Comments on A shaped reflector antenna for 60-GHz indoor wireless LAN access points
The author comments that the shaped reflector antenna principles and theory of Smulders, Khusial and Herben (see ibid., vol.50, p.584-91, Mar.2001) are based on the papers described by Kumar (see Proc. Montech '86 IEEE Conference on Antennas and Communication, 1986, IEEE Cat. No. TH0156-0, Inst. Elect. Eng. Proc., vol.134, p.106-108, 1987 and Technology Symposium, 1990). These papers described the X-band, circularly polarized shaped beam telemetry antenna suitable for retransmitting the radar data back to an earth terminal. Smulders et al. have used the same principle, and similar types of radiation patterns are produced. However, two points are different in their paper: (1) the design frequency (60 GHz) and (2) the application of antenna for indoor wireless LAN access points. Therefore, they authors should have referenced Kumar's papers. Smulders et al. agree with Kumar's comments that reflector shaping is nothing new. However, we took into account diffraction effects (by applying the uniform theory of diffraction) whereas the shaping in the paper of Kumar is based on geometrical optics, only. We showed that according to our approach, a more smooth illumination function can be achieved and how the smoothing effect depends on the amount of edge illumination. We also showed in which way the spatial field deviation can be minimized and that this could save a few decibels in the link budget

Trade Pessimists vs Technology Optimists: Induced Technical Change and Pollution Havens
Our paper focuses on the role of endogenous technology and technology spillovers in explaining cross country differences in pollution and the pollution haven effect of international trade. In our North-South trade model, technology is endogenously developed by the North and imitated by the South. Environmental regulators choose national environmental policies by trading off the income gains and the disutility from a rise in pollution. Differences in environmental stringency are entirely driven by differences in investment opportunities and distortions that follow from the difference in intellectual property rights protection. We show that without goods trade and in the absence of technology subsidies, the North imposes more stringent environmental regulation than the South. When opening up to trade, the South experiences a rise in prices for pollution-intensive goods and tends to raise pollution as in a standard trade model. Induced technical change, however, may reverse this pollution haven effect

Older workers more motivated in their work
The TNO Work Situation Survey 2002 shows that, although older workers in the Netherlands report more health problems than their younger colleagues, they are seen to be more motivated and absorbed in their work. In the light of the predicted shrinking of the labour market in the future, it will become increasingly important to facilitate older employees to stay on in work rather than encouraging them to retire early
Monitoring of occupational safety and health in the European Union : report to the European Agency
This project was carried out by TNO Work & Employment in the Netherlands in close co-operation with a group of system-information suppliers across the European member states and Norway. The report contains an overall analysis of the monitoring systems, highlighting interesting elements and pointing out shortcomings in the existing schemes (including where information is lacking). In addition to the analysis, the report contains suggestions about the content of a possible OSH Monitoring system at European level. The 23 European OSH Monitoring systems that are described and reviewed in this report are not necessarily 'the best' but express in a representative way 'the variety' available in the European Union with respect to aim, use, content, and methodology of systems. The list of systems includes worker surveys, databases, registers of accidents, diseases, and/or absenteeism, policy-directed systems and intervention- and OSH-management oriented systems. Four types of data gathering are used: surveys or questionnaires (14 systems), social security registers (9 systems), workplace observations (8 systems), and use of national census data (5 systems)
