Broad-band LP02 mode excitation using a fused-type mode-selective coupler
We demonstrate a novel fused-type directional coupler that couples the LP01 mode in one fiber and the LP02 mode in another using a few-mode fiber. The phase-matching condition was satisfied in the coupler waist by initially etching and prepulling portions of the fibers based on simple numerical calculation. A coupling efficiency of about 70% was maintained over 1515-1595-nm wavelength range, and the mode extinction ratios with LP01, LP11, and LP21 modes were measured to be 35, 20, and 7 dB, respectively.The authors would like to thank LG Cable Ltd. for offering

Fused bitapered single-mode fiber directional coupler for core and cladding mode coupling
We demonstrate a new functional fiber component providing coupling between the LP1m cladding (LP1mcl) mode in one single-mode fiber (SMF) and the LP01 core mode in another SMF. The phase-matching condition in the coupling region is achieved by prepulling the fiber sections. The experimentally demonstrated coupling efficiency between the LP01 core and the LP13cl des is more than 60% over 70-nm wavelength range with less than 3% variation over 90 degrees C temperature range
All-fiber wavelength-tunable acoustooptic switches based on intermodal coupling in fibers
In this paper, we demonstrate a novel all-fiber wavelength-tunable acoustooptic switch utilizing intermodal coupling in a two-mode fiber (TMF). Its all-fiber configuration consisting of a fiber acoustooptic tunable filter and a mode-selective coupler results in the low loss (< 2 dB) operation. The operating bandwidth > 50 nm, the switching time of 40 musec, and the crosstalk of 20 dB were achieved. By controlling the design parameters of the two-mode fiber, the 3-dB bandwidth of the switched signal was varied from 2.5 nm to > 35 nm. A novel all-fiber dynamic optical add-drop multiplexer is also demonstrated using two acoustooptic switches in series.The authors would like to thank Prof. Y. H. Lee for fruitful

Identification and characterization of a human cDNA homologous to yeast SKI2
A monoclonal antibody, 170A1, which recognizes a nucleolar peptide of molecular weight 90,000, was raised. The protein was conserved among various vertebrates. To characterize the antigen, we screened a human fetal liver expression library using the monoclonal antibody as a probe. Molecular analyses of immunopositive clones suggested the presence of a novel cDNA. It appeared to be a single-copy gene and encoded about 4- and 5-kb mRNAs. The gene appeared to be expressed in every cell tested so far. Its deduced amino acid sequence revealed an overall homology to recently described yeast SKI2. The SKI2 gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae encoded a nucleolar protein that is involved in the antiviral system, We report here the partial human cDNA sequence and the localization of the corresponding gene on chromosome 6p21. In this letter, we demonstrate a high performance fused-type mode selective coupler that couples the LP11 mode in one fiber and the LP01 mode in another using highly elliptical core two-mode fibers. The phase-matching condition was achieved by etching and prepulling portions of two-mode fibers. The coupling efficiency and the mode extinction ratio of 56% to 80% and 22-32 dB, respectively, were achieved with high temperature stability over 1515- to 1595-nm wavelength range
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
