The impact potential of liberative black preaching on the "Beingness" of African descent persons in the Black church context: the therapeutic dimensions of black preaching, 2009
Get PDFThis dissertation presents liberative Black preaching (LBP) as an optimal homiletic model designed to function as a therapeutic intervention for African descent persons in the Black church context. Built upon the foundation of a Black theological anthropology, this dissertation addresses Black self-identity that is informed by a universal African worldview (UAW). The dissertation argues that there is a recognizable diversity of contextuality among White and non-White persons and that it is possible to qualitatively describe generalizable contours of experience among Black people in the United States based on the particularity of the culture and the Black encounter with racism/White supremacy. The thoughts and feelings that emerge from this cultural encounter are appropriate for Africentric theological reflection. Historical evidence of the unfolding of Black thought with reference to Black religiosity and spirituality is presented as a preamble to the construction of the liberative Black preaching model. The dissertation employs a mixed research method. A qualitative methodological paradigm is primarily employed, while quantitative tools are used in the data gathering process of the study. Variables were established as constitutive elements necessary for the construction of sermons that have therapeutic value for African descent persons through collection of data during applied research experiences in six different Black church settings over a two month period. Analysis of the data indicates a generally positive impact on the cognitive and affective processes of the hearers of LBP. The operating thesis of the dissertation asserts that liberative Black preaching~s concentration on counterbalancing the affects of White supremacy upon African descent persons can alleviate Black pain, ameliorate Black suffering and function therapeutically similarly to the way in which conventional pastoral counseling functions. The operating assumption reveals the significance of therapeutic intentionality with respect to sermon construction by Black preachers given the relative importance of the preaching moment in the Black church context. The opportunity for regular, systematic intervention in the form of LBP provided by the voluntary participation in weekly communal worship experiences proves critical in the process of attaining optimal health which is the best possible [state of] emotional, intellectual, physical, spiritual, and socio economic aliveness for African descent persons

No full textThis project explores the relational problems experienced in African-American women reared in the system of “kinship care” as children. This project outlines the history of the Black family, attachment related issues, familial struggles, and future goals for the kinship care system. The origins of “kinship care” in the African-American community date back to the enslavement of Black people on the continent of North America. To preserve the Black family, relatives and family-friends willingly stepped into the role of parenting abandoned children. Minimal conversation or resources are available in print that speaks to the surrounding psychological problems developed by children reared in kinship care situations. Minimal data was found outlining how children especially girls raised in kinship care function in society after they leave home. There was no research discovered during this project on the productivity of children reared in kinship care as compared to children raised by their biological parents. This project seeks to fill in some of the missing information. The Black family has a strong foundation rooted in the tradition of preservation which helps in support of children in kinship care. Qualitative analytical research, interviews, and lived experience of the researcher have informed this research project. This project aims to shed light on the phenomenon known as “kinship care,” present what the literature offers about this topic, and to offer women a written resource to help them navigate the “kinship care” system

No full textArt therapy is a proven tool to assist those in crisis. Art therapy can be used to bring out the pain and fears of a person in a healthy manner causing them the least setbacks in their recovery. As Black churches begin to address the needs of their congregation, the hope is that the relational needs of the people will be supported. The pastor can’t do it all; the servant leader must entrust the “priesthood of all believers” to come together and do their part while attending to one another. About this project, a servant leader is one who stands side by side with the congregation in the process of doing ministry. As a servant leader, I come to serve others. I believe because of the right teaching in art therapy, the youth that attended Grant Chapel AME church learned a skill that served them in various situations. The intention of this project (overall) was directed to building collegiality and harmony in the day to day conversation. It is my theory that if the energy of young adults could be channeled into the performing or visual arts, then they would have an outlet to redirect their frustrations, thus developing them into leaders within the vichurch and society. Qualitative analytical research and a focus group discussion informed the results of this research project. The goal of this project is to organize caring youth and adults within the church who have a desire, to open the lines of intergenerational communication. Because of their engagement, both groups were intentional about the use of tone with which they responded to their peers. Both youth and elders exhibited humility and a less argumentative tone as they engaged in conversation. As the project proceeded, both adults and elders requested additional opportunities of enrichment. Art therapy is a proven tool to assist those in crisis. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
