Deafferentation of the hippocampus results in the induction of AT8 positive 'granules' in the rat
Hyperphosphorylated tau is a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease, but the mechanisms that lead to its formation are poorly understood. To investigate what effect deafferentation of the hippocampus has on the phosphorylation state of tau, we lesioned the entorhinal cortex in rats and looked for hyperphosphorylated tau in the hippocampus at various days post lesioning. After 7 and 21 days, small AT8-positive ‘granules’ appeared in the molecular layer of the dentate gyrus on the lesioned side. No such staining was seen in the animals injected with saline. This study shows that deafferentation leads to induction of hyperphosphorylated tau. The AT8 positive ‘granules’ seen resemble the argyrophilic grains that characterize Argyrophilic Grain disease suggesting that lesioning the perforant pathway may serve as a useful model for inducing argyrophilic grains in vivo

Party in the USA (Waste): Evaluating Solid Waste Hauling in Amherst, MA
This project aims to recommend a waste hauling system to the town of Amherst with the goals of improving affordability, sustainability, and transparency. Currently, the majority of Amherst residents contract individually with a USA Hauling and Recycling, a large corporation, for their solid waste hauling services. USA Hauling is expensive and residents are unhappy with the company’s lack of transparency and lack of sustainability incentives, including comprehensive recycling or compost collection services. At the request of local advocacy group Zero Waste Amherst, this project intended to evaluate and recommend an alternative method of waste hauling to the Town of Amherst. The options evaluated included: remaining with the Status Quo; remaining with the Status Quo but campaigning to inform residents of the options available to them within USA Hauling’s service options; remaining with the Status Quo but mandating that residents compost, either in their backyard, by contracting with USA, or by driving it to the transfer station; or entering a Town Contract between the Town of Amherst and a private hauler through a Request for Proposal (RFP) process. Each of these options were evaluated against four criteria, as established by residents’ and advocates’ priorities: affordability, sustainability, transparency, and feasibility of implementation. Analysis and evaluation methods included literature reviews, case studies, interviews with stakeholders, interviews with relevant contacts in other municipalities, cost calculations, and point systems to assess options. The analysis showed that a Town Contract is the best option of the four and will greatly improve waste hauling affordability to residents and to the town, will allow for sustainable practices to be prioritized, and will allow residents easy access to information about their service. For these reasons, this project recommends that the Town of Amherst contract with a hauling company for waste services
Fossil Fuel Divestment in U.S. Higher Education: Endowment Dependence and Temporal Dynamics
Since 2012, students and others have pushed U.S. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to divest their endowments from fossil fuel producing industries. In the past decade, fossil fuel divestment has become the fastest growing divestment movement in history, with over 140 U.S. HEIs announcing divestment commitments. We conduct a quantitative analysis of the three phases of U.S. 4-year HEI divestment announcements (as well as rejections of divestment) to better understand the dynamics. Announcements began (2012-2017) with a number of schools divesting, followed by a second phase where new divestment announcements slowed. The current phase, which began around 2019, shows a renewed increase in divestments. Formal rejections of divestment followed a similar pattern in the early years, where rejections were slightly more common and represented more endowment value, but have declined as some schools reversed public positions. Schools that have divested from fossil fuels now represent roughly 3% of 4-year U.S. HEIs and 35% of endowment value. Roughly 85% more endowment value is now associated with U.S. schools that have divested from fossil fuels than with those that have rejected it. Our analysis points to endowment dependence (the share of operating expenses derived from the endowment) as a potentially important indicator of whether a school would divest, with early divestments from all fossil fuels coming nearly exclusively from schools with a relatively low endowment dependence. We discuss the implications of these findings in the context of different theories of change for the divestment movement. In particular, we note that over 99% of 4-year HEIs representing roughly 95% of endowment value are less dependent upon their endowment than at least one recently divested HEI, suggesting that large endowment or high dependence on endowment are no longer strict barriers to FFD for most schools

Real Estate and HousingArchitecture and The Built Environmen
