Tradicija v sodobnost
The book ('Tradition in the Contemporary World. Janče: the Green Threshold of Ljubljana') deals with dimensions of tradition in modernity, as reflected in the half-urbanized environment on the northeastern outskirts of Ljubljana - at Janče with its surroundings. The author analyzes the concept of tradition, which is one of the core in ethnology and folklore studies, and presents its concretizations in the ethnographic field, especially its role in local festivals. She mainly focuses on peasant work and its ritual dimensions as well as on other types of heritage/tradition of rural environment. Heritage is not only positively valued by local inhabitants, but also represented in the idealistic form, thus creating rural idyll, attractive for tourists. Having a special value, it has become the means of invoking and preserving identifications with certain communities and the area itself, and is at the same time also used as an argument in general and sustainable development of the area.

Contemporary living conditions have resulted in a global approach to diet and food culture worldwide, which is encouraged and disseminated through various media. The market is filled with a wide range of food-related products, some of which include recipes from “traditional” but unknown sources. This was the inspiration for this article, which is also supported by the findings of fieldwork carried out in Ljubljana in November 2008 and 2009. The research included immigration trends from Serbia to Slovenia from 1918 to the present, and how these are reflected in the acceptance of food-related products and dishes that originated in Serbia and have become part of Slovenians’ everyday diet
The author looks back on the last decade of work and life at the Institute for Slovenian Ethnography at ZRC SAZU. The first part of the article focuses on the links between the institute’s recent work and initial operation, emphasizing how the discipline (ethnography, ethnography) and the institute have positioned themselves in society. The second part lays out a map of project and program contents from 2011 to 2021, highlighting the interplay between the institute’s established academic interests (its disciplinary and institutional identity) and its engagement with current social topics, which is often dictated by calls for varied research projects. These projects have strongly shaped the institute’s survival in the contemporary research market, defined not only by the edict of “publish or perish” but also that of “submit applied research projects”. The author concludes her analysis of the institute’s experience of the turbulent decade with calls for an open, autonomous, and slow science. Izkušnjo turbulentnega desetletja sklepa misel o odprti, avtonomni in počasni znanosti
Reception of Jovan Cvijić in Slovenian ethnology
The paper discusses the reception of the work of Jovan Cvijić in Slovenian
ethnology. Cvijić is considered to be one of the founding fathers of Serbian
ethnology, due in large part to his anthropogeographical orientation that
strongly marked ethnological research in Serbia until the second half of the
20th century. In Slovenian ethnology, the so-called anthropogeographical
school is virtually unknown; however, some of its tenets can be recognized or
were actively applied in research of cultural areas, carried out by
geographers and ethnographers before and after the Second World War when
anthropogeography was considered to be a branch of geography and a discipline
akin to ethnography/ethnology. The author aims to discuss when, for whom and
in what way was Jovan Cvijić direct or indirect reference within the horizon
of Slovenian ethnology. His reception is marked by acknowledging the powerful
influence of his political views and engagement on his scholarship

This article presents a summary of the research achievements of the Institute of Slovenian Ethnology as they are documented in the institute's yearly reports -- achievements that also strongly influenced the course of research in the institute during the last decade. A survey of the developments in research interests of the institute can be interpreted as a continuation of scientific production that is cumulative by nature.
Research developments over time are thus understood as being based on disciplinary and institutional tradition while at the same time -- given existing personal and financial possibilities and the individual habitus of each researcher -- meeting the challenges of paradigm shifts in the discipline as well as in the politics of science

This article presents the background, implementation, and some findings of the research project Etnološki pogledi in podobe med 19. in 21. stoletjem (Ethnological Perspectives and Images between the Nineteenth and Twenty-First Centuries), which are to be understood as a study of the possibilities to design a representative work on culture and cultural processes in Slovenia. From the end of the nineteenth century onwards, the images of culture (or culture in the broadest ethnological meaning), venues of everyday life, needs, communication modes, values, identity patterns, and so on have changed radically; at the same time, this has been a period in which modern ethnology and folklore studies have matured from local studies and philology into a scholarly discipline. Restriction to this period has marked the design of the project, which has been guided by the ambition to know more about the intersections and crossroads between empirically perceivable elements and scholarly interventions in them, to comprehend the “views” of the reality studied, and to reveal “images” connected with it
