiations while UNHCR has become influential because of its identity as the mandated UN agency for the international protection of asylum seekers and refugees. The position UNHCR occupies in Turkey is valuable in assessing the influence an international organization can have on the development of a nation’s national policy and the potential power gain, whether intentional or unintentional, in carrying out the respective policy. UNHCR’s influence within Turkey’s asylum system is observable in the organization’s increasing operations. These operations include the processing of asylum claims, determining refugee status, and resettling refugees out of Turkey. The EU is an important actor for Turkey’s asylum reform process, but they are not the only actor enacting change and they might not even be the most influential actor. The Turkey-UNHCR relationship, especially in regards to providing services of international protection to asylum seekers and refugees is worth further analysis.Item withdrawn by Mark Zulauf ([email protected]) on 2013-04-23T22:03:38Z

Non-fungible Tokens (NFT), Virtual Real Estate and Digital Assets, Cultural and Artistic Works
Working mainly on the Ethereum blockchain, Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) are, in their simplest form, digital certificates with unique code and metadata belonging to digital assets. NFTs can be used, traded, gained, or lost in value. Most audiovisual artifacts such as images, sounds, games, videos, digital artworks, and even digital posts (for example, tweets) can be NFT. NFT is not a currency like cryptocurrencies, as the name suggests, they are non-fungible. Any currency (for example, dollar or bitcoin) is the same everywhere in the world (Bitcoin which is belonged to a Bitcoin owner in Turkey, and Bitcoin which is belonged to a Bitcoin owner in America are the same). However, NFTs are digital representations of the asset they represent and are unique. It is often discussed whether NFT is a temporary trend or a new technology that will revolutionize art, culture, and intellectual property rights. Along with these discussions, it is a fact that the NFT market has grown exponentially. NFTs improve the marketing processes of cultural and artistic works, make them more accessible, may eliminate intermediaries, and facilitate traceability. In this study, the development, features, and ecosystem of NFTs, which are becoming popular day by day and an important element of Web 3.0, are examined in detail and tried to provide the reader with a holistic and objective perspective on NFTs. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2023
An Example for the Construction of Masculinity in Turkey: The Woman Has No Name
In Turkey, the academic works on gender rather focus on Women’s Studies, whilst Masculinity Studies are perceived as a relatively new research field. From this perspective, the aim of this work is to look closely at the social construction of masculinity in Turkey through the feminist author Duygu Asena’s book entitled Kadının adı yok (The woman has no name). This book hit the bookstores in 1987 and had a selling record in Turkey with its forty editions within year. Duygu Asena rather depicts her male characters from a critical perspective. According to her, in the social construction of masculinity in Turkey we see that men use psychological, physical and sexual violence against women. Men criticize women, limit their liberties, beat them at times, have physical intercourse with them without necessarily asking for their consent. Even though in Turkey masculinity is actually getting modernized and we see non-traditional forms of masculinity around, we notice that hegemonic masculinity is getting reproduced in homosocial communities. We can argue that men encounter insecurity in the midst of the modernization process and suffer from the oppression related to the “male roles”. We recommend that there ought to be more contributions on Masculinity Studies in Turkey
Use of deterministic and probabilistic slope stability analyses to evaluate tunnel location in landslide-prone areas
Includes bibliographical references.2022 Summer. The inherent complexity of subsurface characterization in mountainous terrains typically results in extensive analyses to optimize tunnel alignments based on parameters such as rock quality, support systems, and groundwater flow. However, limited investigations are performed to determine the influence of slope stability on the selection of tunnel location for alignments relatively parallel to the slope face. One of the major limitations of these investigations relies on the rapidly changing geometry of mountainous environments, which significantly increases the computational cost required to model detailed three-dimensional slopes. As such, slope stability analyses are often idealized using two-dimensional simulations. In this research, a case study of the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel (EJMT) in Colorado is incorporated to determine the minimum distance between a dual-bore tunnel and the face of the slope at which slope stability is virtually unaltered, using two-dimensional numerical simulations. The results from a deterministic and probabilistic analysis of approximately 600 simulations suggest that slope stability increases as tunnel bores are translated to areas of increasing overburden. Specifically, tunnel-slope interaction was minimized past a horizontal distance of 5.5 times the diameter of the tunnels into the slope. Complementary analyses associated with the EJMT tunnel construction, including access roads and a three-dimensional analysis of a tunnel alignment relatively perpendicular to the slope face, are included in this document. The author believes this research provides a general trend that could be applied to other projects with geomechanical properties and slope geometry within the ranges used in this study
