    Thermal expansion of UO2 and simulated DUPIC fuel

    The lattice parameters of simulated DUPIC fuel and UO2 were measured from room temperature to 1273 K using neutron diffraction to investigate the thermal expansion and density variation with temperature. The lattice parameter of simulated DUPIC fuel is lower than that of UO2. and the linear thermal expansion of simulated DUPIC fuel is higher than that of UO2. For the temperature range from 298 to 1273 K, the average linear thermal expansion coefficients for UO2, and simulated DUPIC fuel are 10.471 x 10(-6) and 10.751 x 10(-6) K-1, respectively.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS)/vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) hybrid materials were prepared and the hydrolysis and condensation reactions during processing were investigated by means of Si-29 NMR solution spectroscopy. The variation of drying characteristics of the coating films was examined with respect to the tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS)/vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) ratio, as well as drying temperature, by FT-IR spectroscopy. It is shown that the TO mode of Si-O-Si stretching absorption was enhanced with increasing tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) content and drying temperature. Also, the wettability of the coating films on polymer films was independent of the solution composition but enhanced by the precoating of poly(4-hydroxystrene) (PHS) as a wetting agent. The adhesion between the coating and the films was also enhanced when the vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) content in the coating solution was increased

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Columnar grain growth of Yttria-stabilized-zirconia in inductively coupled plasma spraying

    Yttria-stabilized-zirconia (YSZ) was deposited 7 mm thick by inductively coupled plasma spraying (ICP) and a theory of nucleation and solidification of YSZ was introduced. The concentration was homogeneous within a particle, but different from particle to particle. The solute rejection by diffusion occurred in a layer during solidification, but the interface condition of (dT(q)/dz)(z=0) > m(dC/dz)(z=0) led columnar grains to facilitate. The microstructure of the bottom part showed small equiaxed grains. In the middle part, large columnar grains, about 100 mum thick and 300 mum long, were developed through the layers with strong adhesion. Heat of droplets, latent heat of solidification, small pore array in the splat boundaries, and low thermal conductivity retard the heat transfer, and thus thick and long columnar grains could be facilitated. The long columnar grain growth through the layers was supposed to be possible when the previously solidified surface of the deposit acts as seed

    An optical microswitch chip integrated with silicon waveguides and touch-down electrostatic micromirrors

    We present an silicon-on-insulator (SOI) optical microswitch, composed of silicon waveguides and electrostatically actuated gold-coated silicon micromirrors integrated with laser diode (LD) receivers and photo diode (PD) transmitters. For a low switching voltage, we modify the conventional curved electrode microactuator into a new microactuator with touch-down beams. We fabricate the waveguides and the actuated micromirror using the inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching process of SOI wafers. The fabricated microswitch operates at the switching voltage of 31.7 +/- 4 V with the resonant frequency of 6.89 kHz. Compared to the conventional microactuator, the touch-down beam microactuator achieves 77.4% reduction of the switching voltage. We observe the single mode wave propagation through the silicon waveguide with the measured micromirror loss of 4.18 +/- 0.25 dB. We discuss a feasible method to achieve the switching voltage lower than 10 V by reducing the residual stress in the insulation layers of touch-down beams to the level of 30 MPa. We also analyze the major source of micromirror loss, thereby presenting design guidelines for low-loss micromirror switches

    Remote fabrication and irradiation test of recycled nuclear fuel prepared by the oxidation and reduction of spent oxide fuel

    A direct dry recycling process was developed in order to reuse spent pressurized light water reactor (LWR) nuclear fuel in CANDU reactors without the separation of sensitive nuclear materials such as plutonium. The benefits of the dry recycling process are the saving of uranium resources and the reduction of spent fuel accumulation as well as a higher proliferation resistance. In the process of direct dry recycling, fuel pellets separated from spent LWR fuel rods are oxidized from UO2 to U3O8 at 500 degrees C in an air atmosphere and reduced into UO2 at 700 degrees C in a hydrogen atmosphere, which is called OREOX (oxidation and reduction of oxide fuel). The pellets are pulverized during the oxidation and reduction processes due to the phase transformation between cubic UO2 and orthorhombic U3O8. Using the oxide powder prepared from the OREOX process, the compaction and sintering processes are performed in a remote manner in a shielded hot cell due to the high radioactivity of the spent fuel. Most of the fission gas and volatile fission products are removed during the OREOX and sintering processes. The mini-elements fabricated by the direct dry recycling process are irradiated in the HANARO research reactor for the performance evaluation of the recycled fuel pellets. Post-irradiation examination of the irradiated fuel showed that microstructural evolution and fission gas release behavior of the dry-recycled fuel were similar to high burnup UO2 fuel.
