Oedipus philosopher, innocent responsible
In his two Oedipian tragedies (Oedipus Tyrannus and Oedipus Colonneus) Sophocles presents a complex portrait of human and political condition where we can think responsibility, will and guilt in their legal, philosophical and religious meanings. It proposes a genealogical methodology for the interpretation of literary tropes of pollution, a critical reading of representations of pollution across a set of key literary texts, and the creative realisation of what will be defined as a “compost aesthetic” in a full-length volume of poetry by the author, blue grass. “Pollution” is described as a substance or category in which nature and culture are ineluctably synthesised, an exemplar of nature-culture hypotheses common in contemporary ecological, sociological and philosophical discourse (Chapter 1). Historical, anthropological and philosophical methodologies for analysing tropes of pollution are examined in the work of Robert Parker, Mary Douglas and Julia Kristeva (Chapter 2). Rhetorics of pollution are then studied in three primary sources—the Theban plays of the classical Greek author Sophocles (Chapter 3), Daniel Defoe’s early-modern A Journal of the Plague Year (Chapter 3), and Walt Whitman’s modern poem “This Compost” (Chapter 4)—each of which, it is argued, is representative of a discrete economy of waste: respectively the sacred, the secular and the scientific. These economies are aligned with a set of corresponding rhetorical functions—catharsis and purification, quarantine, synthesis and composting—the description of which furnishes ecopoetic theory with a genealogical methodology for the critical analysis of literary tropes of pollution and their aesthetic and ethical characteristics. As a contribution to contemporary ecocritical and ecopoetic discourse, this thesis proposes that a critical reading of the aesthetic function of tropes of pollution offers innovative conceptual frameworks for imagining ethically responsible modes of the human habitation of natural ecosystems. It argues against rhetorical economies of catharsis and quarantine, and critiques contemporary ecopoetic writing and theory that hinges upon the rhetorical demarcation of pollution from representations of purified nature and transcendent aesthetic subjectivity. It proposes instead an ethically motivated and materially situated “compost aesthetic” in which waste is troped as a synthetic category susceptible to theories of re-assimilation, recycling and regeneration. The thesis concludes with a study of the recent literary and theoretical emergence of a “compost aesthetic”, its application in innovative literary and poetic practices such as quotation and sampling, and the demonstration of them in a close reading of poems (Chapter 5) from the author’s recent volume blue grass (Chapter 6)
The rite and the divine: natural Law, the feminine, and customs in the tragedies of Sophocles - (441 b.c.e.)
A metodologia utilizada é a análise do discurso crítico, ADC.The text of this master's thesis aims to address the relevance of the discourse instilled in the tragedy of Antigone, a work by the Greek author Sophocles, in which the character, opposing an authoritarian order from King Creon, goes through a journey of struggle and subversion , to be able to exercise her natural right to give funeral honors to her dead brother, even if it costs her her life, since she is inserted in a society allegedly based on patriarchy. It is worth noting that it is possible to deconstruct the common idea that there was homogeneity among women, making the differentiation between the groups clear, as well as the fixed idea of an absolute superiority of men to the detriment of women, since the tragedy of Antigone itself demonstrates that this idea was questioned. In this way, an analysis was made of the emergence and popularization of Greek tragic contests, the stage on which such tragedies were presented, in the context of celebrations and worship of the god Dionysus. Subsequently, the focus is on ritual, specifically the funeral rite portrayed in the tragedies and its importance for the Greeks of this period, as well as the figure of the feminine in Sophoclean work will be analyzed to survey the perspective given to women. To support the presentation, works by important Greek authors, such as Euripides and Homer, will be used to be a source of tangential analysis serve as a source of analysis of how the female social role and the funeral rite occurred in different Greek periods. The methodology used for this research is bibliographical study based on literary analysis in search of problematization of the theme. It appears that a review of the historiography related to the issues surrounding the social role of women in Classical Greece is necessary, which is always focused on the male side of the phenomena. This perspective is unusual in the approach of Brazilian historiography in relation to Antiquity, presenting the situation of this project as a necessary new freshness. The methodology used is critical discourse analysis, ADC.Pró-Reitoria de Pós-Graduação (PROPG UNESP)
