Financial dollarization in Russia: causes and consequences

    No full text
We review some aspects of financial dollarization in Russia, applying the main relevant theories to analyze the dynamics of several dollarization indicators. An econometric model of the short run dynamics of deposit and loan dollarization is estimated for the last decade. We find that ruble appreciation was the main driver of the de-dollarization that occurred then and of the later episode of renewed dollarization. We estimate the overall (and sectoral) currency mismatches of the Russian economy. The results show a gradual improvement of the net foreign currency position of the public sector, where we have seen significant accumulation of international reserves by the Bank of Russia and repayment of government debt. Evidence is also presented for the significant currency risk vulnerability of the nonbanking private sector. Several existing empirical studies are examined in order to assess the growth losses of the Russian economy following the crisis of 2008, which was linked with the financial dollarization.financial dollarization; currency mismatch; balance sheet effects; Russia

Technology in Russian Strategic Culture: From the Nineteenth Century to the Present Day

    No full text
This book traces the dynamics of military-technological innovation in Russia over the last hundred and fifty years, particularly focusing on three distinct periods: the introduction of rifled breech-loading weapons in Imperial Russia in the nineteenth century, the invention of nuclear weapons in the Soviet Union in the twentieth century, and the development of precision-guided weapons in post-Soviet Russia in the twenty-first century. The analysis relies extensively on primary data obtained from Russian archives, complemented by a series of expert interviews, and deciphers Russia’s distinct strategic cultural approach to military-technological innovation. Anzhelika Solovyeva is an assistant professor at the Department of Security Studies, Institute of Political Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University. Besides Karolinum Press, her publications have appeared in Oxford University Press, Routledge, Palgrave Macmillan, Rowman & Littlefield, as well as Scopus Q1-ranked journals and journals with an impact factor (IF).Tato kniha sleduje dynamiku vojensko-technologických inovací v Rusku za posledních sto padesát let, přičemž se zaměřuje zejména na tři odlišná období: zavedení puškových zbraní se závěrovým mechanismem v carském Rusku v 19. století, vynález jaderných zbraní v Sovětském svazu ve 20. století a vývoj přesně naváděných zbraní v postsovětském Rusku v 21. století.

The Construction of Warfare Technology in Russian Military Thinking Anzhelika Solovyeva Abstract This dissertation traces the dynamics of military-technological innovation in Russia over the last hundred and fifty years. The analysis relies extensively on primary data obtained from Russian archives, complemented by a series of expert interviews. The goal is to understand whether and to what extent Russia's respective discourses and practices constitute a distinct strategic cultural approach. The relationship between strategic culture and military- technological innovation is considered from two different, yet complementary, perspectives. From an empirical standpoint, the analysis is guided by six substantial arguments derived from the existing literature on Russian strategic culture, technology and military doctrine, interviews conducted by the author, and partially from the author's own knowledge of the problematic. In theoretical terms, this dissertation offers and graphically nuances a novel conceptual model, theorizing processes related to military-technological innovation and the role of strategic cultural frames. The last two arguments guiding the empirical focus of this dissertation are derived from the theoretical discussion. This model is subsequently applied to three case studies, with the key...Konstrukce Válečné Technologie v Ruském Vojenském Myšlení Anzhelika Solovyeva Abstrakt Tato disertační práce sleduje dynamiku vojensko-technologických inovací v Rusku za posledních 150 let. Z empirického hlediska je analýza vedena šesti podstatnými argumenty odvozenými z dosavadní literatury o ruské strategické kultuře, technologii a vojenské doktríně, z rozhovorů vedených autorkou a částečně z autorčiných vlastních znalostí problematiky.

    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

В. Ломоносова (Москва), [email protected] Yuliya O. Solovyeva, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Linguistics, Translation and Intercultural Communication, Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies, Lomonosov Moscow State University (Moscow), [email protected]В статье рассматриваются сходства и различия двух гибридных типов дискурса: популярно-юридического и медийного юридического, которые, несмотря на наличие общих характеристик, по-разному определяют правовую реальность. The author analyzes similarities and differences of the two hybrid types of discourse: popular legal discourse and legal media discourse, which, despite having some common features, construct different legal reality. The comparison of relevant discourses is based on such parameters as: discursive type, communication participants, the purpose of communication, dominant topics and transmitted values. The author proposes various approaches to identifying the types of the hybrid discourses in question, according to their bases and the nature of interaction of intersecting discourses. Much attention is given to the purposes and pragmatic characteristics of the texts of relevant discourses. Thus, texts of legal media discourse aim to inform the population about current legal processes and changes in legal rules along with their explanation and assessment in order to manipulate the mind of the reader. The pragmatic goal of the texts of popular legal discourse is the fixation and popularization of legal knowledge for improving legal awareness of the audience. The values transmitted via the texts of popular legal discourse, and the concepts formed in public consciousness, are universal for many cultures of the world and have long-lasting significance. Concepts of legal media discourse can lose their value if the media topic becomes irrelevant
