Eponymous terms in orthopedic surgery
Het woord ‘eponiem’ is afgeleid van het Griekse ‘eponumos (ἐπώνυμος) en betekent ‘vernoemd naar’. In dagelijkse medische/chirugische praktijk hebben wij voortdurend te maken met anatomische structuren, instrument en operaties die in de loop der tijd, om wat voor reden dan ook, verbonden zijn geraakt aan de namen van bekende en minder bekende chirurgen. Het gebruik van eponiemen is vanzelfsprekend in onze communicatie, maar ze kunnen ook leiden tot misinterpretaties. Er zijn voor– en tegenstanders in de discussie of het verstandig is om eponiemen te blijven gebruiken in onze communicatie en literatuur. In dit proefschrift komen vele eponiemen aan bod, variërend van de Thompson test voor achillespees rupturen tot aan de Bankart laesie, Monteggia en Galeazzi fractuur-dislocaties, de Kocher-Langenbeck benadering en de Hoffa fractuur van het distale femur. Wij hebben geprobeerd om door middel van bronnenonderzoek, surveys en anatomische studies vast te stellen hoe eponiemen ontstaan en wat er gebeurt met de interpretatie en het gebruik van eponiemen in de loop der tijd

The Pellegrini-Stieda Lesion Dissected Historically
The Pellegrini–Stieda lesion is a common finding on conventional X-rays. Whether it originates in the medial collateral ligament (MCL) of the knee or the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle or another structure remains under debate. We discuss the difference in the articles by Pellegrini and Stieda and follow the vision on the origin of the lesion through time. A systematic research in PubMed/MEDLINE was conducted, identifying all articles on the Pellegrini–Stieda lesion and analyzing them for proposed origin of the lesion. The articles with their conclusion based on either finding during surgery or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/computed tomography were analyzed in more detail. Our PubMed/Medline search identified 4,997 articles. After exclusion of articles that were not on the Pellegrini–Stieda lesion and of doubles, 27 articles remained. By checking the references manually, 10 more articles were identified. Proposed origins were MCL, medial gastrocnemius, adductor magnus, vastus medialis, deep MCL, and superficial MCL. Although the MCL was most often coined as origin of the lesion (54% overall, 25% on MRI, and 57% during surgery), many cases remained undecided (50% on MRI) or no specific structure was found to be the origin (29% during surgery). There are diverse proposed origins of a calcification on the medial side of the knee. The eponymous term Pellegrini–Stieda lesion seems fitting, as it comprises two different thoughts on the origin of the lesion. MRI seems to be a noninvasive and quite accurate method for future research

Jeremiah 28:8–9 and the Oracles against the Nations
This article focuses on Jer 28:8–9, a text commonly considered as proof for the existence of “prophecies against the nations” as a distinct kind of prophecy in the late monarchic era. The author, however, argues that Jer 28 does not testify to a subgenre of prophecy, but rather to the appearance of foreign nations in prophetic oracles in general, in which they figure as “the enemy” who will be trampled down. According to this understanding, it is not Jeremiah, but Hananiah who prophesies “war” – for Babylonia. And it is Jeremiah who prophesies “peace” – again for Babylonia. In 28:1–14*, which belongs to the earliest narrative traditions relating to Jeremiah, the prophet Jeremiah is depicted as announcing Babylonia’s good fortune, thereby implying that Judah’s survival depends on submission. During a much later, redactional stage, Babylonia’s ruination became part of the preaching ascribed to Jeremiah. It is in this redactional sphere that we can situate the Oracles concerning the Nations. Accordingly, they constitute a literary development, not a subclass of oral prophecy
The origins and current applications of classic eponymous terms for pelvic and acetabular fractures:A historic review
We present the historical background of 5 eponymous terms in pelvic and acetabular injury treatment. The eponymous terms Duverney fracture, Malgaigne fracture, Judet-Letournel classification, Kocher-Langenbeck approach and Stoppa approach are discussed. After presenting the original description by the coining author, a short biography of the author is given. For each eponymous term the current clinical implication is given and discussed afterwards. Bootstrapping LPs in Value Iteration for Multi-Objective and Partially Observable MDPs
Iteratively solving a set of linear programs (LPs) is a common strategy for solving various decision-making problems in Artificial Intelligence, such as planning in multi-objective or partially observable Markov Decision Processes (MDPs). A prevalent feature is that the solutions to these LPs become increasingly similar as the solving algorithm converges, because the solution computed by the algorithm approaches the fixed point of a Bellman backup operator. In this paper, we propose to speed up the solving process of these LPs by bootstrapping based on similar LPs solved previously. We use these LPs to initialize a subset of relevant LP constraints, before iteratively generating the remaining constraints. The resulting algorithm is the first to consider such information sharing across iterations. We evaluate our approach on planning in Multi-Objective MDPs (MOMDPs) and Partially Observable MDPs (POMDPs), showing that it solves fewer LPs than the state of the art, which leads to a significant speed-up. Moreover, for MOMDPs we show that our method scales better in both the number of states and the number of objectives, which is vital for multi-objective planning.Algorithmic
