Popular Tropes of Identity in Contemporary Russian Television and Film
No full textThis book is an exploration of the changes in Russian cultural identity in the twenty years after the fall of the Soviet state. Through close readings of a select number of contemporary Russian films and television series, Irina Souch investigates how a variety of popular cultural tropes ranging from the patriarchal family to the country idyll survived the demise of Communism and maintained their power to inform the Russian people's self-image. She shows how these tropes continue to define attitudes towards political authority, economic disparity, ethnic and cultural difference, generational relations and gender. The author also introduces theories of identity developed in Russia at the same time, enabling these works to act as sites of productive dialogue with the more familiar discourses of Western scholarship
To the 100th anniversary of Irina Antonova
No full textThis article is dedicated to the legendary Russian museum figure Irina Antonova (20.03.1922 —
30.11.2020), who worked at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts for 75 years, 52 years of
which as its director. The development of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts under the
leadership of Irina Antonova is seen by the author of this article as part of the evolution of
museum work in the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation. The article emphasizes that the Pushkin Museum was often ahead of its time, laying the groundwork for major changes. For
example, with the opening of the Museum of Private Collections as part of the State Museum
of Fine Arts, the rehabilitation of private collecting in the country took place. The December
Nights festival created by Irina Antonova in collaboration with the brilliant pianist Svyatoslav
Richter in 1981 became a matrix of art festivals that took place in various museums of the
country during the following decades. The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts was charged
with promoting Western art in the USSR, of which it brilliantly took the advantage when
started displaying works by Picasso, Matisse, Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, masterpieces
of drawing from the Albertina Museum in Vienna, Western European and American paintings
from American museums and others famous exhibitions. This is the visible part of Irina
Antonova’s dynamic activity. She approached academic work no less thoroughly, as well as the
organization of study and cataloguing of the collection of the State Museum of Fine Arts. And,
of course, much credit must go to Irina Antonova for preparing the program for the development
and reconstruction of the Pushkin Museum, which has been repeatedly revised and is
being finalized before our very eyes under the direction of Marina Loshak

A heterotopia, in Michel Foucault's initial formulations, describes the spatial articulation of a discursive order, manifesting its own distinct logics and categories in ways that refract or disturb prevailing paradigms. While in the twenty-first century the concept of globalisation is frequently seen as a tumultuous undifferentiation of cultures and spaces, this volume breaks new ground by interrogating how heterotopia and globalisation in fact intersect in the cultural present. Bringing together contributors from disciplines including Geography, Literary Studies, Architecture, Sociology, Film Studies, and Philosophy, this volume sets out a new typology for heterotopian spaces in the globalising present. Together, the chapters argue that digital technologies, climate change, migration, and other globalising phenomena are giving rise to a heterotopian multiplicity of discursive spaces, which overlap and clash with one another in contemporary culture.

Notes on Sincerity in Russian Auteur Cinema of the 2010s
Get PDFThe notion of sincerity is well-established in Western film theory to describe a certain style of filmmaking, but in Russia this tendency has only recently become manifest. The point of departure of this essay is to examine the discursive uses of the concept of sincerity in regard to films by three young Russian directors: Oksana Bychkova’s Eshche odin god / Another Year (2014), Nigina Saifullaeva’s Kak menia zovut / Name Me (2014), and Natalia Meshchaninova’s Kombinat “Nadezhda”/ The Hope Factory. Although grouped together with the so-called new wave of auteur cinema (“novaia rezhisserskaia volna”), these directors’ position vis-à-vis their predecessors as well as contemporaries both in Russia and the West defies easy classification. The analysis undertaken here offers insights into how the filmmakers go about expressing their generation’s social and emotional preoccupations honestly and realistically. The analysis also underscores the differently shared stylistic, narrative, and thematic elements they deploy throughout the films. Sincerity in this sense can be said to return not only as a discursive phenomenon but also as a variable performative cultural practice. The different ways each film strives to provoke an affective response in viewers justify classifying such aesthetic tactics as sincere

<p><strong>Background</strong><br />
The aim of research is retrospective studying of the frequency and structure of affect by malignant neoplasms of the maxillofacial area in one of the industrial district of Kharkov.<br />
<strong>Methods</strong><br />
The results of retrospective studying of the frequency and structure of affect by<br />
malignant neoplasms in the maxillofacial area in one of the industrial districts of<br />
Kharkiv are described in the article. The retrospective analysis was carried out taking into account the age, sex, localization and disease stages.<br />
<strong>Results</strong><br />
According to the results of the performed research it was established that the incidence during 10 years tended to growth, predominantly with the aged and senile people. The high percentage of the initially revealed patients with the advanced stages of disease was defined.<br />
<strong>Conclusions</strong><br />
Performing the retrospective analysis of the frequency and structure of malignant<br />
neoplasms of the maxillofacial area among the population of the industrial district of Kharkov, it should be stated that over the last decade the incidence trended upwards.<br />
Analysis of the frequency of detection of certain stages of the disease indicated that primary revealed advanced forms of cancer patients.<br />
The obtained data can be evaluated as the consequence of insufficient efficiency of preventive examinations and late address of patients.</p>oral cance

Get PDF“Troubling the Water: Hydro-imaginaries in Nordic Television Drama” discusses a selection of Nordic television series to consider how they employ Anthropocenic imagery to challenge the Nordic governments’ long-established attitude as sustainable and environment-friendly. Despite their different genres and aesthetic qualities these series share their concerns about the availability of clean water usually perceived as everlasting given the Nordic countries’ physical geographical features. The close reading of relevant fragments from various series allows to interrogate such uncritical understanding of water as a “passive” commodity to serve modern societies anthropogenic wants, rather than eco-social needs. The article particularly focuses on the last season of the Danish family drama The Legacy which explicitly engages with water as being central to issues of social justice as much as issues of environmental concern
