    No full text
This research aims to determine the strategies that third-grade teachers of the San Mary School in Panama City, Panama, use to teach English in their classrooms. The research uses a qualitative, descriptive model to analyze the results. The data was collected through a survey that was answered by six of the teachers belonging to the third grade. The methodology used by the teacher in teaching English plays a fundamental role in the success of the students' learning by encouraging their interest and in the achievement of the objectives set. The method chosen is closely related to the approach. Over the years, different specialists have tried to unify and improve the quality of English language teaching. It was in 1963 that the linguist Edward Anthony proposed a hierarchical approach to language teaching (approach, method, and technique). According to this model, technique is the level at which procedures are detailed. A total of eighteen techniques were presented to the teachers through a survey. The most modern techniques in language teaching, which involve the use of technology, were included. The research results showed that third-grade teachers apply various techniques that allow students to read, write, and express themselves in English, which is very positive for learning the language. It is noteworthy that the students reach third grade with a good level of English and show interest in learning, according to the teachers. Similarly, the results of the surveys show the fundamental role that technology has been playing in the development of their classes since all the teachers consulted use it very often. Using resources such as videos, a board, and a computer are also relevant.

This TFG exposes, in a synthesized way, the life and work of the doctor and pedagogue Janusz Korczak. It makes a review of his professional activity, and analyzes several books written by the author. It also reflects part of the pedagogical work he did in the different orphanages he directed. Although he studied and practiced medicine for several years, his concern for boys and girls led him to leave this profession in the background and dedicate himself to this work body and soul. The time in which he lived, marked in the “old doctor” a deep need to know the soul of the infant, and led him to develop an innovative teaching model in his time. The purpose of this work is to publicize part of his work, and expose some thoughts and reflections to give Januz Korczak, a well-deserved recognition as a pedagogue and human being

Abstract The Fourth Level of Theatrical Awareness By Greg Scurria, MFA A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Pedagogy at Virginia Commonwealth University. Virginia Commonwealth University, Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Pedagogy Virginia Commonwealth University, 2010 Major Director: Dr. Noreen C. Barnes, Director of Graduate Studies, Theatre Department This text is a partial record and narrative of the production of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men that opened on May 1st 2009 for a three day run ending May 3rd 2009 and Shel, a collection of Shel Silverstein short plays and poems, which opened on September 18th for a three day run that ended September 20th. It also covers the work done by a small group on Yazmina Reza’s The God of Carnage during the Spring of 2010. The text details the creative process of the two productions while also examining two hypotheses that grew out of that work. It will examine the heightened sense of ownership experienced while working on Of Mice and Men and the subsequent unsuccessful attempt to recreate that atmosphere during Shel. The other hypothesis involves the discovery of the fourth level of theatrical awareness and how it can be used to help actors. The fourth level of theatrical awareness exists outside of the traditional character based exploration of text. Students who examine the text using the fourth level attempt to view the play in its entirety without character bias. Actors using the fourth level look at shape, major themes of the play, and spatial awareness in order to analyze the play using a directorial eye. The possible applications of this work will be discusses as well as concerns about its use. The attempts to apply this fourth level of theatrical awareness in Shel will be discussed, as well as the attempts to find practical applications for the fourth level while working with The God of Carnage. Finally, this paper will outline a plan for implementing the fourth level of theatrical awareness in a production and highlight other areas of exploration involving dramaturgical investigation. As a whole, it will trace the growth and transformation of these ideas and plot a plan to continue expanding on them in the future

Expansins are cell wall proteins associated with several processes, including changes in the cell wall during ripening of fruit, which matches softening of the fruit. We have previously reported an increase in expression of specific expansins transcripts during softening of Fragaria chiloensis fruit. Here, we characterized three α-expansins. Their full-length sequences were obtained, and through qRT-PCR (real-time PCR) analyses, their transcript accumulation during softening of F. chiloensis fruit was confirmed. Interestingly, differential but overlapping expression patterns were observed. With the aim of elucidating their roles, 3D protein models were built using comparative modeling methodology. The models obtained were similar and displayed cellulose binding module(CBM ) with a β-sandwich structure, and a catalytic domain comparable to the catalytic core of protein of the family 45 glycosyl hydrolase. An open groove located at the central part of each expansin was described; however, the shape and size are different. Their protein–ligand interactions were evaluated, showing favorable binding affinity energies with xyloglucan, homogalacturonan, and cellulose, cellulose being the best ligand. However, small differences were observed between the protein–ligand conformations. Molecular mechanics-generalized Born-surface area (MM-GBSA) analyses indicate the major contribution of van der Waals forces and non-polar interactions. The data provide a dynamic view of interaction between expansins and cellulose as putative cell wall ligands at the molecular scale. Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma</p

XTHs from Fragaria vesca: genomic structure and transcriptomic analysis in ripening fruit and other tissues

Abstract Background Fragaria vesca or ‘woodland strawberry’ has emerged as an attractive model for the study of ripening of non-climacteric fruit. It has several advantages, such as its small genome and its diploidy. The recent availability of the complete sequence of its genome opens the possibility for further analysis and its use as a reference species. Fruit softening is a physiological event and involves many biochemical changes that take place at the final stages of fruit development; among them, the remodeling of cell walls by the action of a set of enzymes. Xyloglucan endotransglycosylase/hydrolase (XTH) is a cell wall-associated enzyme, which is encoded by a multigene family. Its action modifies the structure of xyloglucans, a diverse group of polysaccharides that crosslink with cellulose microfibrills, affecting therefore the functional structure of the cell wall. The aim of this work is to identify the XTH-encoding genes present in F. vesca and to determine its transcription level in ripening fruit. Results The search resulted in identification of 26 XTH-encoding genes named as FvXTHs. Genetic structure and phylogenetic analyses were performed allowing the classification of FvXTH genes into three phylogenetic groups: 17 in group I/II, 2 in group IIIA and 4 in group IIIB. Two sequences were included into the ancestral group. Through a comparative analysis, characteristic structural protein domains were found in FvXTH protein sequences. In complement, expression analyses of FvXTHs by qPCR were performed in fruit at different developmental and ripening stages, as well as, in other tissues. The results showed a diverse expression pattern of FvXTHs in several tissues, although most of them are highly expressed in roots. Their expression patterns are not related to their respective phylogenetic groups. In addition, most FvXTHs are expressed in ripe fruit, and interestingly, some of them (FvXTH 18 and 20, belonging to phylogenic group I/II, and FvXTH 25 and 26 to group IIIB) display an increasing expression pattern as the fruit ripens. Conclusion A discrete group of FvXTHs (18, 20, 25 and 26) increases their expression during softening of F. vesca fruit, and could take part in cell wall remodeling required for softening in collaboration with other cell wall degrading enzymes
