스팀업(Stim UP)매트 걷기운동 프로그램이 허약노인의 균형능력과 보행기능 및 관절 가동범위에 미치는 효과
This study was performed to evaluate effects of a stim-up matt walking exercise program on balance and gait of the frail elderly. Methods: A total of 37 elderly people recruited from S city were randomly assigned to the experimental group (n=22) and control group (n=15). The stim-up matt walking exercise program was offered twice a week for 8 weeks. Data were analyzed by SPSS 21.0. Results: The dynamic balance ability Timed Up and Go test of the experimental group was significantly faster than that of the control group (t=21.72, p < .001). The static balance ability open-eye standing test (t=44.15, p < .001) and close-eye standing test (t=9.01, p=.005) also showed increase in effects of the experimental group. In the walking ability, gait cycle (t=2.48, p=.018), cadence (t=-2.21, p=.034) and gait speed (t=-2.78, p=.009), positive effects were on. However, no statistically significant differences were found in stride length and double support. At the ankle joint range left ankle plantar flexion (t=3.92, p < .001) and left ankle dorsal flexion (t=4.51, p < .001) were higher in the experimental group than in the control group, and also right ankle plantar flexion (t=2.79, p=.008) and right ankle dorsal flexion (t=2.92, p=.006) increased in the experimental group. Conclusion: The significance of this study is that the stim-up matt walking exercise program for the frail elderly proves to be useful for improving balance and walking
Effects of a nurse-led multicomponent intervention for frail older adults living alone in a community: a quasi-experimental study
BACKGROUND: Given the rapid aging of the population in Korea, efforts to slow down or prevent frailty, to support the health of older adults, should be an important public health priority. This may allow them to continue living within the community by keeping their functional independence for as long as possible. This study aimed to evaluate the nurse-led multicomponent intervention for community-dwelling pre-frail or frail elderly on physical and psychosocial outcomes. METHOD: A non-equivalent control pre-, post-, and follow-up test design was used with a sample of 126 prefrail or frail older adults (62 in the experimental and 64 in the control group). The 12-week multicomponent intervention for the experimental group comprised physical exercise, cognitive training, and nutrition and disease management education. Outcome variables (Timed Up and Go Test results and measures of frailty, handgrip strength, depression, social activity, and social support) were measured both pre- and post-intervention, and after the 12-week follow-up period. RESULTS: For each group, we assessed the significant interaction of time with frailty, depression, social activity, and social support, as well as Timed Up and Go Test results. In the experimental group, levels of depression decreased while levels of social support and social activity increased from each measurement period to the next, within the 12-month study period; those in the control group were relatively stable over time. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that nurse-led multicomponent intervention was effective for improving physical and psychosocial function of the (pre)frail older adults living alone in Korea, suggesting that older adults can take proactive roles in conducting their daily life and managing their health. A strategy for disseminating widely sustainable nurse-led multicomponent interventions should be developed for community-dwelling frail elderly who live alone

Neural correlates of eye blinking; improved by simultaneous fMRI and EOG measurement
Neural correlates of eye blink in healthy human subjects can be investigated using functional magnetic resonance imaging. However, the focus of most previous studies has been on intentional eye blinking. The goal of the present study was to examine the neural correlates of spontaneous eye blinking with the help of EOG measurements during data acquisition of fMRI. After the removal of the pulse artifact in the EOG signal, EOG waveform clearly indicates eye blinking, which was equivalent to those measured outside of the MRI scanner. On the basis of this detection, each blinking event can be used as a temporal cue for the event-related fMRI. In a comparison, we also investigated the neural correlates of blink inhibition. Based on the brain activation pattern, the activation of the bilateral parahippocampal, the visual cortex was commonly observed for both conditions. The additional activation of the precentral gyrus, corresponding to blink inhibition, and the right medial frontal gyrus, corresponding to spontaneous blinking were observed. Based on these results, we conclude that the medial frontal gyrus is responsible for spontaneous eye blinking, whereas precentral activation appears to be related to blink inhibition. An fMRI study of Chinese character reading and picture naming by native Korean speakers
Chinese characters appear in the currently used Korean language, and the system used for writing system the Korean language consists of a mixture of the Korean alphabet and Chinese characters. In the present study, neural mechanisms involved in reading a single Chinese character words and naming pictures by Korean native speakers were investigated using a functional magnetic resonance imaging technique. The findings show a right hemispheric dominance within the occipito-temporal and the left middle/medial frontal area for both reading Chinese characters and naming pictures. This should reflect the specific visual processing of reading Chinese characters. Additional activations in inferior frontal and cingulage gyrus were also observed. The activations of inferior parietal region and thalamus are of interest, since we assume that these activations are strongly related to the phonological status of single Chinese character words rather than two character words that are typically used by Korean native speakers. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Analysis of functional MRI data based on an estimation of the hemodynamic response in the human brain
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data is usually analyzed using hemodynamic response data formulated with the aid of a gamma function. An fMRI response to stimuli can be mathematically modeled by convolution of the hemodynamic response and the presented stimulus. This approach is based on a linear system analysis. However, it is known that most biological systems are nonlinear and the nature of the hemodynamic response depends on both the subjects and brain regions under study. In this work, we estimated the hemodynamic responses of the fusiform face area (FFA) and the primary visual area (VI) using 1st- and 2nd-order Volterra kernels. The estimated hemodynamic responses were used to analyze fMRI data obtained from the corresponding regions. The results of the analysis of fMRI data using the estimated hemodynamic responses show a more significant activation than is obtained by conventional analysis using the hemodynamic response modeled by gamma function. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Advance care planning and advance directive awareness among East Asian older adults: Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea
AIM: Population aging is a global phenomenon, and East Asian countries are no exception. However, the use of advance care planning (ACP) and advance directives (ADs) are not widespread in East Asia. This study aimed to examine the awareness of ACP/ADs and its related factors among community-dwelling older persons in Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, cross-cultural questionnaire conducted among a convenience sample of community-dwelling persons. The questionnaire included information regarding awareness of ACP/ADs and personal information. Multiple logistic regression was used assess relationships between awareness of ACP/ADs and potential related factors.
RESULTS: The sample consisted of 404 community-dwelling older adults: 174 (43.0%) from Japan, 132 (32.7%) from Hong Kong and 98 (24.3%) from South Korea. In total, 122 participants (30.2%) had heard of ACP/ADs. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that an educational level >12 years was significantly associated with increased ACP/ADs awareness (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 2.19, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.18-4.07, P = 0.01). The rate of those who have heard of ACP/ADs was significantly higher among Japanese than South Koreans were (AOR: 4.54, 95% CI: 1.64-12.58, P < 0.01), those from Hong Kong than South Korea (AOR: 5.15, 95% CI 1.89-14.0, P < 0.01) after some variables with significant differences among the three countries were controlled.
CONCLUSIONS: In particular, support tailored to the targets' educational levels will be required. It is also suggested that support is needed to enhance awareness of ACP/ADs in East Asia, although there is a difference in degree of awareness among the three countries
