Emblematic Patterns and Metaphysical Meanings of Hryhorii Skovoroda
Get PDFThe focus of the author’s attention has been on the emblematic sense concentration in the
philosophical system of Hryhorii Skovoroda. The study aims to reveal the artistic and style
features of eide emblematic formation in the texts of the Ukrainian sophist, their origin,
context, and conceptual classifi cation by the author himself. The theoretical generalizations
were essentially based on the philosophical treatises and dialogues by Hryhorii Skovoroda and
the studies of other scholars. To analyze the issues under scrutiny, the author applied structuralist
and semiotic methodology. The article highlights the emblematic sense, conveyance, and
dominance in Skovoroda’s works. Emblematic forms of signifi cation play a unique role in
elucidating the anthropological, metaphysical, ethical, aesthetic, and hermeneutic dimensions
of the Ukrainian poet and philosopher. Skovoroda considers emblemacity a particularly
eff ective pictorial and verbal (iconic-conventional) type of "signifi cative" speech, functioning
as metalanguage

No full textAim Emblematic types of signification, their sources and possible variants of adoption in the works by Hryhorii Skovoroda have been studied in the paper. The aim of the article is to identify, to compare and to interpret the emblematic forms and patterns in the 16th-18th century European collections and the texts by Hryhorii Skovoroda.
Methods In the article there has been applied the systems approach alongside with the cultural-historical and genetic methods. The author bases himself upon the methodology of semiotics and structuralism and employs the tenets of literary hermeneutics. This is due to the special nature of the study, its object and subject of inquiry. Semiotic and structural similarities in the texts by Hryhorii Skovoroda have been concluded by virtue of genetic tracking of symbolic meaning production modifications in the 16th-18th century European literature and culture and the emblematic collections review.
Results The history of Hryhorii Skovoroda’s «emblematic» style studies has been observed in the paper. The early and the most influential scholars, whose achievements have become the basis for singling out certain urgency of the aforementioned issue, have been listed. The pictures’ comparison from the dialogue «Razgovor, nazyivaemyiy Alfavit, ili Bukvar Mira», particular symbols and emblematic patterns culled from other works and from the European emblematic collections are the foundation on which we have determined that the majority of Skovoroda’s emblematic constructions were borrowed from the Amsterdam edition Symbola et еmblemata selecta in the first place. Some of these loans are modified variants from the books by Andrea Alciato, Daniel de la Feuille, Henricus Engelgrave, Diego de Saavedra Fajardo, that were reconstructed from memory or from the enlarged painting replicas. It is emphasized that Hryhorii Skovoroda has freely construed the emblematic patterns, adjusting symbolic schemes under his own semantic statement. He has creatively modified iconic-conventional patterns and introduced them into new contexts. Hryhorii Skovoroda semantically manages significant visual-graphic «universals» through the agency of biblical text, frequently intertwining various figurative and verbal contexts.
Scientific novelty In the article the accomplishments of scholars of different periods, who studied the influence of emblematics on Hryhorii Skovoroda’s works, have been generalized. The originality of the Ukrainian philosopher’s emblematic style self-expression has also been emphasized.
The practical significance The article can be used to further study the presence of the European emblematic literature traditions in the 16th-18th century Ukrainian culture and in the works by Hryhorii Skovoroda in particular. The scientific results of the study may lay the basis for writing term and qualification papers.Мета Статтю присвячено дослідженню емблематичних типів сигніфікації у творчості Г. Сковороди, їх джерел та можливих варіантів запозичень. Метою цієї статті є виявлення, порівняння та інтерпретація емблематичних форм та схем з європейських збірників 16–18 століття і текстів Григорія Сковороди.
Дослідницька методика У дослідженні використано системний підхід із застосуванням культурно-історичного та генетичного методів. Автор опирається на наукову методику семіотики та структуралізму, використовує літературознавчу герменевтику. Це зумовлено специфікою дослідження, його об’єктом та предметом. На основі генетичного відстеження модифікацій символічних смислопредставлень у європейській літературі та культурі 16-18 століть, огляду емблематичних збірок висновуються семіотичні та структурні аналогії у текстах Г. Сковороди.
Результати У статті оглянуто історію досліджень «емблематичного» стилю Г. Сковороди, відзначено перших і найвпливовіших дослідників, чиї досягнення стали підставою для виокремлення актуальності визначеної проблеми. На основі порівняння малюнків із діалогу «Разговор, называемый Алфавіт, или Букварь Мира», окремих символів і емблематичних шаблонів з інших творів та європейських емблематичних збірок встановлено, що більшість емблематичних конструкцій Г. Сковороди запозичено, насамперед, з амстердамського видання «„Symbola et еmblemata selecta”, окремі є модифікованими варіантами з книг А. Альціато, Д. де ля Фея, Г. Енгельграве, Д. де Сааведри Фахардо, які відновлено з пам’яті, або зі збільшених картин-репродукцій. У статті наголошується, що Г. Сковорода вільно інтерпретує емблематичні зразки, підлаштовуючи символічні схеми під власний смисловий виклад, творчо модифікує іконічно-конвенційні шаблони та вносить їх у нові контексти. Знакові візуально-образні «універсалії» Сковорода семантично координує за допомогою біблійного тексту, часто переплітає різноджерельні зображальні та вербальні контексти.
Наукова новизна У статті узагальнюються досягнення дослідників різних періодів, що вивчали вплив емблематики на творчість Г. Сковороди, а також закцентовано на своєрідності емблематичного стилю самовираження українського філософа.
Практичне значення Стаття може бути використана для подальшого вивчення присутності традицій європейської емблематичної літератури в українській культурі 16–18 століть, зокрема творчості Г. Сковороди. Наукові результати дослідження можуть лягти в основу написання курсових та дипломних робіт

No full textAim. The paper deals with the study of emblematic meanings in a cognitive framework. The effect of an «emblem» and associated with the emblematic mechanisms phenomena have been examined in conformity with the cognitive principles. The purpose of the paper is to compare and interpret emblematic forms and schemes in different contexts, and to identify functional similarities in modelling cognitive meanings. Methods. The study uses a systemic approach with cultural-historical, genetic, hermeneutic and semiotic methods. The author draws on the scientific methodology of semiotics and hermeneutics and employs the cognitive theory of literature (cognitive poetics). This is due to the distinctive nature of the study, its subject of inquiry and scope of research. Based on the genetic tracing of the functionality of emblematic forms, their structural and cognitive affinity in formatting and modelling meanings has been determined. Results. The paper reviews the history of emblematic forms studies, noting their diverse nominations and consolidated semantic generalizations, the history of their functioning and their cultural and cognitive effects. By comparing the manifestation of emblematic structures in myth-making, philosophy and literature, their paradigmatic involvement in the production, perception, and interpretation of meanings has been defined. Drawing on this review, the ‘emblem’ effect and emblematic mechanisms in the organization of cognitive models and the structuring of cultural and literary meanings emerge. Originality. The paper summarizes the findings of many scholars who have studied the functionality of emblematic meanings in different contexts and deduces the weight of emblematic mechanisms in the cognitive paradigm. Practical significance. The paper provides a basis for further studies on meaning modelling processes. The findings can underpin coursework and graduation theses.Мета. Статтю присвячено дослідженню емблематичних сенсів в когнітивній парадигмі. Ефект «емблеми» та пов’язані з емблематичними механізмами явища розглянуто у відповідності до когнітивних принципів. Метою статті є порівняння та інтерпретація емблематичних форм та схем у різних контекстах, виявлення функціональної спорідненості у моделюванні когнітивних сенсів. Дослідницька методика. У дослідженні використано системний підхід із застосуванням культурно-історичного, генетичного, герменевтичного та семіотичного методів. Автор опирається на наукову методику семіотики та герменевтики, використовує когнітивну теорію літератури (когнітивну поетику). Це зумовлено специфікою дослідження, його об’єктом та предметом. На основі генетичного відстеження функціональності емблематичних форм визначається їхня структуральна та когнітивна спорідненість у форматуванні та моделюванні сенсів. Результати. У статті оглянуто історію досліджень емблематичних форм, відзначено їхні різнотипні номінування та консолідовані смислові узагальнення, історію функціонування та культурологічні й когнітивні ефекти. На основі порівнянь проявленості емблематичних структур у міфотворенні, філософії, літературі визначено їхню парадигмальну роль у продукуванні, сприйнятті та інтерпретації сенсів. На основі такого огляду увиразнюється ефект «емблеми» та емблематичних механізмів у організації когнітивних моделей, структуруванні культурних та літературних сенсів. Наукова новизна. У статті узагальнюються спостереження багатьох дослідників, що вивчали функціональність емблематичних сенсів у різних контекстах, і висновується вагомість емблематичних механізмів у когнітивній парадигмі. No full textThe paper deals with the significance of the procedural nature of “flickering” meanings, identifying their functionality in the formation and interpretation of emblematic structures. By integrating visual and verbal signifiers, the emblem attains the status of an image schema, suggesting a semantic volume that it partially reconstructs. Contemporary scholarly interpretations extend the temporal and disciplinary dimensions of “emblematicity”, which, as a conceptual category, have seen a substantial increase in its applicability. This concept appeals to a foundational cognitive mechanism rooted in the coherence between phenomena and noumena, the perceptual background and verbal articulation, and the interplay of iconic and conventional elements in diverse configurations. The emblematic form presents an expanded model of the dialectical and synergetic process, whereby cognitive activity is transformed into semantic experience through verbal-iconic mediation.У статті описано вагомість процесуальності «мерехтіння» сенсів, визначено їхню функційність у формуванні та інтерпретуванні емблематичних структур. З’єднуючи в собі візуальні та вербальні сигніфікати, емблема отримувала статус образу-схеми, що натякає на смисловий об’єм, який вона частково реконструює. Трактування сучасних дослідників розширюють часові та галузеві координати функціонування «емблематичності», що як поняттєва категорія значно збільшує свою вжитковість, адже апелює до фундаментального когнітивного засобу, який опирається на когерентність феноменів та ноуменів, перцептивного фону і його вербального становлення, іконічної та конвенціональної взаємодії у найрізноманітніших комбінаціях. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
