The Mesoproterozoic (1600–1000 Ma) is an Era of Earth history that has been defined in the literature as being quiescent in terms of both tectonics and the evolution of the biosphere and atmosphere (Holland, 2006, Piper, 2013b and Young, 2013). The ‘boring billion’ is an informal term that is given to a time period overlapping the Mesoproterozoic period, extending from 1.85 to 0.85 Ga (Holland, 2006). Orogenesis was not absent from this period however, with various continents featuring active accretionary orogenesis along their margins for the entire Mesoproterozoic (see Condie, 2013 and Roberts, 2013), and others featuring major continental collisional orogenesis that relates to the formation of the supercontinent Rodinia towards the end of the Mesoproterozoic. Looking at it another way, this period followed the formation of perhaps the first long-lived supercontinent, Columbia (a.k.a. Nuna), and then it prepared the ground for the momentous geological and biological events in the Neoproterozoic that paved the way for the Cambrian explosion of life. As such it is a very important period of Earth history to understand better. Do orogens formed in the Mesoproterozoic differ from those formed in the recent past, or those formed in early Earth history, and if so in what way? Do orogens in the Mesoproterozoic have distinct structural, metamorphic or magmatic characteristics? How are Mesoproterozoic orogens related geodynamically and kinematically? These are overarching questions that this collection of sixteen research papers aims to address. This introduction presents a brief discussion of the contribution of these papers to these questions and topics

The study area is located on the north-western coast of Norway in the exposed basement window known as the Western Gneiss Region, (WGR). The WGR is an approximately 50 000 km2 region of Proterozoic gneisses, known as one of the world’s largest exposed ultra-high pressure (UHP) terrains. The area comprises mainly granodiorites- tonalites dated at 1.7 Ga to 1.6 Ga, as well as some mafic intrusions dated at 1.4 and 1.2 Ga. Later, the Sveconorwegian orogeny at ca. 1.0 Ga to 0.9 Ga resulted in a granulite facies overprint accompanied by dike and pluton emplacement and migmatisation which affected the southern part of the WGR. UHP metamorphism during the Caledonian orogeny affected the WGR from ca. 420 Ma to 385 Ma, resulting from subduction of the Baltic margin below Laurentia, and the juxtaposition of several nappes on to the Baltic margin. In the final stages of the orogen, the UHP terrain underwent rapid exhumation. Later extensional deformation has resulted in folding and thrust imbrication affecting most of the overall structural features. Through detailed geological mapping and sample collection in a field area of 10 x 10 km located in Nordmøre, together with additional samples collected throughout the WGR, this study aims at getting a better understanding of the magmatic, metamorphic and deformational processes that have affected this area from its formation in Paleoproterozoic to the Devonian. The focus has been on dating the migmatisation of the Proterozoic basement gneisses in this region. U-Pb zircon ages were obtained from 27 samples, whereof 18 were leucosomes, using the LA-ICP-MS lab at NGU, Trondheim. Whole rock geochemical analysis was performed at the ALS Chemex laboratories in Sweden. The geochemical and geochronological data suggest that the protoliths to the migmatites formed in a magmatic arc system between 1691 ± 22 and 1589 ± 19 Ma. The leucosome zircons have a distinct core and mantle morphology, which is interpreted to reflect the inheritance from the protoliths (core) and subsequent migmatisation (mantle). This interpretation is supported by the obtained U/Pb geochronological data from the zircons. The zircons record both Sveconorwegian, ~ 1.0 Ga, and Caledonian, ~ 400 Ma, migmatisation. Sveconorwegian migmatisation of the basement gneisses is confirmed for the southern WGR, but has yet to be identified in the northern WGR. Based on the geochemistry and the obtained protolith and Sveconorwegian metamorphic ages, a correlation between the exposed basement in the WGR and the Sveconorwegian Eastern Segment in Sweden is proposed. The Caledonian ages in the leucosomes indicate that migmatisation took place during the 423 ± 10 to 392 ± 3 Ma time interval. These dates combined with structural top-to-east thrusting observations made in some leucosomes indicate that the migmatisation was mostly active during prograde subduction of the Baltic margin below Laurentia. Based on available pressure-temperature estimates from the WGR, partial melting was most likely hydrous fluid-present, and the lack of significant melting during exhumation may have been prevented by prograde partial dehydration. Partial melting would have altered the rheology of the subducted continental crust, and may have facilitated rapid exhumation. These interpretations are in line with previously published work. Suggestions are made for further research, that would give increased insight into the evolution of the rocks and the region

A part of the Kjerringfjell Group in the Rӧdingsfjället Nappe Complex in the Uppermost Allochthon of north-central Norway was mapped during this thesis. The rocks in this area mainly compose of garnet-biotite gneiss, garnet-mica schist, two-mica gneiss, garnet-two mica gneiss, quartzite, pegmatite, and garnet amphibolite, and the host rock of garnet-biotite gneiss are intruded by the Umbukta gabbro and mafic dykes. The contact-zone between the gabbro and the garnet-biotite gneiss consists of contact-zone granitoid, mafic- dyke and enclaves, and granitic veins, which show evidence of mingling processes. At Umbukta and Østre Sauvatnet, mafic dykes cut the gabbro, the garnet-biotite gneiss and the quartzite. Major- and trace element geochemical analyses were made for the Umbukta gabbro and the mafic dykes. The gabbro (represents a cumulate composition) and the mafic dykes show a tholeiitic geochemical signature. The trace element geochemistry of the rocks shows an enriched REE pattern relative to chondrite. The trace elements in the MORB normalized spider diagram mainly show an enriched pattern of the trace elements, except for Y and Yb, and the primitive mantle normalized spider diagram shows a relative enriched geochemical pattern relative to the primitive mantle, with no negative anomalies for Nb, Ta or Ti. The trace element geochemical patterns of the chondrite-, MORB-, and primitive mantle normalized spider diagrams indicate an intracontinental environment. The tectonic discrimination diagrams point to an intracontinental rift or a back-arc setting. Geochronological analyses were conducted on the Umbukta gabbro and the host rock for age determination, with the use of the LA-ICP-MS method. The Umbukta gabbro yields a U-Pb zircon age of 565±20 Ma, and the U-Pb detrital zircon age population of the host rock mainly shows depositional ages between 1000 and 1900 Ma. The youngest age of the analysed detrital zircons was 1000 Ma, and point to depositional age younger than 1000 Ma. The U-Pb zircon age and the geochemical signature of the Umbukta gabbro and the mafic dykes show many similarities with the gabbros in the Seiland Igneous Province (SIP), in Finnmark of northern Norway. The SIP is placed in the Kalak Nappe Complex (KNC) within the Middle Allochthon. The Umbukta gabbro could stem from the same source as the gabbros in the Seiland Igneous Province (SIP). This possible correlation should lead to a reconsideration of the interpretation of the tectonostratigraphy of the Scandinavian Caledonides. The KNC and SIP is traditionally interpreted to belong to the Middle Allochthon, and the Umbukta gabbro and mafic dykes in the Kjerringfjell Group is placed within the Uppermost Allochthon. The results of this study suggest a possible correlation of the rocks in the KNC and SIP with the rocks in the Kjerringfjell Group in the Uppermost Allochthon

Radiogenic isotopes are key to understanding the geological processes that have shaped the Earth. Lu-Hf isotopes can give insights into the sources and evolution of rocks, and U-Pb isotopes provide the necessary temporal constraints. This project is concerned with the geology of Sør-Varanger, located in the far north of Norway. The units in the region are part of the Archean Kola province of the Precambrian Fennoscandian Shield. Numerous workers have studied the area previously, but due to the complex and ancient history, several challenges persist. This project provides new U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotope data and, on the basis of these data, field observations, and previous literature, attempts to further unravel the processes that took place in the Archean. Fieldwork was carried out over a 10-day period during the summer of 2023. This included mapping and sampling of the various units in the study area. Samples were collected to separate zircon for U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotope analyses. Mineral separation and in-situ MC-LA-ICP-MS analysis was conducted at the Norwegian Geological Survey in Trondheim. The oldest recognizable units are TTG gneisses yielding Mesoarchean and Neoarchean ages between 2.86–2.80 Ga. Average initial εHf values range from +1.7 to -2.9. A sample of granitic gneiss from the adjacent Inari Terrane yielded an age of 2.73 Ga with an initial εHf value of +0.1. The gneisses likely provided material for the metasediments of the Kola/Jarfjord series, the dominant unit of the Sørvaranger-Kola Terrane. This is substantiated by 207Pb/206Pb ages and initial εHf values of detrital zircon that are distinctly similar to the older orthogneisses. A period of deformation after 2.8 Ga is indicated by 207Pb/206Pb ages of metamorphic zircon. A 2.77 Ga age from a sample of orthogneiss is taken to represent resetting of U-Pb ages. Granodioritic and monzonitic- to syenitic plutons were emplaced in the Jarfjord Gneiss around 2.76-2.72 Ga. The plutons have been interpreted as syn- and post-tectonic, indicating that granulite facies deformation had largely subsided or was in the final stages at 2.76–2.72 Ga. Monzonitic rocks have average initial εHf values between +0.5 and -0.7. Around 2.72-2.65 Ga, large parts of the crust were intruded by granitic melts. At least two generations of pegmatite are recognised, the oldest of which were deformed with their host gneisses. Younger generations cut the foliation of the gneisses and were likely emplaced after deformation. Average initial εHf values of pegmatites range from -1.0 to -1.6. The final Archean crust-forming event occurred at the transition to the Proterozoic. The existing bedrock was intruded by large granitic plutons in western Sør-Varanger and adjacent Finland. Two samples from the Neiden Granite yield ages of ca. 2.49 Ga with average initial εHf values of -3.7 and -4.1. The hafnium data suggest that the granite forming melts were derived from remelting of older 2.86–2.7 Ga crust. Lower intercepts of Palaeozoic age suggest that the Archean crust was affected by emplacement of the Caledonian Nappes

Deformation, Phyllonitization and Associated Element Mobilization of Granitoid Rocks: - A geochemical study of the Fagervika granitoid, Norway.

The Fagervika granitoid is a felsic, peraluminous intrusion that was emplaced in oceanic crust at 481 Ma, now represented as the Bymarka ophiolite in Trondheim, Norway. It belongs to the Støren Group in the Upper Allochthon within the Scandinavian Caledonides. The emplacement onto the Baltican margin during the Caledonian orogeny occurred around 420 Ma, with following collapse in 400 - 380 Ma. Regionally, the rocks have been subjected to greenschist to lower amphibolite facies metamorphic conditions. Detailed mapping at centimetre to decimetre scale of the Gråkallen area reveals the complex distribution of phyllonitic shear zones hosted by a granodiorite, with transport direction interpreted as a top-to-the-west movement. Field observations and petrographic studies were performed for mineral identification and textural descriptions. Comparison of the modal mineralogy with whole-rock data including trace elements is used to show chemical variation between the different lithologies. Mineral chemistry was examined with element mapping by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electron Microprobe Analysis (EMPA) and Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). These methods report the major and trace element distribution along with the Rare Earth Elements (REE) distribution in each mineral phase. Isocon analysis of paired granodiorite-phyllonite samples enabled for quantification of the gains and losses in the system. The rocks at Gråkallen are granodioritic, with only minor variations in modal mineralogy across all samples. The granodiorite is hypidiomorphic, show no preferred mineral orientation with early growth of mica and dynamic recrystallization of quartz. Phyllonitic shear zones have developed locally in the granodiorite and signs of widespread fluid interaction and metasomatism is evident throughout the rocks. The granodioritic assemblage is represented by Qtz + Pl + Kfs + Ms ± Py, with secondary accessories Ep + Aln + Ttn, which has been identified as the main REE-carriers. Allanite is enriched in the LREE, while epidote contains LREE to a lesser degree and titanite holds the HREEs, reflecting each minerals preferential affinity for the REEs. The feldspars are altered, with alkali feldspar neocrystallized to albite, and plagioclase is seritized and saussuritized, with widespread muscovite and epidote. Major elements Na and K have been mobilized and Ca to a lesser degree, while the REEs has only been mobilized at micro scale in the granodiorite. iii The phyllonitic shear zones trend approximately N-S and consist of elongated quartz grains in a muscovite matrix, defining the assemblage of Qtz + Ms ± Py ± feldspar porphyroclasts. The formation of the muscovite indicates the presence of water-rich fluid. The Ca-bearing accessories Ep + Aln + Ttn has been destabilized, along with most of the feldspar due to deformation and high fluid/rock ratio, though some titanite is remnant. In addition, the fluid composition enabled for mobilization of trace elements and REEs. This resulted in depletion of the REE, with a greater loss of LREE compared to HREE. An epidote-rich shear zone shows a high modality of epidote, along with Ms + Py + Qtz + Ttn, with subsequent REE enrichment in comparison to the granodiorite. The REE pattern of the epidote-rich shear zone appeared as an enriched version of the granodiorite REE pattern, suggesting that stabilization of epidote and titanite prevented loss of the REEs. This study shows that metasomatism triggered mineralogical changes and grain size reduction, especially for the feldspars in the undeformed granodiorite, enabling increased fluid flow. The heightened fluid/rock ratio allows muscovite to form, and thus promoting strain weakening and further strain partitioning. Deformation and fluid-rock interaction completely changed the mineralogy by destabilizing feldspar and the REE-bearing phases and by forming muscovite, which promoted mobilization of K, Na, Ca and the REEs during phyllonitization of the granodiorite

Palaeoproterozoic Tectonomagmatic Evolution and Crustal Architecture of the SW Margin of Fennoscandia
