Interview with Farooq Sobhan: Commonwealth Oral History Project
Interview with Farooq Sobhan, conducted 19th November 2014 as part of the Commonwealth Oral History Project. The project aims to produce a unique digital research resource on the oral history of the Commonwealth since 1965 through sixty oral history interviews with leading figures in the recent history of the organisation. It will provide an essential research tool for anyone investigating the history of the Commonwealth and will serve to promote interest in and understanding of the organisation. Carrier-Based Modulation Scheme for Dual Inverter-Fed Asymmetrical Six-Phase Drives Supplied from a Single DC Source
This paper proposes a carrier-based switching strategy for dual inverter-fed asymmetric six-phase motor drives. Unlike traditional pulse width modulation techniques for multilevel inverters, the proposed method uses a single-carrier-based PWM derived by six-phase, two-level inverter-fed, star-connected asymmetrical six-phase motor (ASPM) and is derived from traditional pulse width modulation techniques for multilevel inverters. It exploits the geometric similarity between the resultant space vector (SV) structure across the ASPM stator and the SV structure of a six-phase, two-level VSI. Proposed scheme eliminates dwell time calculation, sector identification and other multilevel SVPWM related operations, the common mode voltage across the stator windings and the net common mode voltage across the two sets of three-phase winding. Moreover, the scheme eliminates non-torque-producing auxiliary plane harmonic voltages and provides a higher stator voltage (up to double) compared to single end fed ASPM drives for a given DC source voltage. In this way, operations from a single DC source without common mode zero sequence currents circulating through the stator windings are allowed. Low-Voltage Stress CI-based Quadratic Boost Converter for Distributed Energy Resources
This research introduces a high step-up DC-DC converter for renewable energy sources (RESs) that has lower voltage stress on its single switch. With one linked coupled inductor (CI), a quadratic boost converter plus a couple of multiplier units are utilized as circuits for primary and secondary, respectively. The energy from the leakage inductance can be recycled, increasing efficiency and reducing voltage stress. The proposed converter has a higher voltage gain and lower switch stress when compared to similar existing quadratic converter topologies. The operation principles and mathematical analysis of the proposed converter are thoroughly studied. Following that, a comparison of several structures is presented. Finally, simulation results of PSCAD software are shown to further verify the theoretical study
A social justice lawyer in Bangladesh : the pioneering work of Salma Sobhan
This thesis reveals how Salma Sobhan (1937-2003), a lawyer and legal academic created new and important initiatives to provide access to justice to the disadvantaged, particularly poor women, in post-independence Bangladesh. During Sobhan‚ÄövÑv¥s career as a legal academic (at Dhaka University) and social justice lawyer (mainly with Ain a Salish Kendra (ASK), a leading human rights NGO in Bangladesh), she promoted women‚ÄövÑv¥s causes in novel ways. These efforts distinguished Sobhan from many other legal academics and lawyers in Bangladesh, making her a pioneering social justice lawyer. Examining the unique features of her intellectual work and modes of social justice lawyering, this thesis shows how Sobhan responded to various legal, economic and social problems to promote access to justice for poor women. It identifies her particular brand of feminism and explores whether Sobhan‚ÄövÑv¥s feminist beliefs aligned with her actions. This thesis also explores how Sobhan became the first woman legal academic in Bangladesh. It investigates what role Sobhan‚ÄövÑv¥s gender played in the selection of her academic career and approach to lawyering. This thesis further examines how her work is recognised in the Bangladeshi legal community and identifies her primary legacies in Bangladesh. It contextualises Sobhan‚ÄövÑv¥s contributions to law and justice in Bangladesh. This study also reveals how Sobhan contributed to broaden access to justice through informal systems, clients‚ÄövÑv¥ empowerment, social reform, legal literacy, public interest litigation, scholarly work, and the various other methods she devised and advanced through the organisations she created or was affiliated with. To provide a better understanding of what motivated and influenced her work, this thesis analyses Sobhan‚ÄövÑv¥s contributions in the light of her personal circumstances, as well as national and international developments that influenced them. Presenting the strengths and limitations of Sobhan‚ÄövÑv¥s work, this thesis, the first PhD project to concentrate on a lawyer in Bangladesh, provides a deeper and richer analysis of social justice lawyering in Bangladesh, with a particular emphasis on women‚ÄövÑv¥s rights. It aims to provoke new ways of thinking about the protection of women‚ÄövÑv¥s rights in the context of an impoverished and patriarchal society
A multi-phase multilevel powertrain for full electric aircraft
Multi-phase AC drives have gained interest and popularity in the research field of full-electric aircraft (FEA). Without excessive complication, they improve highly relevant aspects of the drive including fault-tolerance, which is crucial for air transportation. In this paper, a novel concept is proposed for the electric propulsion system for the aircraft, combining the redundancy of a six-phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor with the modularity of multilevel cascaded H-bridge converters. The proposed system increases the flexibility, performance, and reliability of the electric power train. A mathematical model of the drive has been set up and some simulations exploiting different operating modes have been successfully carried reporting the main results in this paper
Adaptive Vector Control of Induction Motor Based Inverse Dynamic Dynamometer
Enhancement of the electrical machines performance with different applications requires the comprehensive study and investigations into the electrical drive systems dealing with industrial loads. Identification of the electrical motors performance characteristics and their drive systems under various loading conditions necessitates a programmable dynamometer drive system with desired dynamic characteristics to emulate the real working conditions in the laboratory environment. One of the basic challenges in such systems is to consider the effect of uncertainties and parameters variations on the dynamometer drive system performance. In this paper, the emulation of the industrial loads profile has been carried out through inverse dynamics method and by utilizing a dynamometer which is based on the adaptive model of a vector-controlled induction motor. Simulation results are presented to verify the enhanced dynamic response of the dynamometer system through the proposed method
Selective Harmonic Mitigation of Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Converters Using Real-Coded Genetic Algorithm
In this paper, the Real-Coded Genetic Algorithm (RCGA) is used to find appropriate switching angles for Selective Harmonic Mitigation (SHM) of Cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) multilevel inverters capable to meet the grid code standards for individual harmonics and total harmonic distortion (THD). The algorithm is tested on staircase multilevel waveforms. Simulation results show that the algorithm is able to find switching angles that meet the grid standards
