Author Tom Springer is interviewed about his writing career and his newest book "Looking for hickories". Springer talks about his career following after earning an Environmental Journalism degree from Michigan State University. He calls his genre "creative non-fiction" and explains how he weaves his memories into his books about life in rural and wild Michigan. Reactive oxygen species responsive dextran-thioketal conjugate nanocarriers for the delivery of hydrophilic payloads
Dextran-thioketal conjugate (DTKC) nanocarrier responsive to endogenous as well as exogenous stimuli is developed for delivering hydrophilic payloads. First, water-soluble reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive DTKCs are synthesized and responsiveness to various ROS stimuli is studied. Next, different DTKC nanocarriers (NCs) loaded with the respective hydrophilic molecules - fluorescent dye (rhodamine B, RhoB), photosensitizer, PS (rose bengal, RB), and chemotherapeutic drug (doxorubicin hydrochloride, Dox) - are synthesized using inverse miniemulsion interfacial polymerization. All NCs exhibit nanocapsule morphology, and cargo dependent hydrodynamic diameters (166-194 nm) in water, an encapsulation efficiency between 79 and 91 %, and a drug loading content of about 11 %. RhoB-NCs and Dox-NCs exhibit time-dependent release upon exposure to different H2O2 concentrations and an enhanced release in conditioned medium collected from oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells. Further, as a proof-of-concept, light-responsive payload release from PS loaded NCs via a cascade reaction is confirmed. The in vitro studies show that RhoB-NCs and RB-NCs are biocompatible while the Dox-NCs exhibit cytotoxic effects. Such dextran-based ROS-responsive NCs sensitive to endogenous (ROS rich environment) as well as exogenous (light in combination with a PS) stimuli are highly interesting to realize combination therapies, for instance combining a chemotherapeutic drug and a photosensitizer for application in photochemotherapy.The authors thank Prof. Karen Smeets (Biodiversity and Toxicology Group, Centre for Environmental Sciences, UHasselt) for providing access to the LSM900 confocal microscope, Birte Luyck for acquiring TEM images, and Dr. Annelies Sels for supporting elemental analysis. Tom is the Vice President of Advanced Programs at Applied Defense Solutions (ADS).
Tom’s entire career has been focused on advanced technology with over 30 years in Space Systems, High Performance Computing, and Microelectronics. With a background in Operations Management, Tom has enjoyed broad success when pioneering companies in rapidly evolving markets and shaping today’s high technology landscape.
Tom is a recognized international expert in Space Situational Awareness (SSA), participating in research, development, and deployment programs since the 1980’s. At Applied Defense Solutions (ADS), Tom has led the transition away from military-only SSA, establishing a broad portfolio of research and development, commercialization, and operational support programs. ADS is a recognized leader in civilian, commercial, and government space exploration, focusing on all phases from mission analysis, operations support, and space protection. Leading the ADS Advanced Programs’ team, Tom coordinates a highly talented group of technical experts working alongside program managers, operational experts, and capture professionals. Their focus is to create and develop opportunities for ADS to apply its innovations and expertise to the most challenging space systems development tasks. His team harnesses a company-wide passion for problem-solving by leveraging a world class research portfolio with exquisite analytical capabilities and deep operational experience. ADS has constructed the most interesting mission portfolio in the industry as Tom and his team love their role in defining the next generation of safe space operations.
Tom is an active participant in NATO Science and Technology panels and activities leading to better understanding of global approaches for effective coalition and collaborative SSA. Tom is a published author on global SSA and is a frequent speaker at domestic and international conferences.

Mergers of Equals & Unequals
We examine the organizational dynamics of integration post merger. Our basic question is whether there is evidence of conflict between employees from the two merging firms. Such conflict can arise for several reasons, including firm-specific human capital, corporate culture, power, or favoritism. We examine this issue using a sample of Danish mergers. The results are consistent with the basic hypothesis. Controlling for other effects, employees from the acquirer fare better than employees from the acquired firm, suggesting that they have greater power in the newly merged hierarchy. As a separate effect, the more that either firm dominates the other in terms of number of employees, the better do its employees fare compared to employees from the other firm. This suggests that majority / minority status is also important to assimilation of workers, much as in ethnic conflicts. Finally, greater overlap of operations decreases turnover. This finding is inconsistent with the view that workers of the two firms may be better substitutes for each other. Science communication: hoe kunnen we het onderzoek van het Centrum voor Milieukunde van de UHasselt naar de klas brengen?
In het kader van deze masterthesis omtrent het overbrengen van wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar het onderwijs werd gekeken naar manieren waarop dit reeds gebeurt. Een gekend voorbeeld hiervan is de Universiteit van Vlaanderen, deze kan echter uitgebreid worden. Daarom is het doel van deze masterthesis het ontwerpen van leeractiviteiten die onderzoek uit de academische wereld naar het secundair onderwijs brengt. Om een beeld te krijgen van de noden van de leerkrachten (tweede en) derde graad van het secundair onderwijs, werden online focusgroepen georganiseerd. Er werd vertrokken van de milieuvraagstukken en hierin werd de link gelegd met de onderzoekslijnen van het Centrum voor Milieukunde (CMK). Hieruit werden twee onderwerpen geselecteerd, namelijk bodemsanering en natuurlijke radioactiviteit, waaraan leerplandoelen gekoppeld kunnen worden. Hierrond werd specifiek lesmateriaal ontwikkeld met het oog op duurzaamheidseducatie en transformatief leren. Dit lesmateriaal werd samengebracht in een website en werd in een tweede focusgroep voorgesteld. De aangereikte feedback werd verwerkt om het lesmateriaal te optimaliseren. Deze werkmethode, gevolgd tijdens de masterthesis, sluit aan bij Design-based research
