Interactively using Semantic Web knowledge: Creating scalable abstractions with FacetOntology
The amount of knowledge accessible on the Semantic Web is growing, and there is a need for a scalable solution to facilitate exploring that data. Currently approaches to exploring Semantic Web data either focus on exploring resources individually, following links during exploration, and making little use of collated data, or take the approach of collating and aligning multiple sources into one store for one purpose, and hand-crafting a specific browsing interface onto it. We present an approach that provides a scalable browsing interface, which can browse knowledge from the Semantic Web at will. Our approach creates abstractions of knowledge, collated into facets, which are described using FacetOntology. FacetOntology facilitates describing facets from RDF data, suitable for use in creating datasets for faceted browsing
MusicSpace: improving access to musicological data
Efforts over the past decade to digitize scholarly musicological materials has revolutionized the research process, however online research in musicology is now held back by the segregation of data into a plethora of discrete and disparate databases, and the use of legacy or ad hoc metadata specifications that are unsuited to modern demands. Many real-world musicological research questions are rendered effectively intractable because there is insufficient metadata or metadata granularity, and a lack of data source integration. The "musicSpace" project has taken a dual approach to solving this problem: designing back-end services to integrate (and where necessary surface) available (meta)data for exploratory search from musicology's key online data providers; and providing a front-end interface, based on the "mSpace" faceted browser, to support rich exploratory search interaction. We unify our partners' data using a multi-level metadata hierarchy and a common ontology. By using RDF for this, we make use of the many benefits of Semantic Web technologies, such as the facility to create multiple files of RDF at different times and using different tools, assert them into a single graph of a knowledge base, and query all of the asserted files as a whole. In many cases we were able to directly map a record field from a partner's dataset to our combined type hierarchy, but in other cases some light syntactic and/or semantic analysis needed to be performed. This small amount of work in the pre-processing stage adds granularity that significantly enriches the data, allowing for more refined filtering and browsing of records via the search UI. Significantly, although all the data we extract is present in the original records, much of it is neither exposed to nor exploitable by the end-user via our data providers' existing UIs. In musicSpace, however, all data surfaced can be used by the musicologist for the purposes of querying the dataset, and can thus aid the process of knowledge discovery and creation. Our work offers an effective generalizable framework for data integration and exploration that is well suited for Arts and Humanities data. Our benchmarks have been (1) to make tractable previously intractable queries, and thereby (2) to accelerate knowledge discovery
Malthi in Media: Peopling an Ancient Village in Virtual Space
STRIDE Project A Digital Archaeology of Malthi, Greece
Digital applications have increased the possibilities for the visualization of archaeological material. Here are presented two reconstructions of the Bronze Age settlement Malthi, created using Minecraft and Twine, both readily accessible programs. These recreations draw on data from archaeological work at the site and are intended to depict alternative interpretations of the settlement, allowing for the uncertainty inherent in archaeology. They are likewise intended to invite interaction with the site beyond physically visiting, with the goal of increasing participation in the formation of knowledge about Malthi. The approach advocated here is applicable to other projects struggling with ambiguous data.

Letter from Smith Green to grandma and grandpa
Letter from Smith Green to his grandparents, William and Mary Green, giving updates.1 Ft. Mc Dowell, Calif. October 2, 1939 Dear Grandma and Grandpa, I guess this is the last you'll hear of me until I arrive in Manila, P.I. The sailing list went up this morning and I am in the 1st Company. We are due to sail on the 4th which is the day after tomorrow. I went over to see Virginia and Doris and their families Saturday for the last time. They hoped I would miss this boat so I would have to stay here for 2 three more months. They are all fine. Virginia's boy is starting to grow now. Weights about seven lbs. I didn't get to see David because he was at the fair playing in some symphony orchestra. However he called up and said good bye. The pictures we took didn't turn out very good in fact the studio didn't make any prints. I have some pictures of Doris and the baby but they are in the bottom of my locker and it is on the ship by now. I will send some 3 pictures of the fair and of the U.S.A.T. Grant and Alcatraz. I am feeling fine and hope you are the same. Tell everyone hello for me and tell them I will write when I get to Manila. Well, I must close because the P.O. might close and I couldn't get stamps. Oh, yes! I'm sending ??? of what I borrowed. I could have sent it all but I wanted to have plenty for the trip and for 4 Hawaii and Manila. I'll send the rest later. I know you won't mind. Keep you chin up and take good care of yourselves. I got your card when I visted Virginina. It had been there several days. I didn't write before I left over there because I knew I was coming over here. Well, adios, until next time. I'll drop a card from Honolulu and write when I get to Manila and give my address. Lot and Lots of love, Smith S. Green Ft. McDowell Angel Island California WRITTEN 10/2/39 MR. W.M. GREEN Box 426 Broken Bow, Oklahom
EQUIVALENCE TO SMITH FORM FOR MATRICES OVER RINGS.
Necessary and sufficient conditions are established on a ring for any matrix with elements in the ring to be equivalent to its Smith form. It can be shown that the ring of holomorphic functions and the ring of all algebraic integers both satisfy the conditions for equivalence.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
Letter from Smith Green to grandma and grandpa
Letter from Smith Green to his grandparents, William and Mary Green (July 2, 1935).P.S. I'm sending the shoes and shirt after so long. Wasn’t enough room for the pants. I'll send them later. Fort Sam Houston, Tex July 2, 1935 Dear Grandma & Grandpa: I rec'd your card last week. I certainly was glad to hear from you all. I was especially glad to hear that you are well. I know how it is about the rains. It has been that way here all the time I've been here until about a week ago. It stopped then and we've had some pretty weather. It was awfully hot when we went out on hikes in the evenings with a little nine lb. rifel and a pack. We would march steadily for an hour, rest 10 ro 15 minutes and march back. Some fun, eh! It must be pretty good for us though as every body has gained from 10 to 20 lbs. I haven't weighted but I know I've gained at least 10 lbs. My face has filled out so I hardly 2 know myself. I have been turned to duty now, so I drill with the Co. We have 45 minutes close order drill every morning which is marching and executing movements such as squads, right and left, to the rear march, right and left face, right and left dress, etc. etc. Then we have about and hour and a half of specialists training. I've been started out in the communications section. I've already learned how to splice wire and something about field telephones and switchboard operation. Then comes about 45 minutes of stable work. It kinda makes me feel at home, curring and brushing those big donkeys. They sure are big and fat. They are genlte and good workers, too. And next come 15 minutes of marching to music. Then we're off for dinner. After dinner we fall out for fatigue at 1:00. So far though I haven't had any of that. For Monday evening we were paid, this evening there was a ball game (23rd- 2; Brooksfield-0). And tomorrow is Wednesday which is the regular afternoon off, Thursday is the 3 Fourth and Friday is another ball game. The 23rd Infantry has a good ball team. About half the team is in H.Q. Co. Also the 23rd boxing team was champions of the 2nd Division. The Heavyweight and lightweight champions of the 2nd Div. are in H.Q. Co. So you see its a pretty good Co. I went tot he ball game this afternoon and went by a studio and had some pictures made. I don't expect they'll look very good though because I had on my drill clothes and they don't fit as good as dress uniforms. I can't send you one this time because I won't get them until tomorrow night and I'll have to mail this letter tomorrow if it gets there by Saturday. I can't mail it the Fourth, you know. And I know $10 will come in handy by Saturday. I guess you will go to Uncle Charley's the Fourth. I hope they have plenty of goat and ice cream for Grandpa. We have ice cream every Sunday and Holiday and sometimes on Wed. We have meat of some kind 4 P.S. I see by the San Antonio papers that "Alfalfa Bill" Murray has moved within about 3 miles of you. Distinguished neighbors, huh, haha. every day. Sometimes turkey, sometimes chicken, somtimes ham, sometimes beef and fish every Friday. Pretty nice, huh! I wrote a letter to John a while back but haven't got an answer yet. I'm going to write to Aunt Lois and Uncle Charley sometimes soon. I write to Virginia regular and I've writte and have got an answer. They are all well. Paul Anderson is back from Mo. So Nannie and Mac are going to get hooked up? Just as I expected. Well, good luck to them. Say Hello to ol' Ray for me and remind him again to drop me a line. I'm too lazy to write first. Also if you ever see Robert Mc. G. tell him to write. I'm awfully sorry about W. and Mc. G having to plant again. They're having some tough luck, arn't they. Have they ever caught Blondie Taylor? I met a boy the other night that I knew well in old B.B. His name is Jake Eads and he's in the 15th Field Artillery here well I guess I've rattled enough. I'm getting to be like Lurline. Lots of Love Smith S.L. Green Hq. Co. 23rd Inf. Growth Morphologies and Mechanisms of Non-Equilibrium Solidified MC Carbide
Growth morphologies and mechanisms of the carbide of group IVB and VB elements (MC carbide), a typical faceted crystal, were studied with an estimated cooling rate from 102 to 105 K/s. Results showed that although the growth morphologies of the MC carbide vary remarkably with solidification cooling rate, the solid/liquid interface is always atomically smooth, and the growth mechanisms are always lateral growth. The growth mechanism transition from lateral to continuous growth mode, which was predicted by the classic crystal growth theory, was not observed for the TiC type MC carbide within the estimated cooling rate range of 102?105 K/s

The question "What is Web Science" is still frequently asked - even by authors of papers about Web Science. In this position paper we consider what part of the Web Science cycle makes this cycle emblematically "Web Science" rather than another form of either Law and Technology or Sociology and Technology or Computer Science and HCI. Based on our research developing and evaluating Semantic Web / Web 2.0 applications, and observations of current practice, we suggest that the particularity of Web Science is strongly correlated to a focus on human repurposing of particular Web technologies to support ever more rapid types of increased social contact. Based on this analysis, we ask how Web Science may help understand and shape this phenomenon, and what the implications may be for embracing this focus as a necessary criteria for assessing Web Science relevance of research work
