Cardiovascular responses and adaptations to breath-holding in humans
In questo caso ci attendevamo di vedere al termine della fase II dei valori simili a livello cardiovascolare trovate a esercizio ed a riposo e con simili caratteristiche anche in fase III.The aim of this thesis was to test the general hypothesis, that the end of phase II, i.e. the breaking of the steady state for cardiovascular variables, may coincide with the physiological breaking point of apnoea (Lin et al, 1974). This hypothesis was investigated by means of two, interrelated studies. Each of these studies analysed an experimental consequence of the general hypothesis, the one opposite with respect to the other.
The first experimental consequence to be tested was that the duration of phase II and phase III would be shorter when apnoeas are carried out during light exercise than at rest because of the increase in metabolic rate in the former case. Of course, we expected to find the same values for cardiovascular variables at end of phase II at exercise as at rest, with similar characteristics during phase III. The testing of this hypothesis is the object of the first article, which is currently under revision at the European Journal of Applied Physiology.
The second experimental consequence to be tested was that the duration of phase II and phase III would be longer when apnoeas are carried out when pure oxygen is breathed before apnoea instead of air, because of the increase in oxygen stores in the former case. Of course, we expected to find the same values for cardiovascular variables at end of phase II at exercise as at rest, with similar characteristics during phase III. The testing of this hypothesis is the object of the second article, which is currently under preparation
Corrosion behaviour of titanium in non-aqueous solvents
Titanium undergoes severe localised corrosion in non-aqueous media in the presence of applied stress and crevices. A study was carried out on the behaviour of Ti in (non-alcoholic) non-aqueous media by testing the electrochemical properties and stress corrosion cracking susceptibility of titanium in such solvents as ethyl ether, acetic acid and acetic anhydride. The possibility of predicting the conditions of occurrence of stress corrosion cracking of titanium by means of polarization curves has been confirmed by simply scrutinizing when the corrosion potential is more positive than breakdown potential. A mechanism for the corrosion of titanium in organic solvents has been put forward. [All rights reserved Elsevier]
This research aims at providing a first and thorough description of Gianna Manzini’s work for the Italian Broadcasting (RAI), a collaboration which started in 1947 and ended in 1968. Her works for the radio are divided into fashion and literary criticism broadcasting (chapter 1) and original radio screenplays (chapter 2); her works for the television are divided into broadcasted and non broadcasted scripts (chapter 3). The texts of these programmes have been found in the following archives: Fondazione Arnoldo e Alberto Mondadori (Milan), Archivio del Novecento, Università La Sapienza (Rome) and Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale (Rome). The thesis both describes and analyzes original and unpublished works and screenplays, such as L’Almanacco dei sogni, Il paesaggio come fatto personale, Il grande indiscreto, Il nome di battesimo and Alfredino.
In the end, the research showed evidence that Gianna Manzini was well aware that different media require different writing characteristics and was able to act accordingly. Nonetheless, her literary and broadcasting activity cannot be considered as two separate carriers, being actually strictly bound to each other
Effects of step duration in incremental ramp protocols on peak power and maximal oxygen consumption
Electrochemical and stress corrosion cracking behaviour of titanium in n-propanol and iso-propanol solutions
Titanium shows severe localised corrosion in non-aqueous media in the presence of applied stress and crevice. The present work brings a contribution to the behaviour of Ti in non-aqueous media by studying the role of water on the electrochemical properties and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) sensitivity of Ti in n-propanol and iso-propanol solutions. The anodic behaviour of titanium in n-propanol–H2O and iso-propanol–H2O systems is quite similar to that observed in methanol–H2O and ethanol–H2O systems.
The minimum water content needed for the passive film to be stable is 2% for n-propanol and 0.1% for iso-propanol. In methanol and ethanol it is 20 and 8%, respectively. The minimum water content decreases as the number of carbon atoms increases and the lowest water content in iso-propanol is strictly related to the capability of the alcohol to dehydrate. The possibility of predicting by means of polarisation curves the conditions of occurrence of SCC of titanium has been confirmed by simply analysing when corrosion potential is higher than breakdown potential
Corrosion behaviour of Duplex stainless steel in organic acid aqueous solutions
This paper reports on mass loss and electrochemical polarization behaviour of two duplex stainless steels, SAF2205 and SAF2507, in aqueous
solutions of acetic acid, formic acid and their mixtures, in the presence of specific contaminant, e.g. sulphuric acid. The effect of temperature and
redox couples was also investigated.
Both steels withstand corrosion in acetic acid solutions in a wide temperature and concentration range. The corrosion rate is higher in the more
dissociated formic acid at the same concentration. Uniform corrosion with selective dissolution of the austenitic phase was observed in all tested
solutions, being more pronounced with increasing solution aggressiveness.
The presence of sulphuric acid is severely detrimental to the corrosion resistance. The corrosion rate increases almost linearly with H2SO4
concentration. The addition of few tens of ppm of oxidant species such as hydrogen peroxide and Fe3+ or Cu2+ improves the corrosion performance
markedly, leading to corrosion rates close to zero. In particular, the addition of H2O2 increases the corrosion potential up to the passivity of the
steels owing to the possible formation of peracids
WSN-Erlang: a Functional, High Level Approach to WSN Development
The complexity in designing, coding, and testing WSN applications is considered among the most relevant factors that limit the diffusion of WSN technology. In this work we claim that Erlang, a concurrency and distribution-oriented, functional language, could greatly reduce this complexity. Moving from this premise we introduce a new platform, named WSN-Erlang, which leverages the Erlang peculiarities adapting them to the requirements of WSNs. WSN-Erlang also includes a testing and simulation framework, fully supporting the entire life-cycle of WSN applications
