Back to the future: A logical framework for temporal information representation and inferencing from financial news
Temporal information carries information about changes and time of the changes. Consider a company investing in another company. The former may choose to inject the money gradually with the amount and frequency depending on the performance of the latter. This shows that an event can be completed in multiple steps and at any given time before completion, it is partially completed. Thus, the status of an event at any time could be described by some degree of completion. One can make inference based on such temporal information to predict what event(s) would.likely happen next. The prediction could be made not only based on the completed or partially completed events in the past, but also based on the correlation between the events, which have taken place (i.e. executed events), and the ones planned (i.e. planned events). This process of making inference based on the executed and planned temporal events is described lively as "Back to the Future" and can be considered as part of the formally-called temporal information inference. Existing temporal information processing frameworks (e.g., temporal database, temporal information extraction, and temporal logic), however, are ineffective for this purpose. This paper defines a novel logical framework for two-dimensional (i.e., executed and planned time lines) temporal information representing and inferencing. An operational model realising the logical framework in financial news data is also addressed

Reverence to Su Shi (1037-1101) in Southern Song calligraphy
M.Phil.A major trend of Southern Song calligraphy was to style after the Northern Song masters, among whom Su Shi was the most influential. His calligraphic works gained great prestige, eagerly collected and practiced by a large class of intellectuals. To analyze such reverence to Su Shi in Southern Song calligraphy, the current thesis approaches from three perspectives, including the relevant collection, carving, and practice. These activities were carried out in a nationwide scope, involving the court, literati, and publics, who all held high regard toward the master. For a better understanding of such devoted admiration, a wider scope shall be set, considering the contemporary political and social dynamics, and also the interacting influences between Su Shi’s various accomplishments. To begin with, the thesis first illustrates how major collectors, including the court, Yue Ke岳珂 (1182–1243), Zhao Yuqin 趙與懃 (born 1180s) and Jia Sidao 賈似道 (1213–1275) avidly sought after Su’s artworks. Second, accompanied with the large-scale and fine-quality collection, many calligraphic pieces of Su were preserved in model-calligraphy including Model-calligraphy Compendium of Master Su Dongpo (Donpo Su Gong tie 東坡蘇公帖), Model-calligraphy Compendium at Gushu (Gushu tie 姑孰帖), Model-calligraphy Compendium of Qunyu Hall (Qunyutang tie 群玉堂帖), Model-Calligraphy of the Yugu Tower (Yugutai fatie 鬱孤臺法帖), Model-calligraphy Compendium of Chengqing Hall (Chengqingtang tie 澄清堂帖). Third, the prevalent calligraphic style of Su Shi is demonstrated in the case studies of Zhao Lingzhi趙令畤 (1064–1134), Wang Anzhong 王安中 (1075–1134), Sun Di 孫覿 (1081–1169), Yue Fei 岳飛 (1103–1142) and Lu You 陸游 (1125–1210), and an overview on other calligraphers. Last, an observation is made on how political promotion on Su’s upright characters led to his prominence, supplemented with a discussion on the development of “Two Prose Poems on Red Cliff” theme in calligraphy and painting. By observing Su’s artistic dominance from various aspects, the study aims to elaborate its stand in the history of calligraphy and interpret its significance of the era. Chang, Chih Chieh.Thesis M.Phil. Modeling Pedestrian Tactical and Operational Decisions Under Risk and Uncertainty: A Two-Layer Model Framework
Pedestrian tactical choices and operational movement in evacuations essentially pertain to decision-making under risk and uncertainty. However, in microscopic evacuation models, this attribute has been greatly overlooked, even lacking a methodology to delineate the related decision characteristics (bounded rationality and risk attitudes), let alone their effects on evacuation processes. This work presents an innovative two-layer floor field cellular automaton model framework, where three intertwined sub-modules respectively dedicated to modelling the exit choice, the locomotion movement and the exit-choice changing behaviours are proposed and integrated as an entity. By introducing various decision-making elements computed by the proposed algorithm, Cumulative Prospect Theory (CPT) is proposed for the first time to model the exit choice and locomotion decision-making under risk and uncertainty. In the exit-choice changing module, attractive and repulsive forces are invented to jointly describe the tendency to revisit the routing decision. Each sub-module and the whole framework are validated in manifold indoor environments. The simulation results of the modules with CPT accord with the empirics from the evacuation experiments and are superior over those from the state-of-the-art models. The degree of rationality and risk attitudes are proven to have significant impacts on tactical and operational decisions. Furthermore, irrational behaviour in decision-making is not variably detrimental to locomotion efficiency of pedestrians. The proposed framework can serve as an elegant tool to predict pedestrian dynamics. The behavioural findings shed new light on understanding and modelling the tactical and operational decisions in evacuations.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Transport and Plannin
Atomic layer deposition of crystalline SrHfO3 directly on Ge (001) for high-k dielectric applications
abstract: The current work explores the crystalline perovskite oxide, strontium hafnate, as a potential high-k gate dielectric for Ge-based transistors. SrHfO3 (SHO) is grown directly on Ge by atomic layer deposition and becomes crystalline with epitaxial registry after post-deposition vacuum annealing at ∼700 °C for 5 min. The 2 × 1 reconstructed, clean Ge (001) surface is a necessary template to achieve crystalline films upon annealing. The SHO films exhibit excellent crystallinity, as shown by x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The SHO films have favorable electronic properties for consideration as a high-k gate dielectric on Ge, with satisfactory band offsets (>2 eV), low leakage current (<10[superscript −5] A/cm[superscript 2] at an applied field of 1 MV/cm) at an equivalent oxide thickness of 1 nm, and a reasonable dielectric constant (k ∼ 18). The interface trap density (Dit ) is estimated to be as low as ∼2 × 10[superscript 12] cm[superscript −2] eV[superscript −1] under the current growth and anneal conditions. Some interfacial reaction is observed between SHO and Ge at temperatures above ∼650 °C, which may contribute to increased Dit value. This study confirms the potential for crystalline oxides grown directly on Ge by atomic layer deposition for advanced electronic applications.Copyright 2015 American Institute of Physics. Effects of self-compassion on aggression and its psychological mechanism through perceived stress
Abstract Given the increasing global concerns about aggressive behaviors and the pressing need for effective psychological interventions, this study delves into the potential of a concept deeply rooted in positive and Buddhist psychology but largely researched in Western contexts, as a mitigating factor against aggression in Chinese adults. Through three core studies involving 652 participants (age: 30.52±8.16), our research illuminated the intricate relationship between self-compassion, perceived stress, and aggression. Study 1 identified a negative correlation among these variables, setting the empirical foundation. In Study 2, participants exposed to a self-compassion exercise reported enhanced self-compassion and reduced aggression. Study 3 further consolidated these findings, with participants in the self-compassion writing group, showing notable increases in self-compassion and decreases in aggression compared to a control group. Critically, perceived stress emerged as a significant mediator between self-compassion and aggression, elucidating its central role in this dynamic. Together, our findings underscore the promise of self-compassion as a strategy to curb aggression tendencies, especially in light of its influential relationship with perceived stress, suggesting vital implications for future mental health interventions
A New Numerical Modelling Method for System Energy Efficiency Calculation
This paper focuses on greenhouse gas emissions of new energy ships by investigating energy efficiency of the ships using solar photovoltaic system. According to the operating characteristics of the diesel generator set, a novel energy efficiency model of the generator diesel engine was established, where the solar photovoltaic system was included to analyze the model energy efficiency. In order to evaluate the feasibility and availability of the proposed model, experimental data acquired from the solar photovoltaic system testing, in a real-world large ro-ro ship, was collected and compared with the model output. The fuel consumption with and without the use of the solar photovoltaic system was used to analyze the ship’s energy efficiency. The comparison results demonstrate that the proposed energy efficiency model for marine generator diesel engines with solar photovoltaic system is able to represent the ship’s efficiency level, with an estimation error of 3.43 %.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5755/j01.eie.24.6.21520
