Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textLe partenaire industriel de cette thèse, Valrhona SA, un fabricant de chocolat haut de gamme, classe les lots de fèves de cacao marchand qui arrivent dans son site de production en quatre "pôles sensoriels" qui représentent des tendances de diversité de flaveur ou de caractéristiques organoleptiques du chocolat. Cette thèse a pour objectif de faire le lien entre la composition phénolique des fèves de cacao et du chocolat, et les quatre pôles sensoriels définis par Valrhona. La stratégie consiste plus particulièrement à prédire l’appartenance d’un chocolat à un pôle sensoriel à partir de la quantité, déterminée par spectrométrie de masse couplée à la chromatographie liquide ultra haute performance (UHPLC-MS), de certains polyphénols marqueurs dans le cacao ou le chocolat. Le premier objectif a été de déterminer quels sont les polyphénols qui participent le plus à la discrimination des pôles sensoriels. Pour cela, après une phase de mise au point de protocoles d’extraction des polyphénols à partir des échantillons de cacao et de chocolat, les extraits ont été analysé par UHPLC-MS afin d’obtenir des empreintes sans a priori. Une méthode de chimiométrie de sélection de variables (les signaux détectés en spectrométrie de masse) a été développée. Certains de ces composés ont également été identifiés et ont permis de mettre en évidence que dans l'extrait polyphénolique, d'autres composés non polyphénoliques participent eux-aussi à la discrimination. Une fois ce premier objectif rempli, une méthode de quantification des polyphénols cibles dans le cacao et le chocolat a été développée en couplage UHPLC-MS/MS en mode Multiple Reaction Monitoring (MRM) et validée.Enfin le dernier objectif a été de faire le lien entre les données quantitatives et les pôles sensoriels, ainsi que de suivre l’évolution de la matrice cacao lors de sa transformation en chocolat grâce à différentes analyses chimiométriques. Des régression PLS (Partial Least Square) et une analyse multiblocs CCSWA (Common Component Specific Weight Analysis) ont été appliquées sur les jeux de données de quantification des polyphénols et des analyses sensorielles. Cela a permis de mettre en évidence le lien complexe entre la composition polyphénolique des cacaos et des chocolats, et les données sensorielles fournies par Valrhona.This thesis' industrial partner, Valrhona SA, a premium quality chocolate maker, sorts its cocoa beans batches arriving in its production site into four “sensory groups” representing flavour trending or chocolate sensory characteristics.This thesis’s objective is to link the cocoa beans and chocolates polyphenolic composition to the four sensory poles defined by Valrhona. More precisely, it aims to predict the batches’ belonging to a sensory pole based on the quantities of some polyphenols markers analysed in cocoa or chocolate after an ultra-high liquid chromatography mass spectrometry analysis (UHPLC-MS).The first step was to determine which polyphenols are involved in the sensory poles discrimination. Therefore, a protocol has been optimized to extract polyphenolic compounds from cocoa beans and chocolates samples. These extracts have been analysed by UHPLC-MS in order to create a raw polyphenolic fingerprint. Based on chemometric approach, a variable selection has been developed on these fingerprints mass signals allowing to generate lists of markers involved in the sensory poles discrimination. Most of the compounds have been identified as polyphenolic molecules and few were non-phenolic molecules.The second step consisted in developing a quantitative method specific to the markers previously highlighted in both cocoa beans and chocolate samples. The analysis have been conducted using UHPLC-MS/MS in Multiple Reaction Monitoring (MRM) mode, and the quantitative methods have been validated. The last step was to study the link between the quantitative data previously generated and the sensory poles, as well as following the cocoa beans composition through the chocolate making process using chemometric analysis. PLS (Partial Least Square) models has been tested as well as a multiblocs analysis called CCSWA (Common Component Specific Weight Analysis). Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
