Student teachers views on the nature of science: do they change during a one year pre-service programme?
The nature of science (NOS) remains a central issue of pre-service teacher education. We considered the student teacher as a scientist, their background from undergraduate, previous postgraduate and life experiences as well as monitoring changes in their responses to a short questionnaire derived from McComas et al (1998). The study aimed to map the students' understanding of (NoS) with a view to developing their pedagogical content knowledge as well as establishing baseline data to measure the effect of future interventions during the pre-service programmes (such as teaching about NoS or the Philosophy of Science) It is also anticipated that we will be well placed to promote ACfE aspirations as well as informing our programme in relation to developing Responsible Citizens and Effective Contributors who can contribute meaningfully to debates about controversial scientific issues

The role of endothelin-1 in pressure autoregulation of cerebral blood flow in rats.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of the endothelin system in pressure autoregulation of cerebral blood flow (CBF) in rats. DESIGN: We tested pressure autoregulation by increasing cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP; mean arterial pressure-intracranial pressure) with norepinephrine (0.08 microgram.kg-1.min-1 for 30 min) twice in ten anesthetized normocapnic rats. The first test was performed without (control test) and the second test after administration of the combined endothelin ETA/B receptor antagonist, bosentan, i.v. (30 mg/kg; drug test). CBF was measured by the hydrogen clearance technique. RESULTS: During the control test, norepinephrine infusion increased CPP by 21 +/- 2 (23 +/- 2%) mmHg (mean +/- SEM; p < 0.001) and CBF by 3.6 +/- 3.1 (6 +/- 8%) ml/100 g/min (p = 0.5, Fig. 1); during the drug test, norepinephrine infusion increased CPP by 18 +/- 1 (20 +/- 2%) mmHg (p < 0.001) and CBF by 15.8 +/- 4.1 (46 +/- 13%) ml/100 g/min (p = 0.004). Mean arterial pressure was not affected by bosentan infusion (p = 0.2). PaCO2 levels were stable during the tests (40.2 +/- 1.4 mmHg). CONCLUSIONS: The endothelin system is involved in cerebral pressure autoregulation in a rodent model in vivo. The role of this system under pathophysiologic conditions such as subarachnoid hemorrhage, where basal vascular tone and its regulation may be altered, remains to be defined

The Judicial Behavior of Justice Souter in Criminal Cases and the Denial of a Conservative Counterrevolution
[Excerpt] “The following article documents the judicial career of Justice David Souter from his time served as an attorney general and state judge in New Hampshire until his recent tenure on the U.S. Supreme Court. Based upon his written opinions and individual votes, Justice Souter clearly has evolved into a more liberal jurist than ideological conservatives would have preferred in the area of criminal justice. Over the course of his judicial career, Justice Souter has gained respect as an intellectual scholar by attempting to completely understand both sides of a dispute and applying precedent and legal rules in a flexible—albeit technical—manner in the hope of achieving justice. However, Justice Souter may be remembered most as the justice who disappointed ideological conservatives by failing to complete a conservative counterrevolution that had begun with President Richard Nixon‘s first appointment to the Court in 1969.
Souter-Strathclyde total elbow arthroplasty
We have reviewed 66 consecutive Souter-Strathclyde arthroplasties of the elbow implanted in 59 patients between 1982 and 1993. Thirteen patients (15 elbows) (19.6%) died. Sixteen elbows (24.2%) were revised, six for aseptic loosening (9%), four (6%) because of fracture or loosening after a fracture, three (4.5%) for infection and three (4.5%) for dislocation. Four patients refused to attend for review. In 33 elbows with a follow-up of 93 months (60 to 167) complete relief of pain was achieved in 22 (67%) when seen at one year. After ten years or more 36% of the elbows were painfree and 64% had occasional slight pain especially under loading or stress. The mean gain in the arc of movement was 16°, but a mean flexion contracture of 33° remained. The main early complications were intraoperative fractures of the epicondyles (9%), postoperative dislocation (4.5%) and ulnar neuropathy. The incidence of ulnar neuropathy before operation was 19%. After operation 20 patients (33%) had an ulnar neuropathy, in seven of which it had been present before operation, and of these weakness of the hypothenar muscle occurred in two. The probability of survival of the Souter-Strathclyde elbow prosthesis based on the Kaplan-Meier calculation is 69% at ten years. </jats:p

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
