We collected inertial sensor data on a smartwatch as users performed activities. The data contains the tap gestures (n=16) as users performed tap gestures against payment terminals and activity data (n=9) as users performed out-of-lab activities (walking, commuting, in-store, or a combination of them). The data is segmented into 6-second gestures, from 4 seconds before the NFC contact point to 2 seconds after, for tap gestures and into 4-second non-gestures with a 2-second overlap for the out-of-lab data

    Predictable and Avoidable: What’s Next?

    No full text
The author of this paper (Dr. Ivo Pezzuto) has been one of the first authors to write back in 2008 about the alleged "subprime mortgage loans fraud" which has triggered the 2008 financial crisis, in combination with multiple other complex, highly interrelated, and concurrent factors. The author has been also one of the first authors to report in that same working paper of 2008 (available on SSRN and titled "Miraculous Financial Engineering or Toxic Finance? The Genesis of the U.S. Subprime Mortgage Loans Crisis and its Consequences on the Global Financial Markets and Real Economy") the high probability of a Eurozone debt crisis, due to a number of unsolved structural macroeconomic problems, the lack of a single crisis resolution scheme, current account imbalances, and in some countries, housing bubbles/high private debt. In the book published in 2013 and titled "Predictable and Avoidable: Repairing Economic Dislocation and Preventing the Recurrence of Crisis", Dr. Ivo Pezzuto has exposed the root causes of the financial crisis in order to enables readers to understand that the crisis we have seen was predictable and should have been avoidable, and that a recurrence can be avoided, if lessons are learned and the right action taken. Almost one year after the publication of the book "Predictable and Avoidable: Repairing Economic Dislocation and Preventing the Recurrence of Crisis", the author has decided to write this working paper to explore what happened in the meantime to the financial markets and to the financial regulation implementation. Most of all, the author with this working paper aims to provide an updated analysis as strategist and scenario analyst on the topics addressed in the book "Predictable and Avoidable" based on a forward-looking perspective and on potential "tail risk" scenarios. The topics reported in this paper relate to financial crises; Government policy; financial regulation; corporate governance; credit risk management; financial risk management; economic policy; Euro Zone debt crisis; the "Great Recession"; business ethics; sociology, finance and financial markets. This working paper aims to contribute to the debate about the change needed in the banking and finance industries and to supervisory frameworks, in order to enhance regulatory mechanisms and to improve global financial stability and sustainability. Conclusion: This paper aims to demonstrate that, in spite of the artificially reduced volatility in the markets, systemic risks have not been reduced after the global financial crisis and that, currently (September 2014), adverse scenarios seem to be much more likely than previously expected by regulators and supervisory authorities, due to the prolonged massive accommodative monetary policies, the increased economic and geo-political risks, and some incomplete or unfit financial regulation. Thus, the stress testing models, their underlying assumptions, and the supervisory authorities' oversight practices should be probably revised to take into account the rising risks of the new emerging scenari

Security of mixed reality systems: authenticating users, devices, and data

Mixed reality devices continuously scan their environment in order to naturally blend the virtual objects with the user’s real-time view of their physical environment. Given the potential of these technologies to profoundly change how individuals interact with their environments, many of the largest technology companies are releasing their mixed reality systems and devoting significant resources towards achieving technological leadership in this field. However, due to the recency of the first commercially available mixed reality devices and their specific interaction channels, existing research has yet to provide practical proposals to achieve many of the core security objectives. Furthermore, given that these devices continuously analyze their environment using multiple front-facing cameras, when designing secure system it becomes necessary to reassess the commonly assumed threat models. In this thesis, we aim to bridge this gap by focusing on secure authentication on mixed reality headsets. Taking into account the stronger assumed adversary models and the interface capabilities of existing mixed reality devices, we propose methods for user and device authentication, as well as show how these devices can be used to secure one’s interactions with legacy systems. Considering that mixed reality headsets are starting to support gaze tracking, in this thesis we propose, build a prototype and experimentally evaluate the use of reflexive eye movements as a biometric modality that is well suited as an authentication method on MR headsets. As an added benefit, the reflexiveness and predictability of one’s eye movement responses makes it possible to incorporate the biometric measurements into challenge-response protocols. This allows the system to prevent replay attacks, one of the most common attack vectors on biometrics. Furthermore, given the many multi-user applications of mixed reality technologies that rely on direct communication between users’ devices, in this thesis we research secure and usable methods to mixed reality headsets. We propose a practical pairing protocol, implement a system prototype using two commercially available mixed reality headsets and evaluate its security and usability. Finally, we show that front-facing cameras of mixed reality headsets can also serve as the means of securing legacy electronic systems. We therefore build and evaluate a prototype of a system that uses a trusted device with video capture and analysis capabilities to authenticate the data that the user inputs when using a potentially compromised local client to communicate with a remote server

Ivo Pilar’s Role in the Organization of Croats in Bosnia and Hercegovina

    No full text
Based on the fact that Dr. Ivo Pilar lived and worked in Bosnia and Herzegovina for fifteen years (1905-1920) of his life, the author cautions that no attempt has been made to describe Pilar’s public activities in that part of the former Austro-Hungarian Monarchy Beginning with an outline of the “Difficulties of Croat Catholics in Bosnia and Hercegovina,” the author gives an overview of the formation of the Croatian People’s Union (1906) and Pilar’s contribution to its work, then the reasons and circumstances of the conflict between this party and the Vrhbosnian Archbishop Josip Stadler, who established the Croat Catholic Association, leading to a split among the Bosnian and Herzegovinian Croats of Catholic faith

Ivo Pilar’s Stance on Racial Doctrine and Eugenics

During the four decades of public activity, Ivo Pilar was defamed, suspected for and accused of many things, but neither contemporaries nor his political opponents ever reproached him for supporting the racial doctrine, advocating the violent and undemocratic principles of struggle or for his affinity for racist concepts. Only after the break-up of Yugoslavia have there been a number of authors who think Pilar was one of the intellectual creators of the undemocratic and racial ideology that supposedly used eugenic methods in order to achieve its objectives. In this paper, the author shows what the critics of Pilar’s work have in common why their views are erroneous and why Pilar’s political and scientific engagement should be contextualized and viewed as a reaction and response to «Serbo-Croatianism« and Yugoslavism the only racial concept in the Croatian lands that had been consistently brought up and seriously enforced until Pilar’s death

Ivo Pilar and Robert William Seton-Watson: two Political Viewpoints on the Southern Slav Question

    No full text
In this article, the author compares the viewpoints of Ivo Pilar and R. W. Seton-Watson, two brilliant publicists, on the South Slav Question as the key problem in southeast Europe in the period up to 1918. He shows how before the First World War both sought a solution to this complex problem, particularly the aspect of Croat-Serb relations, exclusively within the framework of the Habsburg Monarchy. The difference between them lay in the fact that Pilar sought to affirm Croatian statehood, while Seton-Watson to create a new Yugoslav statehood. During the war, Seton-Watson held the view that it was necessary to establish an independent Yugoslav state outside the Monarchy in order to solve the Yugoslav question, but Pilar cemented his standpoint that the Monarchy was the only possible solution for Croatian interests

We collected inertial sensor data on a smartwatch as users performed activities. The data contains the tap gestures (n=31) as users performed tap gestures against payment terminals and activity data (n=9) as users performed out-of-lab activities (walking, commuting, in-store, or a combination of them). Each user folder contains 1 nfctimstamper.csv file, 1+ --watch-sensors.csv file(s), and 0+ --.csv files. These types of files are described as follows: - nfctimstamper.csv This file contains the in-lab timestamps collected for the purpose of segmenting the watch sensor data. The first column is the human-readable timestamp, the second is the UNIX timestamp, and the third contains the data read from the NFC tag that triggered the entry. The NFC tag is either 'userWTC' which was attached to the smartwatch or something containing 'TAP' which shows which terminal is being interacted with -- that is, the 'TAP' tag tells the system which terminal is being used and then each subsequent 'userWTC' is the timestamp of the NFC connection established during a tap gesture as the user interacts with that terminal. The third type of tag is of the form 'ATK--', which timestamps an impersonation attempt made by the user having watched a video clip of performing . - --watch-sensors.csv These files contain the in-lab inertial sensor data collected on the smartwatch. Use the nfctimestamper.csv file to segment this data into tap gestures. - --.csv These files contain the out-of-lab inertial sensor data collected on the smartwatch when the user was performing the . The following users participated in both the first and second runs of the experiment, roughly 18 months apart. These datasets can be used to investigate the time stability component of the tap gesture biometric. In the first run, they had the userIDs in the first column below; in the second, the second. 001 -> 020 008 -> 025 009 -> 027 010 -> 033 014 -> 037 018 -> 02

THE WORK OF IVO VOJNOVIĆ IN VIEW OF CRITICISM OF CROATIAN MODERNITY (Wenzelides' reading of Ivo Vojnović)

    No full text
The author analyzes the critiques, articles and studies on Ivo Vojnović from the first paper published in 1903 to 1917 when he published a study on Ivo Vojnović in a separate book in Sarajevo. Wenzelides' reading of Ivo Vojnović is the result of mature critical approach that can be a guideline in reading modern Croatian literature even today, but it can also become a way for discovering specific features of Croatian literature at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century which can be observed in the works of Ivo Vojnović
