The trophic state of small Pampean lakes, its relationship with hydrology and land use intensity
The trophic state of the Pampean shallow lakes is influenced by the soil fertility and the hydrometeorological conditions as well as by the human activities. The climate of the Pampean region alternates between relatively large periods of drought and flood. In areas where agriculture is intensive, nutrient from excesses in the use of fertilizers can affect the trophic state of lakes. From December 1999 to April 2002, seven small shallow lakes located in the NW of the Buenos Aires province were studied. Changes in the lake depth, water conductivity, nutrients concentrations and chlorophyll a were analyzed. Precipitation was intense during both 2000 and 2001 years. During the first year, the precipitation diluted the high phosphorus concentrations in all the lakes. Despite high precipitation during 2001, the lakes increased their concentrations of phosphorus. These contrasting results could be explained by the different trophic states of the lakes at the beginning of the autumnal precipitation. During the summer season, the lakes generally were under a negative water balance and their nutrients concentrations and algal biomass were high. Nevertheless, the hydrological variability and the agriculture use would alter the physical, chemical and biological parameters of the small Pampean shallow lakes.Fil: Sosnovsky, Alejandro. Factors that determinte zooplankton structure in small water bodies of the pampean region
Research was developed in seven small shallow lakes (lagunas) of the Pampean region. These shallow lakes were divided into two different groups according to land use intensity in their respective drainage basins. Within the group located in areas characterized by lower land use intensity the shallow lakes were further subdivided into two subgroups, one with shallow lakes dominated by macrophyte and the other one with shallow lakes dominated by phytoplankton. All shallow lakes were studied for a two-year period. Samples were taken of their physical and chemical characteristics and biotic communities, focusing on the zooplankton community. Research was carried out in three stages. During the first two stages whole-lake studies were made. In the first stage the absence of fish in the plankton community dynamics was studied and in the second one a study was made of the effect of a planktivorous fish (Odontesthes bonariensis) on the plankton community. With the purpose of evaluating the possible top-down control of a piscivorous fish on Odontesthes bonariensis, one of the shallow lakes was later on stocked with Hoplias malabaricus. The third stage involved the study of the plankton community once the natural fish community had been reestablished soon after the corresponding fish manipulation had been carried out. Extreme variability in the physical, chemical and biological parameters of the shallow lakes under study was observed within each of the shallow lakes, and also among the different shallow lake groups and sub-groups. The variability was attributed to season cycles, to periods of drought and flood characteristic of the Pampean region and to the different land use intensity in the drainage basins. All these factors would have an impact on the water bodies in the whole area, but such an impact would be stronger on small-surface water bodies. Within this complex temporary and spatial dynamics whole-lake studies were carried out. Low fish stock could have favored the development of plankton cladocerans. Abundance of Daphnia was high in phytoplankton dominated lakes. Even so, these big cladocerans did not last long. Possibly, the 0+ fish and the competition for the resource may have caused its disappearance. On the other hand, Daphnia was virtually absent in shallow lakes dominated by macrophyte. Its absence may be attributed to a varied invertebrate predator fauna. Therefore, zooplankton predation should be very intense in the small Pampean shallow lakes extensively colonized by macrophyte. In the shallow lakes dominated by phytoplankton, low fish stock is shown by intense zooplankton grazing on phytoplankton. The introduction of Odontesthes bonariensis caused an immediate cascade effect on the zooplankton, predating chiefly on bigger sized organisms. Fish predation on zooplankton is not steady throughout the year, the highest intensity occurring during the Summer season and the lowest in the cold seasons. Even so, during the coldest seasons, trophic interaction should be essential in determining biomass and zooplankton structure.Fil: Sosnovsky, Alejandro. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Relationships between fish species abundances and water transparency in hypertrophic turbid waters of temperate shallow lakes
We explored the relationships between Secchi disc depth and the abundance of fish species in very shallow, hypertrophic, turbid waters of Pampa Plain lakes, Argentine. We tested whether the abundance of any of the species present was associated with water transparency for lakes where water transparency, as measured by Secchi disc depth, ranged from 0.1 to 0.4 m. Overall, the abundance of five species (Cnesterodon decemmaculatus, Jenynsia multidentata, Corydoras paleatus, Pimelodella laticeps and Odontesthes bonariensis) seemed to be affected by this narrow gradient in water transparency. These findings represent an interesting result for turbid hypertrophic environments where narrow ranges in water transparency are traditionally neglected as important factors for fishes. We show, however, how water transparency patterns may be still important for some species in highly turbid waters with extremely narrow gradients in Secchi disc depth.Fil: Rosso, Juan Jose. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
