Hurewicz images in BP and related homology theories

    No full text
In this paper BP-theory is used to give a proof that there exists astable homotopy element in ?S2n+1?2(RP?) with non-zero Hurewicz imagein ju-theory if and only if there exists an element of ?S2n+1?2(S0) which is represented by a framed manifold of Arf invariant one

    Andrew Snaith Oral History

    No full text
Andrew Snaith served as the American University in Cairo’s chief financial officer for more than three decades (as Vice President for Finance and under other titles), administering various offices and services during his time at the university from the mid-1970s though 2010. His oral history (which complements a financial history of AUC he wrote), offers a detailed view of the university’s financial condition and administrative operations, which he connects to world events, developments in the Egyptian economy (such as Sadat’s Open Door Economic Policy), and relations with Egypt’s government in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. British by birth, Snaith came to AUC in the mid-1970s to work with its endowment operations, and he details the multi-decade evolution of AUC’s investment management as well as its funding sources, including U.S. government support. Snaith covers major developments during each of the presidents under whom he served (in particular AUC’s expansion of campus, enrollment, and academic programs and restoration to financial health under President Richard Pedersen), as well as their styles of leadership and the role played by the Board of Trustees. The relationship between finances and developments in the academic sphere is addressed, and major issues concerning student tuition and faculty compensation emerge including resistance to tuition hikes, moves to address discrepancies in salary and benefits between foreign and local hires, and the controversy over attempts under President Donald McDonald to mandate a retirement age for Egyptian faculty in the 1990s. The practices of AUC’s financial units are covered in detail, including structural changes, computerization and the adoption of new systems (like the major SAP implementation), and challenges related to operating in two currencies. He mentions the contributions of important individuals in the Controller’s Office, Purchasing, and other units, and touches on personnel practices and office dynamics including religion and gender diversity issues. Snaith speaks at length about the motivations for, planning, funding, and financial operations and implications of AUC’s relocation to a new campus in New Cairo in the first decade of the 21st century, detailing the key decisions and individuals and entities (such as contractors) involved. Research units supported in large parts by external grants, like the Desert Development Center and Social Research Center, and auxiliary enterprises (like the AUC Press, student housing, and food services) are also covered in detail

Refined and l-adic Euler characteristics of nearly perfect complexes

Just-in-time altimetry: international collaboration in provision of altimetry datasets

    No full text
Environmental research requires access to quality controlled, calibrated data. Satellite altimeter data are used in a range of environmental research, including oceanography, ice and land surface studies. Users who are not altimeter specialists may not be aware of, or have access to, the latest updates and most appropriate corrections to use for their application. We propose a GRID based methodology to give all users access to the best possible altimeter data product at the time of the request, tailor made for their specific application. A data portal system would be based on a "Network of Trust" consisting of the data providers and a certificating authority. Data could be served through a fully interactive web 'front-end' or directly from within analysis programmes. This system would build on the experiences gained in combining two existing Altimeter Data services (GAPSand RADS) to produce a coherent data service with alternative web interfaces and configurable users access

Clinical utility of the Snaith-Hamilton-Pleasure scale in the Chinese settings

    No full text
Background: The Snaith-Hamilton-Pleasure-Scale (SHAPS) is a self-reported scale evaluating anhedonia for neuropsychiatric disorders. It has demonstrated with impressive psychometric properties and advantages in its applicability over other similar instruments. However, very few studies have been conducted to examine the clinical utility of the SHAPS in the context of Chinese settings. The current study aimed to examine the clinical utility of the translated version of the SHAPS in the Chinese clinical settings

Mixed moments of characteristic polynomials of random unitary matrices

    No full text
Following the work of Conrey, Rubinstein and Snaith and Forrester and Witte we examine a mixed moment of the characteristic polynomial and its derivative for matrices from the unitary group U(N)U(N) (also known as the CUE) and relate the moment to the solution of a Painlev{\'e} differential equation. We also calculate a simple form for the asymptotic behaviour of moments of logarithmic derivatives of these characteristic polynomials evaluated near the unit circle
