This is a capstone policy practice skills course for social work majors. Students apply organization, community, state, and federal policy skills for international populations seeking asylum in the United States. Students research global human rights issues, cultural values, diversity and difference, and strengths, needs and values of international populations. Students analyze agency, state and federal polices; create new policies; conduct surveys; follow IRB protocols; apply theoretical frameworks; create a targeted, empirically based, and culturally sensitive program; locate and write a mock letter of intent for grant funding for their program; create a program brochure; write a policy brief; and present a policy to a mock Senate

This course addresses the American social welfare state and its historical responses to need for diverse and different populations. Of primary focus is on the interrelationship of poverty, marginalization, oppression, alienation, privilege, power, and acclaim, as well as well-being, access to services, and the delivery of services with human rights, and social, economic, and environmental justice. Students learn the social work skills of policy research, policy analysis, policy creation, macro social work ethics, online petitions, community needs assessments, researching community experts, community task force development, and writing letters to legislators.
