    Interview with Howard G. Smits

    No full text
An interview in February 1979 with Caltech alumnus Howard G. Smits, former president of the Pacific Iron and Steel Company, who graduated with a BS (1931) and MS (1933) in civil engineering. He discusses the different focus, in Caltech’s early days, of engineers vis-à-vis theoretical scientists. He was a member of the Gnomes, and he reminisces about fraternity life and the disbanding of the fraternities in 1931 in favor of student housing—a move mandated by Caltech’s head, Robert A. Millikan. Comments on Millikan’s motives, the change in atmosphere on campus, and the makeup of the four new student houses. Recalls his part in fostering new traditions and interhouse athletic competitions; extracurricular activities. Economics courses with Horace Gilbert and Philip Fogg; history with William Bennett Munro. Anecdote about Albert Einstein and Beno Gutenberg; bonfires before annual football game with Occidental; visits to Scripps College. Recollections of working with architect Richard Neutra. Course in structural engineering with Romeo Martel. Concludes with comments on his membership in the Caltech Associates

In this memorandum, the author declares that the report written by Mr. John K. Emmerson entitled, "Japanese in Peru," has been rated "Excellent." The full report can be viewed in item: csudh_moc_0114. The general message from this report is that the Japanese population in Peru may be dangerous and therefore it may be necessary to figure out a way of dealing with that population during the war.Collection of notes, articles, correspondence, photographs, and term papers collected by Yukio Mochizuki, a student at CSU Dominguez Hills, while researching Japanese American incarceration and Japanese Peruvian internment during World War II

1^{1} Howard L. B. Fang, Robert J. Thrash, and George E. Leroi, J, Chem. Phys. 67, 3389 (1977).""Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, Michigan State UniversityThe origin of the lowest-energy 1Ag^{1} A_{g} excited state of diphenyl-hexatriene (DPH) in 3 rigid EPA matrix at 77K77^{\circ}\, K has been located at 25050cm125 050\, cm^{-1} by two-photon excitation (TPE) spectroscopy. It lies 990cm1990\, cm^{-1} below the origin of the lowest one-photon allowed 1Bu1Ag^{1} B_{u} \leftarrow ^{1} A_{g} transition, thus supporting the reordering of polyene excited electronic states suggested by recent theoretical and experimental considerations. As determined also for diphenyloctatetraene,1diphenyl-octatetraene,^{1} one-photon fluorescence originates not from the 1Bu^{1}B_{u} state, but from the lowest excited 1Ag^{1}A_{g} state. The excited state 1Ag1Bu^{1}A_{g} - ^{1}B_{u} origin difference is being systematically studied by extension of these experiments to diphenyldecapentaene. TPE measurements of all-trans retinal in the region 1110013900cm111 100-13 900\, cm^{-1} will also be reported

Howard G. Brown, Myths and Massacres : Reconsidering the Directoire Terror. Using unpublished source material from the French Army Historical Service, the author reviews the judicial repression which followed the coup of 18 Fructidor Year V. The sources reveal the role played by the military commissions, the lot of more than a thousand individuals indicted, the rhythm of repression and also the sociological makeup of the group surveyed. He shows not only how the Directoire aimed at preserving public order together with a certain political stability, but how it clamped down hardest on those it considered its real political adversaries, not just the emigres or refractory priests. LBWiki: A Location-Based Wiki

    No full text
Wiki systems provide a simple interface paradigm that allow non-technical users to author collaborative on-line hypertexts. In this paper we propose to use the same simple paradigm to allow users to create content for ubiquitous information systems, and present LBWiki, a prototype location-based Wiki that allows users with a mobile device to create Wiki pages based on GPS co-ordinates. We describe the hierarchical location scheme used within LBWiki and the results of a small evaluation, in which users reacted positively to the concept, but asked for greater control over geographical regions, and highlighted the importance of accurate location technology

An occupational survey to determine the entry level CAD skills and competencies required by employers of civil engineering technicians in the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College district

    No full text
Includes bibliographical references. The purpose of this study was to identify the CAD related technical skills and competencies that are required for employability at an entry-level position as a civil engineering technician. The majority of employers represented in this study are civil engineering firms, governmental agencies, and surveying firms. Overall, civil engineering firms along with governmental agencies employ the greatest number of drafters. Civil drawings, survey maps, and topographical drawings are the most commonly prepared drawings by the respondents. Other reported drawing types include architectural, electrical/electronic, landscaping, structural, and technical illustrations. Almost all of the respondents use a CAD system for drafting functions. AutoCAD is the primary CAD platform used. MicroStation is also used, but to a much lesser extent. Of the employers that use CAD software, most use at least one collaborative software package with their primary CAD platform. Eagle Point is the most common collaborative software utilized. AutoCAD Land Development Desktop (ALDD) was noted to be the next commonly used collaborative software. Out of the 24 basic CAD skills that were listed on the survey, 14 were considered to be valid curriculum items and will be either retained or added to the program curriculum. Six of the 24 items will be reviewed for being valid curriculum items, and four of the items will not be included in the curriculum. Overall, most basic CAD skills were performed frequently or considered important. Out of the 29 advanced CAD skills that were listed on the survey, none were considered to be valid curriculum items. Sixteen of the 29 items will be reviewed for being valid curriculum items, and 13 of the items will not be included in the curriculum. Overall, most advanced CAD skills were not performed frequently nor considered important. Out of the 15 basic architectural drawing skills that were listed on the survey, none were considered to be valid curriculum items. Eight of the 15 items will be reviewed for being valid curriculum items, and seven of the items will not be included in the curriculum. Overall, most basic architectural drawing skills were not performed frequently nor considered important. None of the six basic structural drawing skills that were listed on the survey were considered to be valid curriculum items. One of the six items will be reviewed for being a valid curriculum item, and five of the items will not be included in the curriculum. Overall, most basic structural drawing skills were not performed frequently nor considered important
